Catholic Charities of Buffalo will no longer provide foster care and adoption services to new clients because a New York state law would force it to violate Catholic teachings on homosexuality and marriage.
The organization, which serves people of need across Western New York, announced Thursday that it has become the latest Catholic Charities branch to halt adoption and foster services because of conflicts with state and local LGBT discrimination protections.
The entity will continue to serve its existing foster families but will not accept new applications until its contract with Erie County Department of Social Services expires in March 2019.
The move comes weeks after a same-sex couple submitted an application with Catholic Charities to become adoptive or foster parents, according to a news release. The charity doesn't place children with same-sex couples because it follows Catholic teachings that dictate that marriage is between only one man and one woman.
However, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited under the state's Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act.
"It is with deep sadness we acknowledge that the legacy of the high quality, exceptional services which our staff provides to children and families through foster care and adoption will be lost," Catholic Charities CEO Dennis C. Walczyk said in a statement.
Walczyk said that charity is working with the New York Office of Children and Family Services and the Erie County Department of Social Services to ensure a "smooth transition" for foster care children and parents affiliated with Catholic Charities as well as those who have applied to be foster or adoptive parents.

This is where we are in our culture. Because of discrimination against a homosexual, we aren’t allowed to have a preference for traditional married couples in adopting.
Is it really a benefit to society, that now they won’t be providing adoption services at all?? Is this really a beneficial outcome of the push for homosexual marriage, and the whole array of LGBT issues????
Well, they’re doing the right thing. Sad, though.
Catholic Charities, apart from this, does not have a good track record IMO.
Organizations like Catholic Charities never should have been serving as an adoption agency for the State of New York in the first place. God doesn’t serve Caesar under any circumstances.
This is just sad
OK, but really, it’s not a great time for anything with “Catholic” in the name to be getting on a high horse with respect to the proper care of children.
I am a Buffalo guy. To hear the resignation in the voice of the administrator was heartbreaking. Libs, of course, could care less.
These agencies need to be firmer, in refusing adoption and fostering to “individuals who are either mentally, sexually or emotionally unsound, or who place their own feelings and self importance far ahead of those children they crave to control to validate themselves.”
I’m sure they were very unhappy and I feel for the kids who won’t get decent homes. But it is still the honorable thing to do. I wonder if the state will STILL find a way to punish them?
We need to be discriminating against homosexuals. Homosexual acts should never have been made lawful. Had they stayed unlawful, even if enforcement was rare, we would not have to endure these perverts and their allies running amuck as they are.
WOW! A catholic organization standing by its principles. How rare is that nowdays!
Wonder if it might have been more strategic to change to an adoption consulting agency, not facilitate adoptions in NY and channel to their office in PA or NJ...
What’s so sad about it? The Catholic Church fostered adoptions for hundreds of years before it decided to become an arm of the government.
What is the state’s hold over Catholic Charities? Why can’t Catholic Charities simply operate independently of the State of New York. Match a child with adoptive parents; the parents file for a legal adoption. Unless Catholic Charities is using state money, I don’t see where the state comes into it.
Your message here is somewhat garbled. No matter what the rest of their “track record” is like, it’s better to be inconsistently right than consistently wrong.
One of the greatest institutions in the history of NYC was the NY Foundling Hospital, stared by Elizabeth Bayley Seton and run by her Sisters of Charity NY.
“WOW! A catholic organization standing by its principles. How rare is that nowdays!”

Oh,stop it-—Catholic Charities in Boston stopped adoptions for the same reason TWELVE years ago.
.
If we ...meaning all of us not just Catholics..really believed in what we say then we would privately funds adoptions.Leavery the immoral govt out of it.
