Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand. Its use is becoming widespread in the bilingual names of national organisations and institutions. The term was originally used by Māori in reference to only the North Island. Since the 1990s, it has been customary to sing New Zealand's national anthem, "God Defend New Zealand", in both Māori and English, exposing the name to a wider audience.

No the term refers to the South Island...

Aotearoa means “land of the long white cloud” the row of mountains down the spine of the South Island...the Southern Alps...Mt Cook etc

looked like a white cloud from out at sea as the Maoris first saw NZ 1,000 years ago when they first arrived in their 7 outrigger canoes from Tahiti...about the same period their relatives left Tahiti/Bora Bora for Hawaii...

As for God Defend New Zealand...all Maoris learn English as their first language and sing the songs in English...

They already knew the song...its sung by school children several times during the year...in English...
