What would you say about abortion and rape?

Discussions about any controversial topic can be dangerous these days. It’s almost certain someone is going to get upset and maybe lose their cool. It could even end a relationship.

The easiest thing to do is avoid tough conversations altogether. Not every argument or arguer is worthy of our engagement.

But issues and people are worthy of the truth. The stakes are simply too high. C.S. Lewis once said that good philosophy is needed if for no other reason than bad philosophy exists. And I’d add, good answers are needed in our culture if for no other reason than bad answers exist. And there are some topics that must be approached only with truth and love—together.

For instance: “Is abortion justified in the case of rape? Should a rape victim be forced to carry a baby to term?”

We tackle this question in our latest “What Would You Say?” video, a series designed to help you answer our culture’s toughest questions in an understandable, trustworthy, and memorable way.

On this question, we must never forget just how heinous and evil rape is. It may be that our questioner is a victim, and if so, our words alone won’t be enough. It’s a tragic feature of the current abortion debate that pro-abortion advocates so often want to use rape victims in order to advance their cause. That’s something that you and I cannot tolerate, and we should never be guilty of.

Not only should rape victims not be used to advance the cause, they must not be ignored either. And this is exactly where the Church must come in: tending to victims’ emotional, spiritual, medical, family, and financial needs as they bring their babies to term.

With all that said, the truth is the question remains: “What about abortion in cases of rape?” Here’s pro-life apologist Stephanie Gray with a “What Would You Say” response:

Here are three things to remember. First, rape and incest represent a tiny fraction of abortions. Even if abortion could be justified in these rare situations, the vast majority of abortions are in no way justified by these exceptions.

Second, abortion in the case of rape punishes an innocent party. In cases of rape that lead to conception, there are three parties involved: the rapist, the woman, and the child. Which of these three parties is guilty of a crime and deserves to be punished? The woman did nothing wrong. The child did nothing wrong. Only the rapist is guilty. But abortion means that the innocent child is given a punishment that even the guilty rapist won’t face.

In no other situation do we suggest that a child should be punished for their parent’s crimes. In fact, we would never justify the killing of a born child who was conceived by rape. If we wouldn’t punish a child after they are born, why should we punish a child before she is born?

Third, our value as humans is not based on how we are conceived. Some people are conceived in love. Others are conceived in lust. And some, tragically, are conceived in violence.

Regardless of the circumstances, in each case an innocent, unrepeatable, and irreplaceable human being comes into existence. By virtue of being human, they have dignity and rights regardless of how they came to be.

Finally, abortion will not change what happened. Abortion may seem like a way to minimize the pain, but it will not change the past and it cannot make a victim forget what happened.

That’s just part of Stephanie Gray’s thoughtful and helpful answer to one of the most difficult questions of the abortion debate. The entire answer is available at, along with answers to many of the other difficult questions Christians face in today’s culture.

In the case of rape, Democrats won’t support the death penalty for the rapist, but they will support the death penalty for the innocent child.

I am a man, so my opinion about pregnancy in the case of rape is off my radar; however, punish the rapist to the fullest extent of the law and that should be execution (based on the totality of the circumstance). The Bible describes the circumstances and the appropriate results in Leviticus. Of course, marrying is not an option, nor is “fatherhood”.

Idealistically, the woman should not equate a pregnancy/baby with the heinous act, but rather as a creative instance of healing and innocent life-as conception is not solely the act of man/woman mating or being forced. I cannot determine what the outcome should be, but abortion is as dastardly as rape, harming one innocent (w/o a voice) is just as evil as forcing a woman with a voice....

But, like I predicated, I am a man, not a woman. As a father of girls, I would think the unborn is as innocent as the girl, and therefore in need of protection.

Ask them:

"Would you support restricting abortion to ONLY cases of rape or incest?"

Put the monkey in the lap of the baby killers!!!

The answer is you trust God.

Have the baby.

Trust God to manage things, like for example your life.

Abortion means you trust yourself while excluding God.

Rape isn’t paid murder.

Only one of these things is legal.

Abortion is intrinsically evil and immoral.

There is no moral justification. It rejects God’s gift of life and His love for us.

It allows darkness and evil to increase and multiply. We all suffer from the darkness and hatred. We see the hatred in the mass shootings, the drugs, the wars, the uncivil attitude in society, etc. We will all pay the price and many that reject God’s love will live in eternal damnation and misery.

Be positive and show our love for God and neighbor, we can change the attitude and peace in society.

God’s Peace be with you.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Misfortune sometimes happens in life, but you can’t solve every problem by killing someone. Sure it’s not the best thing for a woman to have a baby she didn’t intend and doesn’t want, but that’s the lesser of two evils. She didn’t want to get raped either but it happened.

Having the abortion after rape is just about the worst thing a woman can do to herself.

In addition to the nightmares of the rape, the woman will then have to endure the nightmares of the abortion.

I know of two women who have had abortions that have recurring dreams in which they meet their aborted child at the age they would have been. In both cases, the child is nice to their mother...they hold her hand and tell them “that’s ok mommy...its alright”. These dreams absolutely tear the women apart.

I would say why even take the bait on a case that accounts for maybe 1% of all abortions? How about we deal with the other 99% first, then we’ll talk about rape?

“What would you say about abortion and rape”.

I would say neither is ideal behavior.

A Friend and fellow warrior had a daughter who was raped and brutally assaulted to the point of severe blunt force trauma.

When she recovered from the physical beating, she found that she was pregnant. Wise cunsel was sought and she with the support of the family, carried the baby to term with the intent of adoption afterwards, even had a couple ready to begin the adoption onc ethe child was born. However, the young woman fell in love with her child and chose to remain mother to it. The parents and sibking agreed and last I heard ( now some 10 years later) the child was a healthy happy member of the family and the daughter married and had at least one other child. This was a few years back since my last contact with them- they moved to the left coast, bless their hearts.

The rapist was sentenced to 15-20 for the rape and another 10-15 for the assault, severed consecutively. He also was made to understand that if he ever contacted the woman for any reason, parental rights included, he would be ….

A child conceived as a result of rape is an innocent bystander. I'm not aware of any other crime in which innocent bystanders are subject to capital punishment.

Rape is tragic and traumatic. So is losing the use of one's legs to a drunk driver, losing one's eyesight in a random beat down, or losing an arm in an industrial accident. A rape victim, should she so choose, can give the child up for adoption in 9 months. A person crippled by a drunk driver is wheelchair bound for life.

Ultimately, both can decide to move forward with their lives and refuse to be victims, or they can embrace and dwell in their misery. That is the choice they have. Killing an innocent is not a choice.
