The Voice of the Turtledove: "There are no Palisades"
"As I'm coming down the middle of the night -- no lights. I didn't know where it was on PCH, because all of the landmarks are gone.
You don't know what street you've crossed; you don't know which house you've passed.
It's -- it's just done. It's all done.
You don't -- even --- yeah, you feel a little guilty if your house is still standing, kind of. But, you know so happy.
And it's not the house. It's just stuff in your house. And it's the house.
But -- I don't, I don't know. I mean, what is, what's --
Are these houses going to stay? This is only houses.
Where do people go to school?
I mean, we spend our lives in the Palisades.
There are no Palisades. It's done.
Pacific Palisades right now could just be taken off the map.
It's -- there is no Pacific Palisades."

Nicknamed The Palisades and Pali by surfers and locals, the Palisades coast spans from after Sorrento Beach in Santa Monica to the south, and ends at Sunset Point Beach and Malibu to the north. Beaches along the Pacific Palisades coast include: Will Rogers State Beach, Sunset Point Beach, and one of the few unofficially gay beaches in Los Angeles, Ginger Rogers Beach.

The name "Pacific Palisades" comes from the term "palisades", a geological formation consisting of a series of cliff-like bluffs situated by a body of water, in this case the Pacific Ocean, and also for the area's purported resemblance to The Palisades, located in New Jersey on the west side of the lower Hudson River.[12]

A palisade, sometimes called a stakewall or a paling, is typically a row of closely placed, high vertical standing tree trunks or wooden or iron stakes used as a fence for enclosure or as a defensive wall. Palisades can form a stockade.

Song of Solomon 2
10. My beloved speaks and says to me, Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away:
11. For, behold, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone:
12. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing bird has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land:
13. The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines in blossom give forth their scent; Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away:
14. O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the cliff, let me see your countenance, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your countenance is comely:
Zechariah 8:19. Thus says the Lord of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall become times of joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts to the house of Judah; therefore love truth and peace:
Today, January 10, 2025:
The Tenth of Tevet (Asara B'Tevet) is a fast day which commemorates the beginning of the seige of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar's armies, which eventually led to the First Temple's destruction and the Babylonian Exile. A number of other tragedies occurred in Jewish history on nearby dates. The Tenth of Tevet will next be observed on January 10, 2025, from dawn until nightfall.
The date of the Tenth of Tevet is recorded for us by the prophet Yechezkel, who himself was already in Babylonia as part of the first group of Jews exiled there by Nebuchadnezzar, 11 years earlier than the actual destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem itself.
The Tenth of Tevet is viewed as such a severe and important fast day that it is observed even if it falls on a Friday (erev Shabbat), while our other fast days are so arranged by calendar adjustments as to never fall on a Friday, so as not to interfere with Shabbat preparations.
There is no Arizona
No Painted Desert, no Sedona
If there was a Grand Canyon
She could fill it up with the lies he’s told her
But they don’t exist, those dreams he sold her
She’ll wake up and find
There is no Arizona
Not to worry. Soon it will be Mudslide Season...
There is plenty of ocean water nearby but they refused to drop any of it because the salt water is bad for the flora. So all the flora burned instead.

I’m sure the planned “smart city” will be ready just in time for the ‘28 Olympics. All those mansions were contributing to climate change.

As I understand it - The Palisades were surrounded by hills on 3 sides and the ocean on the left. Considering the intentional risk leaders engaged in, the fires were doubly worse in that enclave.

However, there are other commemorative days that fall immediately before the Tenth of Tevet and their memory has been silently incorporated in the fast day of the Tenth of Tevet as well. On the eighth of Tevet, King Ptolemy of Egypt forced 70 Jewish scholars to gather and translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek.
Even though the Talmud relates to us that this project was blessed with a miracle -- the 70 scholars were all placed in separate cubicles and yet they all came up with the same translation -- the general view of the rabbis of the time towards this project was decidedly negative. The Talmud records that when this translation became public "darkness descended on the world."

You both must be exhausted. I don't know how you do it.
With innocent, loving hearts.
Good night, Lieutenant.Well, whatever it is, it sure must be most unusual.
Uh, the reason I say that is because, you know, when my wife and I try to remember what happened yesterday or the day before, well, we don't agree on anything.
And you two, you not only agree, you use almost the exact same words to tell about it.
- Good night.
- Good night.

If people of modest means lost their home and as I understand it, no one had fire insurance, some areas probably will be “back to nature”.
And as Adam Corolla pointed out in his famous rant yesterday, even those with the money to rebuild will have to pull permits and spend months getting approvals and it will be years before the first 2x4 shows up on their lot.
And if something is done to remove those regulations or expedite things, that would be the greatest endorsement of Trumpism and DOGE possible.
There is supposed to be a very vigorously enforced curfew...
I wonder who Director Jon Turteltaub voted for.

Yup—just declare a national emergency and temporarily suspend all CA environmental regulations for a few years.
Then build one hundred desalination plants up and down the coast of CA.
Yes. Only really two ways in and out. Sunset blvd or PCH. Narrow roads, especially in the flats you see in that picture of devastation above. Houses in those flats were mostly rebuilt or remodeled into larger homes than they were in the 1950s, much closer together and less empty space between homes. In the hills above the flats the lots are larger. But it didn’t seem to matter. It was a perfect storm of dry La Niña conditions and very high Santa Ana winds. Not sure if it could have been contained even if the fire hydrants were full of water and pressurized. But you could have laid odds on something happening knowing it was going to be a La Niña winter.
State Farm dropped apx 70% of their policies in the Palisades last year, specifically citing poor management of state lands and cutbacks on dead-brush clearance (to save the habitats of field mice?). Though dead-brush likely didn’t cause this fire it seems to have started in someone’s back yard it was a risk and the state insurance commission would not allow them to raise rates enough to justify the risk. All in I wouldn’t be surprised if the total losses from all these SoCal fires doesn’t approach $30 billion in hard costs not to mention loss of productivity and activity. There are also thousands of people looking for places to live. Rents are going up again!
We moved out of the city into county land. We usually get the fires. But our neighbors are all chipping in what they can offering their extra rooms, RVs, trucks etc on social media to those who need them. We offered our extra room to our in-laws. They happen to be out of town and need to process everything but they are going to need a place to lay their heads for at least for a few weeks while they figure things out. It’s all very sad and we’ve had little sleep this week even though we are helpless we try to coordinate what we can. We’re dropping off a couple of e-bikes down there today so our niece and her husband can ride and see what she can salvage. They aren’t allowing cars but bikes can get in.
I’m wondering if the state shouldn’t just take all of the Palisades under eminent domain and sell it to a housing developer. Raze it and build a new planned community. The charm of the palisades will be gone anyway, and it could take a decade to rebuild one by one, house by house. It will be uninhabitable until it’s all cleaned up, and then anyone who still has their home will have to live in desolation and then a decade or reconstruction. If they get a couple of big developers in there, they have the expertise to put up 1000 homes in a year or two if they are unencumbered. They already have many up to code housing designs, suppliers, and expertise in hiring.
Yes I agree we need to suspend most regulations and 100% agree we have always needed more desalination plants - we needed those much more than we needed a darn speed train. The speed train project has been a money pit, and the scaled back version will run it from farm town to farm town - but the farmers need water much more than they need a silly electric passenger train.
What you’re talking about is known as a 15 minute city. The burning and rebuilding of Lahaina is another example of Klaus Schwab and his World Economic Forum.
Their socialist plan to “Rebuild for a Better Future” has been well known for years.
Evil. Pure Evil.
