Despite the fact that God expresses His love for the righteous throughout the Old Testament Jew and gentile alike in a new book, one of Americas biggest mega-pastors claims the Hebrew Scriptures portray Him as unapproachable, living behind a curtain with love reserved only for His covenant people, suggesting He is a different deity than the one portrayed in the New Testament.
Its the latest shocking suggestion from Andy Stanley, whose suburban Atlanta congregation exceed 34,000 attendees and a national following.
He writes in Irresistible: Reclaiming the New that Jesus Unleashed on the World, released last week, that the concept of a loving God is a uniquely Christian idea.
In chapter 18 of his book, he cites 1 John: 4:16 with what he calls a unique theological statement: God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
John equated God with love, he writes. This was novel. This was unique. This would change the world. God is love is a uniquely Christian idea.

I knew a guy who was a big fan of Stanley.
He was just about what you would guess.
It baffles me that someone whose father-whatever critiques you have of him-is so Biblically rooted turned out this way.
A Fag?
God wants us all to know Him. EXODUS 9:1-19 shows us that God wanted everybody to hear Him.
The headline does a poor job of conveying just what the issue is. No need to engage in left wing tactics. His ‘theology’ does an injustice to the unified God of the Bible as understood by mainstream Christian orthodoxy. It’s heretical but castigating it as against the Jewish God is a bit over the top.
The whole book of Jonah was about the love He had for the Evil Pagan Nineveh.
Would have to see the entire comment in context. It is true that God was a lot harsher toward sinners prior to Jesus’ sacrifice. Indeed, Jesus’ sacrifice illustrates the wrath of God toward sin.
Oddly enough he was not a Fag and dated a really hot girl, but:
He was president of a Lesbian club in college. I guess that they would choose a guy as their president is also a bit odd.
Mosaic law was much more stringent than what supplanted it.
OTOH,
And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
“And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.”
No Temple, no sacrifice, just repentance and changing their ways was enough.

Doesn’t he know that many of the scriptures and practices of Christianity came from the Jews?
Rahab the harlot was saved at Jericho because of her faith.
She later was specifically mentioned in the lineage of Jesus.
The city of Nineveh?
Oops.
Looks like Andy missed Ps. 103 and Ps.136.

This was a lot different circumstance. In Moses' time the people were purified and made a compact with God to stay true to Him. They were given a mission to preach the Gospel to the world and prepare the way for the Messiah. God does not change but circumstances do. Harshness is from a human perspective besides. God is just and merciful but He has a pathway for all who will listen and watch and those who do not will be cast out.
This is the Marcionite heresy getting back up off the mat.
The Bible is a unified whole. Of course, Jesus — the Incarnation, the teachings, the whole Passion, the Resurrection, the giving of the Holy Spirit — is pivotal. That’s because He is the whole focal point! And when He quoted scripture, when the apostles used and quoted scripture, they were using the OT, and thus were tying the old and new together in the process. We are to continue to do so today. We should be looking for the Love of God in the OT and we will always find it when we understand it through the lens of the NT.
Incidentally, I have a list as long as my arm (I take a 34” sleeve) of situations in the Bible and in recent church history where the passing of the ministerial baton from fathers to sons often turns out poorly. I really don’t like the practice. The ministerial baton needs to come directly from God.
