Is Mary not a Virgin? The German Bishops’ New Bible Translation Leaves it... Unclear
LifeSite News ^ | 9/21/16 | Jan Bentz

GERMANY, September 21, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — The German Bishops have presented a new “Unified Translation” of the Bible that follows a significant modernization of the language and will be binding for all German-speaking areas starting in 2017.

On Tuesday, the German Bishops Conference (DBK) presented in Fulda the fruit of many years of scientific work: a new edition of the so-called “Unified Translation" (Einheitsübersetzung) of the Bible into German. It’s called “unified” because, from the original published from 1962 onward, these editions are supposed to be used ecumenically, unifying Catholics and Protestants in Germany. The original aim, however, was thwarted in 2005 when Protestants reverted to the Luther translation.

The leader of the research project was the bishop (now emeritus) of Erfurt, Joachim Wanke, who explained that the new edition is a “moderate revision” of the older text. Wanke added that a translation is always also an interpretation. The new edition shows more “braveness” to present “biblical jargon,” he said, reported by kath.net.

According to Jewish tradition, the personal names of God cannot be pronounced, so “Yahweh” is substituted by “Lord” in the new edition. In fact, every paragraph has a change, explained Michael Theobald, president of the German Bible Association.

When the apostle Paul calls two new followers, they are not two men anymore, Andronicus and Junias; rather, a new discovery showed that apparently it was one man and one woman, hence Andronicus and Junia. This led to the discussion that the word “apostle” must be applied to women as well as men (Author’s note: In German, different genders of the word exist and usually gender-ideologists insist on using male and female forms).

Other changes are more ideological.

Most frightening is the change to the iconic Isaiah passage (7:14): “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son”.....

I think there is some truth to be found in a lot of places. I also think that most everything is colored by the viewpoint of its authors. So you take what’s true and let go of the rest.

Which re-formed religious movement (assumed to have started in the 16th Century) does your faith community come from ? Where is it in history ?

My faith does not come from any re-formed religious movement as my faith is not in religion but in the living, resurrected Son of God.

My faith comes from God.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

There is no name like that in the scriptures. Do you invoke that as a proper name in your daily (or nightly) prayers ?

There is no name like *Mary, Mother of God* in the Scripture. Do you invoke that as a proper name in your daily (or nightly) prayers?

If they were sons of Joseph but not Mary, then how were tehy siblings of Jesus? (Unless Joseph was also his biological father.)

If Joseph had children from a prior marriage they were siblings; same father, different mothers. Sons of Jacob ...

No, you are believing in the wrong interpretation of the inspired words Jesus spoke to Peter in the hearing of the group, and that means you have been misdirected.

Do you have some academic credentials as a linguist that would qualify you to direct someone ?

Douay-Rheims                   And he knew her not till she brought forth her first born son: and he called his name Jesus.

New American Bible          He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

Revised Standard Version but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

New International Version But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Any Aramaic translation of the NT is not inspired. I don't need human-generated credentials to be able to use the common grammar rules I have learned how to effectively apply in my courses in English as a first language, Latin, French, German, top grades in doctoral examinations on translating scientific German, and in current study of NT Greek.

If you want to argue on this, argue with the NT grammarians J. Gresham Machen, W. E. Vine, William Mounce, H. E. Dana, Julius R. Mantey, Walter Jerry Clarke, John H. Dobson, and Daniel B. Wallace, all of whose textbooks I have and study from; as well as J. Weingreen for Classical Hebrew. I also possess interlinear texts for both OT and NT, as well as the commonly used Strong's Exhaustive Concordance with Hebrew and Greek, Young's Concordance, Marvin Vincent's three volumes of Word Studies in the New Testament, Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon, Gesenius' Hebrew & Chaldee Lexicon, as well as a quite useful raft of Bible software from Logos and e-Sword, and access to anything generally available on the internet.

In this matter, I have just correctly directed you, guided by the inspired Words of the Holy Ghost as revealed by consummate translators of the King James Bible, masters in classical Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, and the cognate languages, with reference in picayune issues to the Textus Receptus of Desiderius Erasmus and modified by Scrivener, published by the Trinitarian Society.

I also have the United Bible Society's Critical New Testament Greek Text, as well as a big, fat compilation of the Byzantine/Majority Textform with complete page-by-page verb parsing by Maurice A. Robinson and William G. Pierpont.

My discipler of some 25 years has been the author, pastor, missionary, and Bible translator Fred Wittman, whose volume 'The Gospels -- A Precise Translation' (click here) is freely available. My resource for difficult nuanced passages is a local pastor who is now finishing his doctoral sivinity thesis, a fine Greek and Hebrew instructor. For a pastime, he is currently memorizing Psalm 119 word for word--in the Hebrew.

Now, I'm not going to play the game of "my credentials are better than your credentials" with you, so you can stop now on that approach.

But there's nothing quite like being in complete agreement with the unimpeachable credentials of the plenarily and verbally inspired, inerrant, preserved Word of The God, which confounds your theory of the foundation of Christ's Church resting on any single disciple of Jesus and not on Jesus Himself.

Although it may be you have been persuaded that the Roman Catholic Church is founded on the person and work of Simon "Kephas" bar Jonah, it is Jesus Christ's Church which is in union with Him only in Heaven (Heb. 12:22-23), invisible to us; not the--at this time imperfect--leavened, visible institute(s) on earth.

I do not trust the Vatican-based worldwide religious organization as being a valid, reliable authority on expounding the Biblical Texts, inasmuch as it places itself over the Word as the final authority on how God deals with man, rather than God's Word being in authority over the earthly churches in every respect, with its commandments manifold, detailed, and explicit to any spiritually mature disciple of Christ.

The carnal mind is not subject to ... satan is the most clever attorney ever created, and he can divert a carnal mind onto numerous dead-end tracks. We post for the silent readers. Some on these threads will refuse to hear the Gospel of Grace no matter how many times it is offered, their pride will not allow them to see the Truth.

Sorry for you and your effort to divert, you are trying to get me to focus upon institutions and I have already told you to what CHURCH I am attached. It began in 33AD. Being thoroughly institutionalized has conquered your mind, but God’s Spirit can cut through the detritus, if you will hear The Gospel of Grace.

Now, I'm not going to play the game of "my credentials are better than your credentials" with you, so you can stop now on that approach.

Yet you spent many words that seem to me centered on that effort and are essentially left with some coursework in German and the work of others.

The debate over Petros/Petra would have been solved had the extant text translated as:

You are an insignificant pebble, but on the profession of your faith I will build my Church; but it will be overcome for 1500 years until cometh the antisemite, the lawyer, and the adulterer. They will hate those who hold you in such high esteem as to think I could use you as the Apostle in the foundation of My Church, with Me as the chief cornerstone. I tell you ahead of time so people will not be confused and deceived for a thousand and half a thousand years. They will reform it into many branches, and continually reform and recreate it in the image of their minds; they and their followers, until the end. It will never be one until I return to judge everyone. Study the Greek ..,

There is no translation like that. We are left with the Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, history, faith, and the Holy Spirit. If you are a convinced Baptist Brider, follow your conscience. Otherwise your faith community is from the reformation.

You are absolutely right on this, my dear Friend and Brother in Christ. So let us pray to ascertain the tempter’s efforts, and refuse to be drawn back into our own carnal roots. May we follow the LORD in using the sharpness of Speaking the double-edged Written Word of God, as He did in His Own time of temptation, our new man eating from the Tree of Life, strengthened and sustained in quenching the traces of habitual response still lingering from that dead “old man.” He was crucified with Christ, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin; for he that is dead is freed from sin.

The debate over Petros/Petra would have been solved had the extant text translated as: . . . Well, that is not my translation, it is yours, and it reads back into the context an abundance of even more cant that the Savior never proposed there. Your drivel does not "solve" the non-existent debate. The "petra" was not Simon bar Jonah, There is no debate.

Otherwise your faith community is from the reformation.

Constituents of the common community of true regenerated believer-disciple-priests whom Jesus of Nazareth calls Friends face your assertions right here on FR, and destroy them by concurrently applying the same remedy of Pauline/Petrine Sola Scriptura, sole fide that has brought as many as will to salvation, and deflected as many as won't back to their old false and deceitful doctrines (2 Peter 3:14-18).

My Faith Has Found A Resting Place (click here)
(in His Faithfulness--Semper Fideles)

(1)
My faith has found a resting place,
Not in device nor creed;
I trust the Ever-living One,
His wounds for me shall plead.

(Refrain)
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea;
It is enough that Jesus died,
And that He died for me.

(2)
Enough for me that Jesus saves,
This ends my fear and doubt;
A sinful soul I come to Him,
He’ll never cast me out.

(3)
My heart is leaning on the Word,
The written Word of God,
Salvation by my Savior’s name,
Salvation through His blood.

(4)
My great Physician heals the sick,
The lost He came to save;
For me His precious blood He shed,
For me His life He gave.

But according to the story, Jesus is a virgin birth — therefore Joseph is not his biological father. Thus, his children, unless they are also Mary’s, would not be siblings.

The earliest versions we have, which oare not originals, have numerous differences from the versions that are in the Bible. Some have additions, some have subtractions, and some have what appear to be transcription errors. Others are pseudepigraphic — not written by the person who is listed as the author, including some of Paul’s letters.

You are an insignificant pebble, but on the profession of your faith I will build my Church;

There is no translation like that.

MMMmmm...

As regards the oft-quoted Mt. 16:18, note the following bishops promise in the profession of faith of Vatican 1:

 • Basil of Seleucia, Oratio 25:

'You are Christ, Son of the living God.'...Now Christ called this confession a rock, and he named the one who confessed it 'Peter,' perceiving the appellation which was suitable to the author of this confession. For this is the solemn rock of religion, this the basis of salvation, this the wall of faith and the foundation of truth: 'For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus.' To whom be glory and power forever. — Oratio XXV.4, M.P.G., Vol. 85, Col. 296-297.

Bede, Matthaei Evangelium Expositio, 3:

You are Peter and on this rock from which you have taken your name, that is, on myself, I will build my Church, upon that perfection of faith which you confessed I will build my Church by whose society of confession should anyone deviate although in himself he seems to do great things he does not belong to the building of my Church...Metaphorically it is said to him on this rock, that is, the Saviour which you confessed, the Church is to be built, who granted participation to the faithful confessor of his name. — 80Homily 23, M.P.L., Vol. 94, Col. 260. Cited by Karlfried Froehlich, Formen, Footnote #204, p. 156 [unable to verify by me].

• Cassiodorus, Psalm 45.5:

'It will not be moved' is said about the Church to which alone that promise has been given: 'You are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.' For the Church cannot be moved because it is known to have been founded on that most solid rock, namely, Christ the Lord. — Expositions in the Psalms, Volume 1; Volume 51, Psalm 45.5, p. 455

Chrysostom (John) [who affirmed Peter was a rock, but here not the rock in Mt. 16:18]:

Therefore He added this, 'And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; that is, on the faith of his confession. — Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Homily LIIl; Philip Schaff, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf110.iii.LII.html)

Cyril of Alexandria:

When [Peter] wisely and blamelessly confessed his faith to Jesus saying, 'You are Christ, Son of the living God,' Jesus said to divine Peter: 'You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church.' Now by the word 'rock', Jesus indicated, I think, the immoveable faith of the disciple.”. — Cyril Commentary on Isaiah 4.2.

Origen, Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew (Book XII):

“For a rock is every disciple of Christ of whom those drank who drank of the spiritual rock which followed them, 1 Corinthians 10:4 and upon every such rock is built every word of the church, and the polity in accordance with it; for in each of the perfect, who have the combination of words and deeds and thoughts which fill up the blessedness, is the church built by God.'

“For all bear the surname ‘rock’ who are the imitators of Christ, that is, of the spiritual rock which followed those who are being saved, that they may drink from it the spiritual draught. But these bear the surname of rock just as Christ does. But also as members of Christ deriving their surname from Him they are called Christians, and from the rock, Peters.” — Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew (Book XII), sect. 10,11 ( http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101612.htm)

Hilary of Potier, On the Trinity (Book II): Thus our one immovable foundation, our one blissful rock of faith, is the confession from Peter's mouth, Thou art the Son of the living God. On it we can base an answer to every objection with which perverted ingenuity or embittered treachery may assail the truth."-- (Hilary of Potier, On the Trinity (Book II), para 23; Philip Schaff, editor, The Nicene & Post Nicene Fathers Series 2, Vol 9.
