Halloween: Adapt it for Christian purposes or abstain? (Bible Thumpers caucus)
Faith Presses On ^ | 10/31/20 | FPO

Going by God’s Word, there is no doubt that Halloween is worldly and celebrates the Satanic and demonic, as well as spiritual darkness, sin, evil and death without hope. It's spiritually antithetical to the Christian faith and patently anti-Christian. And that’s all part of its appeal, especially to many adults, and its celebration alone by the world has already wrought a considerable amount of spiritual damage.

"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20)

There is no saying, then, that Halloween can simply be accepted and celebrated by Christians as the world accepts and celebrates it without denying a great deal of God's Word.

So then the central question is, is it a better Christian witness and better for doing our part to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8) to abstain from Halloween altogether, or to participate in it by using it as an occasion to turn people's attention to Christ, expose the darkness at its heart and offer a godly, spiritually satisfying alternative vision of the day? And too, what should children be taught about Halloween, and should they be allowed to participate in it?

After many years of considering these questions, I do believe that Christians following the Lord's leading for themselves might arrive at either conclusion.

Bible thumpers: “Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity.” (Ephesians 6:24)

little girls and boys dressed up as princesses, angels and super heroes getting candy from neighbors is no problem

costumes that glorify death and occult practices ( tarot, seances, necromancy) are a bad deal and leave a person open to all kinds of bad things

Used to be a Christian holiday to commemorate those saints not mentioned or unknown Christian martyrs.

Thanks for another thoughtful post. I agree that it could be treated either way.

Given the world we live in today, though, I have a concern. We look at it in the context of being an aberration of our Christian world view, but may think to ourselves What harm can it really do?

However, more Satanists are coming out of the woodwork every day and pushing for their “religion” to be recognized and respected, normalized if you will. This celebration gives them leverage in society for abhorrent beliefs and practices.

If that is where we are headed, then I tend towards the view that Christians should shun Halloween.

Covid has mostly canceled it this year. The President and First Lady gave out treats a few days ago. Not participating is fine but I’m ok with giving out a few treats. I don’t go for big decorations and stuff. If some kids come I’ll give some stuff to them.

It’s the same holiday, though, and the latter isn’t some option that’s in opposition to what Halloween’s all about.

I can see celebrating Halloween, and that it could be used for Kingdom causes. But only when, like in every other situation, we have put our spiritual armor on, and tested the spirits, etc. etc.

Otherwise, for one thing, the former in the little child often becomes the latter as a teen or even an adult.

We need to triumph over the latter, and teach children to, through Christ. Halloween is a most excellent occasion to demonstrate to Christian children how through Christ we can get victory over the devil.

Really? I thought it was about dressing up in costumes, collecting candy, and having fun. But I was a kid then. And tonight? Grandkids are going to collect candy while dressed as a Princess and a Cop. Then get together with family and watch scary movies late into the night.

Pretty sure devil worship isn’t on the agenda.

Now...People voting Demoncrat? THAT is a different story!

The Head Witch of California’s Church of Satan has stated numerous times Holloween is a “ gift” for them. Lukewarm Christians seem not to understand the foot hold they are voluntarily giving to Satan, at the expense of their children. Ask yourself what does the Bible state, even more, what would Jesus say about celebrating the occult and witchcraft?

As a child I associated the day with just free candy...in the late 60’s we were able to roam our neighborhood in Raynham Massachusetts freely with little to no supervision, seemed harmless. Then as I aged and became aware of the worldly interpretation I veered away fully to the point where I don’t participate in any way . I don’t think it glorifies our loving God in any manner and I see it as an afront. Just my two cents.

I think Jesus knows we are not celebrating the occult and witchcraft!

No day belongs to Satan. The victory is won and he is defeated. That said we should do nothing to dishonor our Lord or our faith. I think costumes and trick or treating are fine but nothing occult or evil. My personal favorite was when our church had a reformation festival and kids dressed up as heroes of the reformation. My child is dressing as a princess tonight and we have happily smiling pumpkins. ( She is 7). Our christian school has no parties and nothing to mark the day. When my older kids were 8-10 ish we started going out of town over halloween and they never missed it.....

That said I hate the whole thing particularly our neighbor who has had the angel of death hanging over his garage for the last month. Gross!

sorry about the neighbor! you’d think people wouldn’t be enthusiastic to hang the angel of death over their door..

we have a dog and two cats and the door bell ringing gets everybody going so we usually turn off the lights and go out to dinner

we don’t miss it either

So you dressed them up as demons?

No. as the heroes God used to preserve the preaching of the true Gospel of Grace to the world. For demons you have to look to then catholic church. what are you doing on a Bible thumper caucus? We believe Scripture is the final authority in matters of faith not catholic mythology
