The Democratic governor has called on the Republican-led state legislature to repeal the abortion ban.
After the Michigan governor sued Thursday asking a court to find that the state constitution includes the right to abortion, the state’s Catholic conference urged that the state’s laws, and judicial precedence, be respected.
“It is unfortunate that the judicial branch is being used to try to invalidate a long-standing policy approved by elected representatives and left untouched by the legislature for nearly a century since,” Rebecca Mastee, a policy advocate at the Michigan Catholic Conference, said April 7.
“Let us also recall that the people of the state in 1972 voted at the statewide ballot to oppose abortion and, perhaps most relevant to today’s legal action, the state Supreme Court has precedent here, as the law in question was upheld in 1973 in People v. Bricker. Our hope is that a greater respect for the distinct and separate branches of state government returns to the political sphere, and we pray for a deeper appreciation for the life and protection of unborn children in the hearts and minds of the citizens and elected officials of the state.”
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, asked the Michigan Supreme Court to resolve whether a right to abortion is protected by the state’s constitution.
Whitmer cited Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a pending U.S. Supreme Court case that could alter or abolish legal abortion precedent, as a reason for the lawsuit.
“If Roe is overturned, abortion could become illegal in Michigan in nearly any circumstance. … This is no longer theoretical: It is reality. That’s why I am filing a lawsuit and using my executive authority to urge the Michigan Supreme Court to immediately resolve whether Michigan’s state constitution protects the right to abortion,” Whitmer said in.....

So now there is a second reason to lock up the witless witch?
I was honestly uncertain what side the Catholic church was on.
Whitmer is using her own state in state court.
Quite extraordinary.
Quite extraordinary.
(using was also correct)
they must be getting money from the demons. (democrats)
Why is that such an issue?
No, it will not "ruin your life" to carry the child to term.
After that you need not have anything to do with the child, but for a crucial span of a few month you are necessary.
I am sorry if it inconveniences you.
But you do not get to kill innocent people because they are not convenient.
You just don't.
Not if you want to have a civilization.
They are sure acting like Roe v Wade is going down.
Well said.
They are nuts. Leftists thought Judge Souter would be a staunch conservative.
Well, Sununu was telling everyone that.
“I was honestly uncertain what side the Catholic church was on.”
It is distressing that the Michigan Catholic Conference doesn’t seem to understand that a law legalizing abortion is an unjust law whether voted in by voters, legislators or judges and is unworthy of respect. That they speak of respect for voters when they vote unjustly shows a blockheadedness that is surprising in supposed leaders. John Paul’s “Gospel Of Life” should be required reading for them, he explains the obligations of Catholics in the face of unjust laws.
My bad. I read that wrong. The Michigan Catholic Conference is asking that a Pro-Life law be respected. Still, I say it is dangerous to hold up respect for the will of voters when voters throughout history and particularly in the modern world show themselves capable of extreme confusion and moral corruption. Truth should take precedence over will. At Palm Sunday Mass, we said “Give to us Barabbas,” when that murderer was placed up against the sinless Christ in a kind of popular will election. How many times did John Paul tell us opinion polls don’t decide right and wrong? Archbishop Sheen basically said: Right is right even if nobody believes it is and wrong is wrong even if nobody believes it is wrong.
