As the Republican National Convention wrapped up last night, an amazing thing happened. Schubert's Ave Maria was sung in Latin by opera singer, Christopher Macchio. It was a beautiful moment.
This was a master-stroke by Trump, likely suggested by Melania. I have posted it on some Catholic F-Book groups and it is being shared like wildfire. If you missed it, have a listen.
Ave Maria Sung at White House
The Repub’s 2020 convention was superbly choreographed and planned——it has changed the face for future conventions.
Well, for what its worth... they did have protesters on the street outside the WH last night as well... ;)
Smart people adapt to change because they can be creative. Unlike teachers, who can't figure out how to open the damn schools and do their job.
MM, they made a joyful noise. And it was beautiful. :-)
The Italianate pronunciation is generally used in the Catholic Church, though when I’ve noticed in the German Catholic Church they use Germanic pronunciation on some Latin words. In the Pater Noster, for example, the Italian pronunciation of “caelis” is “chell-iss” (as in “ciao” or “ciabatta roll”) but the Germans say “sell-iss.”
“BALANCED” with Hallelujah.
DH, if given the opportunity, would have been happy just to hear the singing the entire evening. The two of us were truly moved. Unexpected? Yes. To hear religious songs (even patriotic songs)on our White House lawn is so uncommon. Our founding fathers must be turning over in their graves before standing to applaud the production.
From the looks of this thread, the devil was certainly given a goose and a notice he will find it necessary to work even harder to gain control of this America.
Thanks for the ping.
I am not Catholic... I have no complaints... given how many Catholic governors have forbidden church worship and singing... but they allow and protect looters, rioters, and arsonists as unalienable rights... that magnificent voice bellowing off that balcony from the White House, was the best part to me, of the whole convention..
I didn't know that about the German pronunciation. We do something similar in English with a name like "Caesar."
You think with his name maybe Italian American??? He is from Long Island, NY. On his website, he will travel 3k miles to sing at an event. In church we sing the song with V Not W. Beautiful song for a right to live President.
Bttt
I am not Catholic, but I had no problem with this.
The Opening Prayer was by Rev. Franklin Graham (Evangelical).
The song “Hallelujah” is by Leonard Cohen (Jewish)
“Ave Maria” was written by Schubert, who originally titled it “Lady of the Lake”, based upon the Arthurian Legend.
However, the Latin lyrics of “Ave Maria” fit perfectly, and were nicely balanced by the other music.
BTW, “Nessun Dorma” is from an Opera by Puccini which takes place in....CHINA! LOL.
Music is Music.
The only person more upset than the Democrats about this is Bergoglio.
Yeah, what she said: Dispersit superbos.
Still too young to really understand what was going on but I found the roll call of delegates fascinating and was hooked ever since.
But typically over the years, the conventions were the same. Politician after politician giving their canned speeches to rapturous applause. But once in a while, you heard a great speech. Reagan's acceptance speech from 1980 is my personal favorite and can be found here. I really miss Ronald Reagan and Trump is probably the closest we are going to get to him in my lifetime.
But many of those speeches were boring as all get out. It seemed that speaking slots were handed out as favors and were heavily lobbied for. You'd have the dinosaurs of the past get on stage for one final moment of glory and then up-and-comers in the party would be featured as well. But pretty much all of them, career office holders.
This convention really broke that mold and I don't future conventions every going back to that old format.
Well, the name looks Italian and he seems to have been born in the US, not in Italy. You can’t always tell with surnames. I heard a talk recently by someone named Phillips who referred to himself as an Italian Catholic (from New York City).
Yes, indeed. The Devil may just have to retire to Hell for another 4 years with man in the White House. But his angels here on Earth: Nanzi, Cryin’ Chuck, and Occasional Cortex are still here.
It was this that got me.
