Maybe your suffering from tunnel vision.

You've already got a good reply. The Department of War became the Department of the Army. The "Department of Defense" inhereited the staus/seniority of the "old" Department of War.

"I saw no expansion, per se. Instead Bush's reorg is likely to reduce government growth, since all of the homeland security stuff will be one agency, as opposed to every cabinet department having its own homeland security division."
Are you living on the same planet that I am? You cannot actually believe this?
To: UnBlinkingEye
What is the purpose of the Department of Defense? To wage war.

"We call it cleaning house"
If this is house cleaning then you need maid service.

Not necessarily true..while some new people were hired, I think advocates for a smaller government have some reason to smile..although not completely
What Bush is going to do is take all the security agencies from the transportation, treasury, etc and merge them into one so they can focus.
As with anything along this scale, congress can easily pervert so I am sure they will want x number of new employees. What Bush should do is try and weed out the unnecessary departments such as the education department which serves no purpose.

Shucks this isn't anything more than a made up title to some article that he/she never posted from CNN. CNN has nothing on their web site near this title that was used but I suspect the following maybe the article..... UBE... did you just make up the title to suit your needs?

I am watching President Bush giving a speech on CNN telling us he is expanding federal government more than any Democrat since Truman. I think he did a great job of laying out a reorganization of funtions that already exist, didn't he.
What was new? Where was the expansion?

"Well, God fell down on the job on 9/11, didn't he?"

there are two types of government: there is big government and then there is Big Government
big government-when the government spends more money (like in a war) but does not seize more power
Big Government-is when they seize more power away from the people (as in federalizing airport security
However, other than the airport security, and the patriot act (which has its goods and bads), it has been relatively the former

Wanna be better protected, or not? He's pulling together a lot of different agencies and parts of other agencies. He did not speak of an expansion. He only spoke of reorganizing what was already in place.
Some will go through hoops to lie about our president and spread propaganda.
