St. Augustine, Florida, is a small city with a lot of “firsts” to its credit. It was the first permanent European settlement in what is now the United States. It was the site of the first Mass in the U.S. It is the place where the first shrine to Our Lady was erected (it stands on the grounds of the Mission Nombre de Dios). It was from here that the first Catholic mission to American Indians was launched. And, now, here comes the surprise — St. Augustine was the site of the first Thanksgiving celebration in America. As you’d expect, that detail might not go over well in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Here’s what happened.

In 1565, a fleet of Spanish ships bearing 800 colonists and 700 soldiers sighted land. Since it was Aug. 28, the feast of St. Augustine, the colony was named in honor of one of our greatest doctors of the Church. The entire colony — all the settlers, all the troops — went ashore on Sept. 8. As he set foot on land, the admiral of the fleet, Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, kissed a crucifix and then claimed the land for the king of Spain...

There have been many different first Thanksgivings in America. The descendants of the Pilgrims were the first to want to remember and honor it by celebrating it yearly. I haven’t heard that any of the other groups, with rightful claims to a first Thanksgiving, had descendants who did so.

Plus, it was the escape from the political dictates of The Church of England that was the motive for the Pilgrims. That's the difference.

And it became enshrined in the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of The United States.

***female bishops for their church
****Lesbian bishops for in their church

It HAD to happen when they left the one, true Church of Jesus, the Catholic Church. So, what's next for them? Multiple wives/husbands? marriages with pets?

I dunno.
I GUESS that some Christians, non-Catholics, that is, have FORGOTTEN:

Catholic Christopher Columbus sailed from Catholic Spain in 1492 and soon after other Catholics from Spain led expeditions. Ponce de Leon founded Florida in 1513 and St. Augustine was settled in 1565, St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Florida’s first governor. He named the settlement “San Agustín”, as his ships bearing settlers, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida eleven days earlier on August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine.
