Therefore faith and good works should be so closely joined together
that the essence of the entire Christian life consists in both.

Thanks for adding a meaningful post.
Not only are they so closely "joined together" and "consists in both"
as CS Lewis said they depend on each other,
as like the blades of a pair of scissors do, working together.

Though it is for sure uncomfortable for Catholics
to give Luther any affirmation of his theological work,
the Bishop is right to say Luther was correct about declarin Grace through Faith.

He could have gone further,
as Paul takes it further
into a companion of Love in a very overlooked way...
as the Sermon showed.

As St. Paul wrote...
"Faith, Hope , Love...
With the GREATEST of these being LOVE.
No ambiguity there...

Faith alone?

HMMMmmm...

If we only had some words from Jesus on this subject...

John 6:25-40

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”   (direct question)

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”   (direct answer)

30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Elsie keeps saying all you have to do is believe in that microsecond decision of Grace. That sounds easy. Peter's message says otherwise.

That elsie is a slippery dude all right!

Believe also means obey

Read James Chapter 2.

You must do his will, not just say you believe.

Nope. Elsie and his crew say obedience has nothing to do with salvation. OSAS, OJAJ means just that. Done deal. God’s law (obedience) is only for the unsaved. Right Metmom?

So you honestly believe that Indulgences came from Muslim jihad?
And references for that or just conjecture?
The Good Thief received an indulgence from the cross.
Protestants should follow his example, especially since he did the good work of defending Christ while he was on his own cross.

I never said indulgences came from Islam. You’re reading something into my statement I never claimed.

The thief on the cross received forgiveness. He didn’t have to do anything, nor do we.

Roman Catholics would do well to follow that example. Only faith in Christ…and only Christ will save you.

Saved by faith. Rewarded for works, but not saved by works.

——>Saved by faith. Rewarded for works, but not saved by works.

No.

Saved by faith (Grace) for PAST sins only...from condemnation of the law, then JUDGED on your works, over your lifetime, as a PROFESSED Christian.

Paul’s distinction between “under law” and “under grace” in Romans 6:14-15 has to do with states of persons who are “under condemnation by the law” or “freed from condemnation through Christ.

https://digitalcommons.andrews.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3392&context=pubs

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of SINS THAT ARE PAST, through the forbearance of God;” Romans 3:24-25

“But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his OLD SINS.” 2 Peter 1:9

Regarding the NEW COVENANT...

Hebrews 9:15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free FROM THE SINS COMMITTED UNDER THE FIRST COVENANT.

Grace covers PAST sins only. There is no OSAS/OJAJ...only those that foolishly believe it, because they have believed their false teachers/ministers.

Saved by Grace, THEN, judged by the law.

Sorry to inform you, Elsie, but the BIBLE clearly states that Grace ONLY COVERS PAST SINS. OSAS/OJAJ is a lie. Maybe you need to ping your Bible College buddies?

Why don’t YOU explain the texts?

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of SINS THAT ARE PAST, through the forbearance of God;” Romans 3:24-25

“But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his OLD SINS.” 2 Peter 1:9

Hebrews 9:15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free FROM THE SINS COMMITTED UNDER THE FIRST COVENANT.

Romans 2:
12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. 14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) 16In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law:

Now how is this even POSSIBLE?

Is not SIN a breaking of GOD's LAW?

You can believe all you want. It won’t do you any good UNLESS YOU BACK IT UP.

James 2:

24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

(Dead)

Man, are you serious?

Godless Gentiles have no knowledge of God’s law. The Jewish nation certainly did (and so did the Gentiles that lived with them), and so do CHRISTIANS, as they are now a CONTINUATION of Israel, ABRAHAM’S SEED, Inheritors of the promise... expected to obey God’s laws.

All you have to do is look AT THE TERMS OF THE NEW COVENANT, you know, the one that Christ shed his blood for, ratified at the cross, mentioned in Matthew 26 at THE LAST SUPPER? You know, THAT ONE, the one that you keep denying, which in effect is denying the blood of Christ (ponder that).

Hebrews 8:
10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

RATIFIED AT THE CROSS WITH THE BLOOD OF CHRIST.

You aren’t under the New Covenant? Fine. Good luck with that. No New Covenant, (no BOL), no heaven.

The only way you are getting in, after Grace, is if you OBEY. (unless one happens to die right after the moment of Grace, like the thief on the cross, etc.... Death Bed Confession of Faith).

...they are now a CONTINUATION of Israel...

REALLY?

I sure do NOT read it that way!!

Galatians 3:28-29 KJV

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

For some silly reason, I do NOT think Abraham was ISRAEL.

God gives the name Israel to Abraham’s grandson Jacob after he spends a night wrestling with God (Genesis 32:28).

Later, Israel is the name given to Jacob’s offspring and to the nation that they eventually form.

Is “Israel” from the seed of Abraham?

The answer is yes, Elsie.

Oh, and maybe I missed your post, but did you address those three texts that CLEARLY state that Grace covers PAST SINS only? If not, I’ll be looking for the ping. Thanks again.
