Can We Believe?
City Journal ^ | Spring 2019 | Andrew Klavan

Posted on 11/13/2021 9:16:59 AM PST by Jeff Chandler

The West is falling. Quietly, politically, without a violent upheaval, the Islamists are taking control of France. A dissolute literature professor named François retires to a monastery near Poitiers, the place where Charles Martel stopped the last advance of Islam in 732. A man at once mesmerized and dejected by the sensual pleasures of cultural decadence, François is seeking to reconnect with the Christian religion that formed the great French culture of the past.

But faith in that religion will not come to him. “I no longer knew the meaning of my presence in this place,” he says of the monastery. “For a moment, it would appear to me, weakly, then just as soon it would disappear.” He leaves the monastery, ready to convert to Islam and submit to the new order.

“I’d be given another chance; and it would be the chance at a second life, with very little connection to the old one,” he says. “I would have nothing to mourn.”

This sequence from Michel Houellebecq’s controversial 2015 novel Submission is a near-perfect fictional representation of a phenomenon I’ve noticed in many intellectuals since the latest rise of radical Islam. These thinkers see the great days of the West ending, while a violent, intolerant form of Islam infests its ruins. They believe that Europe has lost the will to live and that the loss is linked to a loss of faith in Christianity. But while they yearn to see the West revived—and while they may even support Christianity as a social good or a metaphorical vehicle for truth—they cannot themselves believe.

(The West is falling.)

It’s doing its own self-destruction by idiotic ideas, globalist agendas, anti-God liberalism, open borders, communism, socialism, and by making ‘1984’ a reality.

Absolutely incredible and destructive.

Europe invited in masses of barbarian “refugees” at the very instant in history when it needed to close its borders.

Nikita Khrushchev said, “We will take America without firing a shot. We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within....”

His minions, the liberals/communists in America, are gleefully obeying their leader.

Years ago congress and Hollywood went after suspected communist sympathizers, but apparently today, they celebrate communist sympathizers, and reward them

And brainwashed the youth. And continue to do so.

When these useful idiots get the new world they fought for, they will not like it nor will they be able to figure out what went wrong.

Spoiled brats destroying the very thing that gave them their privileged upbringing.

‘1984’ was prophetic in many ways.

The world is setting itself up for the Man of Lawlessness. Nothing is going to stop it, IMHO.

Except for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

At Armageddon.

Why would people complain about this? I’m delighted to read something not from “The Hill.”

People who knew about the Lord, who knew about His Gospel but have rejected that knowledge are the ones at risk of being turned over to depraved minds as per Romans 1:18-32.

The fruits of that depravity, when on display, are a warning to others to flee from fellowship with those displaying them.

As for Islam, it is like the wicked nations in the time of the Judges.

And these people who see repentance as as a social good but can’t bring themselves to repent would be like any ancient Israelites who personally never called out to the Lord in times of oppression even if others around them did.

Great article. One can say they believe in God, but don't believe Him. That is, believe what He has said, and live accordingly.

Why would people complain about this?

There are those here who profess to be humble while gunning for posters of excerpts.

The topic of Islam runs through the article because, in Europe, the possibility/threat of Islamic hegemony within the next 20 years has become a real possibility, some would say an inevitability.

But even as hostility to Christianity increases both in Europe and America, and is beginning to find its way into the law (usually in the context of pro-LGBTQ legislation), Islam - despite its long history of intolerance and opposition to liberal values - remains untouchable, something that cannot be criticized without risk of severe social sanctions.

Why is that? Does the left secretly admire Islam precisely BECAUSE OF its ruthlessness and intolerance? Does the left - adrift in a meaningless world - WANT to be forced into belief by a stronger hand? Does the militancy of Mohammed - as opposed to the meekness of Jesus - appeal to the left's instincts?

Or is it simply that the left - in its nihilism - wants to invite chaos into our midst, wants to see strife and death and destruction, even if they too are destroyed?

Very True. Agree. Here’s what I just wrote in a other thread that goes along with what you said about the youth getting something that they don’t realize is bad

“The left scream about “American exceptionalism”, and complain that we are not like the rest of the wor, world, that they admire so much, but they would crap, their pants if they got what they clamor for, if the right were in control of everything, and enforced the rules like China does, nk does, etc,, and not the left in control.

The left want communism, but only on their terms, with them in control but they would scream their socialist/communism loving lungs out if the right were to say “OK, communism it is. Off to the reeducation camps with everyone who identifies as non conservative.”

They would lose it if the right had spies all, through the country watching out for any signs of loyalty to liberal causes. They would become unhinged if the red flag laws that they love so much were only enforced against them, if the “see something say something” snitch rules that they, over so much were used only against them”

To believe in the Lord but not obey Him is, when we cut to the chase, actually the MO of a certain bunch of fallen angels.

Maybe that why it’s people who refuse to retain the knowledge of the Lord who get in trouble as per Romans 1?

And yet time and again we see how long suffering the Lord is, patiently, reaching out to call people to repentance, even making it possible for proverbial camels to pass through the eyes of proverbial needles … so how terrible is it that any ever get turned over to a depraved mind!

I wonder who that is? /s He is one of a cadre who are obsessed by what they call "clickbait." Well, no one forces them to click or to read, so why don't they just go to another thread?

Francis Schaeffer wrote about this “aspirational” or make-believe form of Christianity many years ago, and predicted it could never stand up against those with real beliefs, even if it was a belief in nothing. A powerful belief in nihilism can overcome a weak belief, or a pretend belief, in God.

The Left hates us. Islamists hate us.

It’s as simple as that.

Hope they enjoy the Antichrist.

Oh they don’t want to hear that Bible stuff.

They’re too smart for that.

Romans 1:22

Yep, legends in their own minds they are. They will learn exactly what the verse “pride goes before the fall” means if they don’t come into, the light by a copying Christ as savior. Hopefully they do, but wow what a mess they will bring to this great nation before they do though, because of naive lust for power. We all have to suffer for their niaevity though unfortunately.

Yet another reason I have no doubt these things will happen.

Things are changing so rapidly it’s stunning.

But expected, really.

We are told in scripture that the visible church community will become so apostate that it will be dominantly filled with people who profess to be Christian but really are not. The church will continue to profess to be Christian but most in it will actually not be true believer.

We also know a new world religion is being formed, and it has everything to do with the church compromising.... The world is being reshaped into something that we have not seen before. We are being gamed, to be integrated into a new global system.

..... The bible calls what we are experiencing now as being the last days, the end of the age. Confusion, deception, turmoil, times of distress, unrest, lawlessness, hatred of the truth are all taking place at an unprecedented scale simultaneously.
