Astronomical sales of a tiny figurine of the Protestant reformation figure Martin Luther, have confounded its maker, Playmobil, by becoming the fastest-selling Playmobil figure of all time.

The German toy manufacturer announced this week that the first edition of 34,000 pieces sold out in less than 72 hours, forcing the company to urgently request its factory in Malta to produce more of the so-called “little Luthers”. Fans have been warned that the next batch will not be available until the end of April.

“...he had very modern ideas. He believed every person had the right to an education, including women and girls. In this aspect, he was a very 21st century man.”

Don’t leave them in the toy box together or you will show up one day to find jessie jackson and al sharpton in the box, too!

Yup. Biggest anti-semite before Adolf Hitler came on the scene.

That's just rude and false. Perhaps a refresher from Martin Luther's small catechism.

The Eighth Commandment
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

What does this mean?
We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything.

I thought Protestants

Have you ever talked with a Protestant instead of at them? Your misconceptions might be cleared up pretty quickly!

I need this RIGHT NOW. BTW, are you familiar with the "Thistle and Rose" chess set from Beneagles brand whiskey? It comes with a John Knox chesspiece!

Unlike John Calvin, I don't recall that Martin Luther actually ever had anyone beheaded or burned at the stake.

He was antisemitic in the same way that Pat Buchanan is antisemitic: lots of bellicose talk, but no action. He's not even in the same league as Jew haters like Jimmy Carter and BO.

In his book “On the Jews and Their Lies,” Luther advocated very strongly that their houses of worship be burned to the ground and that they be driven from the community. If a Jew dared to utter the name of God he was to have dung thrown at him. These are just some of the nicer things Luther had to say.

As a powerful political and religious figure his words would have carried a lot of weight in the community. Maybe he didn’t wield the ax, but his words were filled with such venom that it could have caused others to take action,

“...he had very modern ideas.

His ideas about Jews were so modern, that the Nazis implemented them.

The prevailing scholarly view[45] since the Second World War is that the treatise exercised a major and persistent influence on Germany's attitude toward its Jewish citizens in the centuries between the Reformation and the Holocaust. Four hundred years after it was written, the Nazi Party displayed On the Jews and Their Lies during Nuremberg rallies, and the city of Nuremberg presented a first edition to Julius Streicher, editor of the Nazi newspaper Der Stürmer, the newspaper describing it as the most radically antisemitic tract ever published.[46]

“No wonder the Roman Catholic church was against him.”

NO,the Roman Catholic Church was against him because he preached heresy against the teachings of Jesus. I have nothing against Luther. I am sure his church has done some good work. If you’re a Lutheran, enjoy it, and leave the rest of the God-fearing religions alone.

That is hysterical. I know a few Lutherans who’d love one, except now they cant get one.

Maybe he didn’t wield the ax, but his words were filled with such venom that it could have caused others to take action . . .

The key words here are could have. In the Nuremburg trial case of Julius Streicher, it was actually proven that the words which he wrote did. I'm not defending Luther's idiotic statements here. But they didn't rise to the level of advocating murder or of actually executing theological opponents as John Calvin and the Spanish Inquisition did.

Maybe but he had the same passionate rhetoric for the Mohammedans. He would also have the same rhetoric for Mormons, Heavens Gate, JWs and others.

So where is the line drawn? I for one, am not so quick to be toe the PC-line and protect the Jewish Faith (as separate from the Jewish people).

Luther did mighty things, but he never overcame all of the wrong ideas he picked-up from Rome and the Rome-dominated culture in which he lived. I don’t excuse any wrong he did.

It’s interesting how so many decry Luther’s anti-Semitism while conveniently overlooking where he learned it. Where are your denunciations of that famous 19th century anti-Semite, Pope Pius IX? Why did John Paul II beatify Pius IX? Why did Rome beatify someone who beatified an anti-Semite?

You are trying to hold Luther responsible for something that happened 400 years later. This makes even less sense than trying to hold Darwin responsible for the reprehensible theory of social Darwinism which the same group of Nazis implemented through perversion of his theories.

I didn’t know any of that and I have been an off and on member of a Lutheran Church for 12 years or so.

I miss the little Baptist one I grew up in about 100 miles away out in the country. After a week of running the interstate grind and dragged into Saturday downtown circles of silly stuff (spouse), Sunday is about the only real downtime I get. Getting on the road is generally the last thing on my mind.
