Luke 20

Paying Taxes to Caesar

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

Dearest Friends, I may have to drive my sister to the ER any minute, so I hope you don't mind if I share a story from February 2019 concerning the temporal world and the spiritual. (Caesar vs. God).

Here goes:

Just as I was setting up yesterday's thread, I got a phone call from my sister.

"Hey, ML, there's an estate sale right down the street, and from the FB description, it looks like there's some musical equipment there!"

"OK", I said, "Let me just finish up this thread and I'll pick you up."

So I hit the [post] button and was on my way to pick Sis up.

Now, for those who have joined this thread recently, I will give you a little background information about me, and why this Estate Sale looked so awesome. In the nine years of this thread's life I was widowed and lost my home in Florida. Yet, I managed to build a sixteen-track digital recording studio in the spare bedroom of my little apartment, had over twenty music students, produced two recitals a year, and was the Minister of Music in a church that reached out to a rough crowd (Bikers). My apartment was crammed with musical equipment, books I had written, sheet music, and self-produced cd's. I also had all the raw materials needed to produce the cd's and publish my sheet music. I was never rich, but I managed to do what I loved to do and survive.

Anyway, in October 2015, I got a call from my brother, asking me if I could come back to Boston and care for my Mom who needed live-in health care. I asked him to give me a week to get rid of all my stuff and then come and get me.

And so for the next week, I gave away or threw out all my stuff and drove back to Boston with my brothers, my dog, my hand-painted hope-chest, my guitar, and the Harley on a trailer. Six days after moving in with Mom, she passed away. And so, here I am.

In the three years that I have lived back in my home state, I have gotten a few students and have been playing some gigs, but I guess I am officially "retired" from the production end of the business. That's OK with me, but I REALLY wanted to see what was available at this Estate Sale.

Well, the Estate Sale was Amazing. An Exquisite Grand Piano, Antique Organ, high-end microphones and recording equipment, antique instruments, classroom supplies, an acoustic guitar with exquisite inlay work on an ebony fretboard, and books, books, books. My eyes bugged out of my head looking at this stuff! And the "music room" was bigger than my entire mobile home, with a cathedral ceiling, skylights, and soundproofing. I asked the guy if he took credit cards...but no. CASH ONLY. Oh well, I sighed.

Then I started to look at the books...maybe I could at least buy some sheet music, because everything else in this "Recording Artist's Paradise" was to expensive for me.

It was then, I noticed that the mountains of books were all "spiritual" and NOT in a good way, if you catch my drift. Suddenly, this Pleasure Palace of Music took on a dark turn.

"I'm done. I can't afford anything here," I said to my sister, and, since I was driving, it was my call.

"Wow, I can't believe that place! It was so AWESOME!!!" said my sister.

"Yeah...I had all of that stuff once," I said."And that was an ESTATE SALE. That means that the owner of all that stuff is DEAD. I got rid of it all, but I'm ALIVE."

And THAT'S Today's Story, which goes with Today's Scripture pretty well, doncha think?
