Gunmen armed with “sophisticated weapons” raided a Nigerian boarding school Monday, killing at least one staffer and abducting 25 schoolgirls after a firefight with guards.
Police said the attackers stormed Maga boarding school around 4 a.m., trading fire with guards before fleeing with the students. Authorities have launched a coordinated search operation, scanning suspected escape routes and surrounding forests to recover the girls and apprehend the perpetrators, a police spokesperson told ABC News.
A relative of one of the girls told ABC they fear two people may have been killed in the attack.
“We were told that the attackers entered the school with many motorcycles. They first went straight to the teacher’s house and killed him before killing the guard,” the family member said.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris said Monday the government is “firmly committed to bringing the girls home safely,” according to Sahara Reporters.
The statement said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu views the protection of Nigerians, especially schoolchildren, as a core duty of the state and condemned the killings and abductions. It added that security agencies have been ordered to find and recover the girls and bring the attackers to justice.
The gunmen’s motives remain unclear, and no group has yet claimed responsibility, though similar kidnappings have been carried out for ransom in the region, ABC News reported.
The bandits behind earlier abductions are not linked to Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province, whose attacks on Christian communities led President Donald Trump to designate Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern.”
The designation allows the U.S. to consider targeted measures, including potential sanctions, in response to severe violations of religious freedom and to increase pressure on Nigerian authorities over extremist violence, including but not limited to attacks by Boko Haram.
