What Is Better, Catholic or Protestant? Francis: “Both of Them Together”

The Youth Pastoral Office of Magdeburg diocese, Germany, will organize an October 2020 “ecumenical pilgrimage” for young people to Rome.

The motto of the journey is “With Luther to the Pope”. A similar trip was already taken in 2016.

The pilgrimage is co-organized by the regional Protestant State church, although the Protestants repudiate pilgrimages.

On the trip's webpage Mit-Luther-zum-Papst.de, the tour operator, Hans Höffmann, remembers what Pope Francis said to the participants of the 2016 pilgrimage when asked by a youngster: "What is better, Catholic or Protestant? Francis answered in German: "Both of them together!”

Martin Luther attended school in Magdeburg as a boy. As a preacher, he led the city to defect from the Church. Magdeburg became the first major city to publish Luther’s writings.

Thank you for the tip good man,

I believe I’ll stroll down to visit Bill the local iron monger and purchase some tar solvent.

I’ll also take a peek at the flames in the furnace - maybe drop a brown scapular in and watch it burn...

Mark 17 posted the operant passage for you more than 100 posts back. Have you been skipping posts on a thread you posted???

John 1:12, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

I think it's pretty clear that Jesus wants us to know Him on a personal level - we have fellowship with Him and with one another.

He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. (I Corinthians 1:8,9)

I believe God’s words.

Oh, I believe in God's word's also; including these:

13 Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. 14 How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it! Matthew Chapter 7

The growth from there is due to the presence of HIS SPIRIT seal upon the once dead spirit.

Nothing but hogwash; but amusing never the less.

Your pride drives you onward, sadly. Is there any sin you or I could commit now or in the future that God would be surprised by it?

Stop striving for eternal life. Just bow your head and say thank you Lord Christ for calling me, for I know you will do it ALL. Be born from above and learn to ignore Francis the talking Catholic mule. He is not beyond God's reach, but if you keep rejecting the Promise of God you soon will be.

Stop striving for eternal life.

Very, very disturbing thing to state. But now I fully understand your position.

Very disturbing.

Do you believe you are body, soul, and spirit? Do you believe death is on your spirit? Do you believe JESUS is the means to erase that death on your human spirit?

You so cryptic. Do you work at that or does it come naturally?

Disturbing you say? ... How much eternal life have you earned so far, through the Catholic Mass, through running your rosary, through devotion to The Catholic Mary? Do you wear Catholic medals and scapulae? When do you expect to receive eternal life?

The following is not hogwash, ebb:

“Does this offend you? What if you saw the Son of Man going up to the place where he was before? It’s the Spirit who gives life; the flesh accomplishes nothing. The words that I’ve spoken to you are spirit and life."

Yes, sometimes Jesus speaks literally, and sometimes figuratively; and sometimes using an expression called synechdoche, which means he refers to a part (for instance, "Flesh") when he means a whole (His entire Being). So figuring out which way He means a particular word or phrase (literal meaning, metaphor, or synechdoche) requires discernment. It is a good principle to let Scripture interpret Scripture. Accordingly, we rely heavily on the accompanying and subsequent teaching and example of the Apostles in the rest of the NT.

Indeed! You sound like me now. If only that was the basis for all Catholic doctrine, for distinctive Catholic teachings are not manifest in the only wholly inspired substantive authoritative record of what the NT church believed (including how they understood the OT and gospels), which is Scripture, especially Acts thru Revelation.

And as regards Catholic Eucharistic theology, we should ask:

Where in all of Scripture did Jesus Christ appear as an inanimate object, which by all tests of physicality would be just that? 0

Where in Scripture is the manifest physicality of Christ emphasized as establishing who the real Christ was, in contrast to one whose bodily appearance did not correspond to what He physically was? (Is. 53; Lk. 24:39; John 20:27; 1 John 4:2; 5:6,8)

Where in all of Scripture did the words of the Lord's supper necessarily teach that the body that "is broken" and the blood that is shed, appeared as bread and wine, rather than literally appearing as the manifestly physical flesh and blood that was bruised and shed? 0

Where in Scripture is actual water referred to as blood, and thus poured out unto the Lord, and bread referred to as bread for the people of God, and the body of Christ as the church being bread? (2 Samuel 23:16-17; Num. 14:9)

Where in all of Scripture is spiritual life obtained by literally physically consuming anything? 0

Where in Acts and the apostles teaching in the NT (these being interpretive of the gospels) is spiritual life obtained by hearing and effectually believing the gospel of the grace of God? Acts 10:43; 15:7-9; Eph. 1:13)

Where from Acts onward in the NT is communion/partakers with the object of religious feasts and each other realized by literally consuming the flesh of the object of worship? 0

Where from Acts onward in the NT is communion/partakers with the object of religious feasts and each other realized by sharing a meal together ("feast of charity") in a way that effectually evidences remembrance? (1 Cor. 10,11 )

Where are distinctive Greek word for a separate class of sacerdotal believers (hiereus; archiereus; hieráteuma) distinctively used for NT pastors? 0

Where is a distinctive Greek word (hieráteuma) for a separate class of sacerdotal believers used for all believers? (1Pt. 2:5,9; Re 1:6; 5:10; 20:6).

Where from Acts onward in the NT are church pastors charged with or exampled uniquely conducting the Lord's supper and offering it up as a sacrifice for sins and dispensing it to the people as spiritual food? 0

Where from Acts onward in the NT are church pastors charged with or exampled as preaching the Word and feeding the flock with the Word which is called spiritual food ("milk," "meat") by which they are nourished? (Acts 20:28; 1Pt. 5:2 ;1Co. 3:22; 1Pt. 1:22; Heb. 5:12-14; 1 Timothy 4:6; Acts 20:32

Count me in!

"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (1 John 5:13)

Is it the same as the “mark”? Yes, the technology is here already to implement that very thing. Back in the 70’s and 80’s it had yet to be imagined but now we can easily see how it might work. Nobody had even heard of microchips or nanotechnology back then.

How precious!

But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matt. 19:14)

Amen,those wonderful promises are everywhere!

Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.(Malachi 3:16,17)

Here’s another one for you, metmom.

Me too bro, but you asked me the same question on another thread. I answered it on another thread. I am not going to justify anything to you. Why are you cross threading?
I will say one thing, that I also said on that other thread. I couldn’t care less, what anyone thinks about my assurance of salvation. It’s a beautiful thing. 😆😆😀😚👍☝️👊🤣😂👀
