Why has Pastor John Piper’s son become a Bible-bashing Tik-Tok star?
Christian Post ^ | 04/15/2021 | Michael Brown

On a regular basis, we are hearing reports of high-profile Christian leaders renouncing their faith, most recently Dr. Paul Maxwell, an author, former Moody Bible Institute professor, and writer for Desiring God. Yet, for many of us, it was even more shocking to learn that Abraham Piper, son of the influential pastor John Piper, had become an internet sensation, best known for his videos mocking his former evangelical beliefs.

As reported by Ruth Graham for the New York Times, “Abraham Piper became a sensation on TikTok nearly overnight. He posted his first video in November, and he now has more than 900,000 followers, many of them young people who thank him for capturing their experiences so precisely. His unlikely path to online stardom: irreverent critiques of evangelical Christianity aimed at others who have left the faith.”

It turns out that Abraham had fallen away from the faith at the age of 19, so his non-belief is not news in itself. (Personally, I knew nothing of John Piper’s family, so all of this was new to me.) What is news is the popularity of his videos, recorded in an upbeat, conversational tone that no doubt appeals to today’s youth.

What are we to make of all this?

First, we have no idea what Abraham’s own experience was with the Lord. Did he ever know Him personally and intimately? Did he ever experience God’s power firsthand? Did he ever go beyond knowing the truths of the Bible to knowing the God of the Bible?

But I do not say this to accuse or judge. Instead, I’m simply saying that, unless I could speak with him personally, I have no way of knowing whether he ever enjoyed fellowship with Jesus and whether he was ever truly born again.

In any case, rather than belittle him or demonize him, we should pray for him.

Second, Abraham is right to challenge evangelical hypocrisy, asking on one video about hell, “How are you going to take your family to Outback after church while millions of people are burning alive?”

Back in the 1980s, I preached a message titled, “Four Things Christians Do Not Believe.” They were: God, salvation, heaven, and hell. In other words, if we really believed in the God of the Bible, if we really believed in the power of salvation, if we really believed in the existence of heaven and hell, we would live differently.

When D. L. Moody was in England, he met privately with a well-known atheist.

Some of the Christian friends of the atheist asked Moody afterwards if he was able to speak to this man candidly about Jesus. Moody answered yes.

They then asked him, “Did you speak to him about hell?”

“Yes,” the answer came.

They responded, “But he never listens to us when we tell him about hell.”

Moody replied, “I spoke to him with tears.” (This is my paraphrase of the conversation.)

On a certain level, I do believe that we have presented some caricatured views about hell to others. But Abraham is right to challenge how deeply we believe what we preach. Is eternity real to us or not? Is Jesus our all in all or not? Is the Bible’s God’s infallible Word or not?

Leonard Ravenhill, a great man of prayer and revival who befriended me the last 5 years of his life, was most famous for this one saying: “Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for?”

For many of us, the answer is a loud and resounding no.

That being said, I believe that if Abraham could spend time face to face with many of our missionaries serving sacrificially around the world, or if he could spend time with the ministry I have worked with closely in India for years, he would say, “These people are living out their faith!”

I’m sure he saw good examples growing up as well, since there are plenty of fine Christians here in America (and presumably in his father’s church). And again, only God knows exactly why Abraham has rejected the faith. But he is right in pointing out the shallowness and even hypocrisy of many other American evangelicals. This remains an Achilles Heel in our movement.

Third, it is the spirit of the age to question God and to mock the Bible, part of a perfect societal storm including the following elements: 1) a superficial, me-first Christianity preached in America for the last generation; 2) the lack of personal experience with God; 3) a dearth of solid discipleship and in-depth knowledge of the Word; 4) a steady stream of leadership scandals; 5) the rise of the new atheism, and with it, the demonizing of the God of the Bible, especially the God of the Old Testament; 6) the ubiquity of the internet, instantly popularizing the latest anti-God statement and turning it into a viral meme; 7) the continued breakdown of the American family; 8) the increasing number of out and proud LGBTQ individuals, many of whom are friends and family members of Christians, causing the latter to question the Bible’s teaching on homosexuality.

Obviously, there are more factors that could be added here. But the bottom line is that we cannot ignore this ongoing apostasy, nor can we simply write off those who are on the attack.

Instead, now is the time for us to fall on our faces in fervent prayer, searching our own hearts and repenting of our own sin and hypocrisy. Along with that, we must cultivate an atmosphere of openness and honesty where people feel free to ask their questions and express their doubts and where can respond to them with patience and with truth.

The fact is that none of the attacks on our faith are really new, and Christian leaders in every generation have had to deal with their own society’s serious objections.

But our faith is based on truth, and that truth comes from the one and only God, and those who put their lives in His hands fully and without reservation will never regret doing so. Yet just because we feel secure does not mean that others do. And just because our faith is strong does not mean that the faith of our children is strong.

History teaches us that every generation must have a fresh, personal encounter with God, otherwise apostasy will set in. And that’s where we find ourselves today. What are we going to do about it?

My newest book Has God Failed You? Finding Faith When You’re Not Even Sure God Is Real, addresses the biggest reasons that people lose their faith. I pray that God will use it to restore, strengthen, heal, and make whole. And may the Holy Spirit powerfully visit Abraham Piper and bring him to repentance and faith. He will not be the first prodigal to come home.

“Pay attention to me, daddy”

This is the generation that focuses completely on their “mental health”.

“unless I could speak with him personally, I have no way of knowing”

Even if you talk to someone personally, you cannot “know”. I’m not convinced people know themselves that well, and certainly no other human can truly know what is in a man’s soul! In my honest moments, I admit I’ve lied to myself (and God) many times in my life. And I’ve deceived myself, let alone others!

Completely irrelevant; what is relevant is what he is doing now.

Rebellion against God always looks ugly and petty. If he just wanted to walk away from God, he could. But he knows the Truth and his soul is tormented from the rebellion.

I’ll also add that, as a father, I’ve come to realize I can guide a kid but I do not control the outcome. If a kid wants to rebel against God, he/she will. It really is true: You can lead a horse (or kid) to water, but you cannot make him drink!

It sure doesn’t seem to be doing them any good.

Why do we care about what Abraham Piper thinks? Why are we shocked there is a falling away?

God is the only one who converts. If He didn’t convert Abraham yet, that is His sovereign choice.

***What are we to make of all this? ***

Nothing new in youth rebellion. The Prophet Samuel’s sons became judges in Israel, and sold their judgement for bribes.

The son of Atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair became a Christian. She then rejected him before she and the rest of her family were murdered by her atheist hangers-on.

Has not John Piper himself had some recent issues with his theology?

RE: Thanks for posting, but painful to watch it happen.

Please remember that this is not without precedent.

The Bible tells us that the leaders of Israel, yes those prophets and priests who actually SPOKE with God had children who were blasphemous and pretty useless.

The tragedies of The High Priest Aaron, Eli and the prophet Samuel come to mind.

Like Father like son?

I’d lump Charles and Andy Stanley into the same category too.

RE: Has not John Piper himself had some recent issues with his theology?

Piper’s theology is sound but his APPLICATION of his theology in real life is awful. He wrote an article publicly stating that he was going to boycott the November 2020 elections because he could not vote for either Joe Biden or Donald Trump criticizing the personal morality of the latter as justification for not voting for him.

According to this duckduckgo search, John Piper has stirred the pot in both the political and theological realm.

So is this becoming a like-father, like-son issue?

I have a few difficult things to say about this article.
One is that John Piper should possibly not be in a pulpit ministry. I am basing this view, in part, on Paul’s instructions in Titus 1:6 “...having children who believe ...” regarding qualifications of an elder.
The other thing is to agree on the part about people not living out their claims about what Christians should be doing in their own lives. It seems like a lot of people are “pulling on the wrong rope” to use a sailing analogy. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that because you aren’t out knocking on doors, or proselytizing to all you encounter, that God is not at work in the lives around you.
YOU are not the determining factor in who comes to Christ.
You MIGHT play a part.
But don’t get the idea that you have any POWER in the matter.

I hear you!
I’m sorry to hear that you are suffering from that as well.
I have two young ones that I pray with and teach them about The Lord daily. I hope The Lord never lets them fall away, but I would be naive to think that it’s possible that they may.

My brother is was raised in the faith, did a full public baptism and profession of faith and is now living like hell and on his way there if he doesn’t wake up.

The road truly is narrow.

“Second, Abraham is right to challenge evangelical hypocrisy, asking on one video about hell, “How are you going to take your family to Outback after church while millions of people are burning alive?”(from the article)

I don’t think Abraham was or has the “right to challenge” anything. The premise that there is some virtue in Abraham’s accusations despite his rejection of God is one I reject strenuously. If Abraham acknowledges himself as non-Christian then he hasn’t the judgment to question how real Christians should live their lives. He has no moral authority to suggest that other Christians have no moral authority since he is coming from a thought process that assumes that there is no God. He doesn’t even have any basis to suggest that Christians going to Outback* on a Sunday don’t care about real people going to hell since he doesn’t believe in all that “hooey” Christian stuff anyway.(*The Jews accused Jesus and his disciples of grabbing corn and eating in from a field on the Sabbath and with unwashed hands, oh the horror!... they accused him, Jesus who called himself in his reply..The Lord of the Sabbath. Yeah I guess Christ didn’t care about people burning hell,either./extreme sarcasm implied).

Now if Abraham were a serious Christian reformer, fasting and praying that the modern body of believers be infused with Holy Spirit fire and repentance so that the World knows that the living God is truly in our camp then it would be a different matter. But this Abraham is not such a man, nor does he have any desire to be.... for himself, for Christ,or for us. He can go “hypocritize” his own self! He is nothing but a bit of sulfurous flattulence...released in Christianity’s “general direction”!
