He once fought fires in Hells Kitchen. Now hell be fighting the fires of hell.
After two decades of beating down blazes and saving lives, retired FDNY Captain Tom Colucci has found a higher calling hes about to become a Catholic priest for the New York Archdiocese.
Timothy Cardinal Dolan will welcome Colucci, 60, to the priesthood on Saturday during a special ceremony at St. Patricks Cathedral.
I spent 20 years saving people. Now I will save souls, said Colucci, the first city firefighter to shed his bunker coat for a priests collar.
I thought about being a priest earlier in life, but I put it off when I got into the Fire Department. But when I was approaching retirement, I thought about being a priest again.
Responding to the terror attack at the twin towers on 9/11 where five of his fellow firefighters at Engine 3 in Chelsea were killed helped guide his decision, he said.
As a firefighter, I saw a lot of suffering and misery from bad fires and tragedies like 9/11, he said. But as I saw the worst of humanity, I saw the best of humanity as well. Thats what Christ is about.
You see bad things and wonder, How could God allow this? but sometimes tragedies get us closer to God. I realized I want to help people on these spiritual journeys.

Saving people from fire in this world and the next.
He should go back to fire fighting. He can’t save any souls. Only God can.
Yes, he can save souls. God will work in and through him to do so. I see it everyday and you can too...if you have eyes to see and ears to hear. Blessings to you and yours.
I love it. Great transition in salvation.
Best wishes for a long and fruitful ministry.
Thank you
Congrats and God Bless!
God can and does save souls, but He also sends the people who do His will to spread the good news of the Gospel of Jesus.
This is a piest:
This is a priest:
Learn the difference! [/joke]
Ha. I was going to ask what a “piest” was.
“He cant save any souls.”
You need to read 1 Corinthians 9:22. This firefighter turned priest is saying nothing differently than St. Paul.
AXIOS, AXIOS, AXIOS!
EXCELLENT comparison!!!
I know THREE men who were CPAs but became priests. TWO had a wife who died and they became priests. I don't the story on the third priest but he was in his 40's when he became a priest, so there MIGHT be a similar story there.
A poster here once always made the mistake with "Peace on earth." He wrote: "Peach on earth." Lol. Nothing wrong with peaches either!
He's a fine-looking man with an open face and open heart.
