A white police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina has been charged with murder after video emerged of him shooting an unarmed black man in the back while he was trying to run away, reports the Charleston Post and Courier. The two had been involved in a scuffle.
The man, 50-year-old Walter Scott, died Saturday after Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, shot at him eight times, though it is not immediately clear how many shots hit him. Scott had been stopped for a broken tail light, and he ran from police “because he owed child support,” said his family, according to New York Times reporter Matt Apuzzo.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Keith Summey said that the officer’s “bad decision” had led to his arrest on the charge of murder.

Shooting an unarmed man in the back eight times is not self defense. I hope this cop/thug gets executed. He needs to me made an example of.

It’s horrible, but places like Hanahan, etc. have improved. There’s actually a lot less crime overall. I think a lot of the baddies have killed each other and they’re out of the gene pool.
That said, there doesn’t seem to be any justification for this. How could a tubby little black guy (running away) who almost looks like a caricature be a threat to a fit, armed cop?
The guy had been arrested 10 times, mostly for being behind on his child support, but wasn’t violent. The cop will have to convince a jury that he believed a non-violent fugitive was a danger to him or others. And the “broken tail light sounds like the cop was looking for an excuse to pull him over.
live in Mount Pleasatnt and every night I watch news there is at least 2 or 3 shootings in North Charleston. I have a feeling this police officer just cracked.
Before the video was released, Officer Slager’s attorney claimed that he felt threatened by Scott when he let off the shots.
Feelings. What a pussy. Any sense of threat must be REASONABLE. Self justifying ‘feeeeelings’. Doesn’t get any femmier than that.

This one looks like cold blooded murder. Scary.
Looks bad for the cop, but he won’t get a fair trial anywhere in the USA. The Boston Marathon bomber can get a fair trial but this cop won’t.
You say “fair trial” as if there might be some justification for what he did. There is NOT.
I have given cops the benefit of the doubt and trusted that justice would out in the end. Now, I am wondering if, absent the video, he may have gotten away with it. It's an unsettling feeling.
