Our daughter is in kindergarten at a private Catholic school. The school is wonderful—small classes, caring teachers...
We are not Catholic and lean more towards atheism, especially me. We knew that religious teaching would be part of her school, and we were okay with that. The public-school system where we live is pretty good, but our daughter has a lot of anxiety and is someone who needs smaller classes and lots of individual attention.
. We are comfortable teaching her about other religions (Diwali celebrations, Menorah lightings). She is very into exploring and learning about the world, so she is actually excited about those things. However, I majorly underestimated how much she would LOVE the Catholic teachings.
The stories they are learning and how they are taught are very appealing to a young child, and I know that, even when she gets older, my daughter might just be someone who is attracted to religion and spirituality in a way that I never was. I also get that the “we are made of stardust” is not exactly warmest and fuzziest thought. Lately, however, she has been asking really pointed questions about what I believe, and I’m not quite sure how to answer them. For example, the other day, she asked if I believed in Jesus, I tried asking her what she believed, but she just asked me again: “I want to know what you believe.” The short answer is no, I don’t believe in those things. But any version of my not believing makes her upset, and pointing out other faith traditions basically gets her to say, “Yeah, those are interesting, but Jesus is real.” For context, she asked me if I believed in Santa the other day, and I had no problem telling her, “Yep, sure do!”

Somehow the religion piece feels different, and I’m worried that if I’m evasive, she will feel misled when she is a little older. But if I’m honest or even ambiguous, she gets very concerned. She worries about the people she loves dying, and it’s hard for me to think of a way to answer that won’t make that worse. Is there a script? I’m lost!
“Yeah, those are interesting, but Jesus is real.”
Out of the mouths of babes ....
There’s a story of parents who, as a last resort, put their failing 4th grade son in a Catholic school. His grades instantly shot up beyond their wildest hopes.
They had to ask him about this. The dad asked, “Son, can you tell us what happened, especially in Math? I mean, your Math grades went from a dismal F to A+. How did that happen?”
The son answered “Well knew they were really serious when I saw that guy up there nailed to the plus sign.”
And the children will lead them….
You would be shocked if you knew how many non Christian public school teachers actually believe that fear of crucifixion is a motivational factor for students in Catholic schools.
even the reply is telling the parent to expose the kid to other religions so as to try to help the child not be confused.
anything but Jesus, or biblical God, anything has got to be better/sarc
Hell, it worked on me. And those black-habitted Nuns only made it scarier.
“Is there a script? I’m lost!”
Right on target.
Not all who are lost wander, some are making a bee line for Hell.
Actually, the writer has no problem with the Biblical God minus Jesus. It's only Jesus that upsets him.
We are comfortable teaching her about other religions (Diwali celebrations, Menorah lightings).
I've noticed this in Los Angeles. Many people are broad-minded: Wicca, New Age, Eastern mysticism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism are all respected.
It's Christianity -- and only Christianity -- that discomforts.
They'll even admit this. They offer excuses. Because Christians are the majority and thus the greatest threat of theocracy. Or because of Christianity's history of persecuting other faiths.
But I think they know that Christianity -- and only Christianity -- is the Truth.
The Cross is Salvation to those who believe, and Judgement to those who don't.
bttt
my best friend ( and bandmate who is Christian also ) have noticed this.
sometimes we ask folk when they start slaming Christ to provoke us..
” why dont you hate budda or mohamed or joseph smith ? why just the “J” dude ? ever ask yourself that ? “
” if you dont believe he is any more real than buggs bunny , why dont you hate buggs bunny also ? why hate something you dont even believe in ?”
shuts them right up
every
time
/-)
( and one if those guys took our questions to heart , and came to Christ and salvation ! )
and one of those guys took our questions to heart , and came to Christ and salvation
That’s an old joke, but still a good one! LOL
Here’s two more:
What’s black and white and read all over? A newspaper!
What’s black and white and red all over? A wounded nun rolling down a hill!
“The son answered “Well knew they were really serious when I saw that guy up there nailed to the plus sign.”
I almost had beer spewing out my nose at that one!
Secular education in grade schools.
All my university was very solid Christian.
I’m not a bible banger, but I can hold my own with
Secular assh00les.
Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Mt. 18:4
The child has wisdom, and the parents have foolishness.
This story gives hope that School Reform could rescue the next generation.
People on the Left are willing to believe in anything but the truth.
We attend a very conservative church in Seattle near the University of Washington. It is amazing how many young people/college students that attend. That really gives me hope.
And they don’t walk out when the pastor does a sermon on sexual immorality, the evils of abortion, etc.
Oh, there are non-Christians, even anti-Chrstians, on the Right. Libertarianism is full of non-Christians.
And Objectivists absolutely hate Christianity. I've been around Objectivists. Just mention Christianity. It's will trigger them and off they go on a tirade.
