A new musical blending contemporary hip-hop music and Catholic liturgy debuted Feb. 14-16 at the Lyke House, a Catholic Newman Center serving historically Black colleges in Atlanta.
The “Hip-Hop Mass” from composer Kevin Johnson consists of 24 songs in the order of a Mass. The production includes choreography, liturgical dance and even a depiction of the Eucharistic Prayer.
“The beauty of the ‘Hip-Hop Mass’ is bringing young people back to the church,” Johnson said.
The ensemble cast in the performances this month in Georgia consisted of choreographers, actors and students affiliated with the Lyke House. Johnson emphasized that there was no way to create the project without including young adults.
“[It] was an opportunity to engage young people, which stems from the missionary discipleship program at the Lyke House, where we could actually work with collegiates,” he said.
Before the premiere, the cast performed some of the music at Morehouse College on Feb. 13 at an induction Mass for a portrait honoring the late Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver for their human and civil rights contributions.
The liturgy was celebrated by Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Washington, an African American cardinal who formerly led the Atlanta Archdiocese for nearly 15 years from 2005 to 2019.
Ping
Instead of concluding with “Ite missa est,” he could just say, “Well, that’s a rap.”
“Instead of concluding with “Ite missa est,” he could just say, “Well, that’s a rap”
Or maybe “Peace out.”
For God’s sake, NO!
This is bad
DISGUSTING!!! The MASS is BEAUTIFUL!!! This is an ABOMINATION!! Gregory is just BLACK....period.
Lol.
WELL put.
Well, rats. I thought we were rid of him.
I hear that Cardinal Gregory is going to celebrate the hip-hop Mass, accompanied by the cast of Hamilton, right in Pope Francis’ hospital room. When confronted with the possibility that Morehouse, as a Historically Black College, might be misconstrued as being a segregationist institution, the Cardinal allegedly said it was the very white St. Vitus who taught us that one could never have enough Liturgical Dancing. Dear Jesus, have Mercy on us!
Where are the Priests who truly represent Jesus Christ!
Go to that church, and all the other apostate churches with a horse whip and start ripping flesh and running them out!!
Enough already!!
It looks like his expanded leisure time has given him more opportunity to make trouble. Unfortunately.
Diabolically disoriented.
If you want to bring young people to the church, you do it through music.
I know of no young Catholics who are attracted to hip-hop, rap, folk or polka music at their Masses.
You would think, but actually the young folks flocking to the Mass want the Mass of the Ages.
And our traditional music - chant, polyphony, Renaissance, Baroque - is the best. Our parish has excellent music that goes back to the earliest days of the Church.
I am so jealous....
