Pope Says Parents Cried Over Atom Bombings

TOKYO - Pope Francis has told Japanese Emperor Naruhito that he remembers seeing his parents cry over the news of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 74 years ago.

The pope traveled on Sunday to the two Japanese cities, where he urged world powers to renounce their nuclear arsenals and declared the use and possession of atomic bombs an “immoral” crime.

Palace officials say the pope told the emperor on Monday that he recalled the memory of his parent’s sorrow when he addressed survivors of the atomic bombings in the two cities.

Naruhito told Francis that he has high respect for the pope’s efforts on behalf of world peace and people’s happiness.

The emperor is a symbol of the nation and has no direct political power.

Japan says it seeks a nuclear-free world but still depends on U.S. nuclear deterrence because of the worsening security environment in the region.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga made the comments Monday, a day after Francis demanded in Nagasaki and Hiroshima that world powers renounce their nuclear arsenals and declared that the use and possession of atomic bombs was “immoral.”

“Has there ever been a more anti-American pope?”

That is his objective.

The decision to employ the A bombs rested pretty much on Truman. I don’t think he hesitated too much in deciding to do so. He also slept soundly I think for the rest of his life. The whole anti nuke movement was communist inspired because Uncle Joe and the Soviets didn’t have them. Stalin made it the highest priority to get the nuclear secrets so that the US no longer was the only nation to have the bomb. The Commie Pope is just carrying on a long tradition even 74 years later.

Well, Argentina was a “go to” country for escaped Nazis, so there is that.

There were some American families crying over the unprovoked and sneak attack on Pearl. Any concern for them?

He can continue sucking rocks.

Does he even know how many millions of American lives were saved by dropping the bomb instead of invading Japan?

I’m sure there were Germans crying over the loss of their beloved third Reich when the Allies were firebombing German cities. What’s the point Pope?

Exactly. The atomic bombs were horrible things and what happened should never be taken lightly, but having the war drag on for more years would have killed millions of Japanese and it would have also been a terrible toll on the Allies. Oh, and people in Nanjing and many other places cried, too - the Japanese weren’t there as tourists.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff estimated that Olympic alone would cost 456,000 men, including 109,000 killed. Including Coronet, it was estimated that America would experience 1.2 million casualties, with 267,000 deaths.

Staff working for Chester Nimitz, calculated that the first 30 days of Olympic alone would cost 49,000 men. MacArthur’s staff concluded that America would suffer 125,000 casualties after 120 days, a figure that was later reduced to 105,000 casualties after his staff subtracted the men who when wounded could return to battle.

General Marshall, in conference with President Truman, estimated 31,000 in 30 days after landing in Kyushu. Admiral Leahy estimated that the invasion would cost 268,000 casualties. Personnel at the Navy Department estimated that the total losses to America would be between 1.7 and 4 million with 400,000 to 800,000 deaths. The same department estimated that there would be up to 10 million Japanese casualties. The ‘Los Angeles Times’ estimated that America would suffer up to 1 million casualties.

My dad was on a troop ship headed to the amassing invasion force when the bombs were dropped. He became part of the occupation force.

We would have had to invade with over half a million men. The Japanese were preparing for a multi-year insurgency right down to making spears and homemade bombs. It would have been a drawn out bloodbath on both sides.

Don’t forget the costs of taking Iwo and Okinawa. We virtually had to kill every soldier right down to the end of the battles. They were fanatics. All the while Kamikazes were swarming the navy and doing horrendous damage to the fleet.

The Japanese felt surrender was shameful to the point death was preferred. They treated POWs as sub human because they had surrendered.

This is all called context. Something that isn’t taught with history today.

I remember my mom telling me at that time in 1945 people were getting sick of the war and welcomed the atom bombs to end it already. All you heard was families in the neighborhoods where they lived in the Bronx constantly losing loved ones. It was really wearing on people.

Had this gone the way of an invasion and multiyear bloodbath and it was found out we had a weapon that could have ended it a lot sooner, Truman would have been run out of town on a rail.

Millions of Japanese and hundreds of thousands of Americans were able to cry in 1947 because the invasion of Japan never happened.
