Pope Francis promised "solutions" to the issue of priestly celibacy in an interview on Sunday that raised the possibility the Catholic Church could eventually lift a ban on married priests, but was quickly refuted by the Vatican

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis promised "solutions" to the issue of priestly celibacy in an interview on Sunday that raised the possibility the Catholic Church could eventually lift a ban on married priests, but was quickly refuted by the Vatican.

Interviewed by Italy's La Repubblica daily, Francis also condemned child sex abuse as a "leprosy" in the Church and cited his aides as saying that "the level of paedophilia in the Church is at two per cent".

"That two per cent includes priests and even bishops and cardinals," the pope was quoted as saying.

Asked whether priests might one day be allowed to marry, Francis pointed out that celibacy was instituted "900 years after Our Lord's death" and that clerics can marry in some Eastern Churches under Vatican tutelage.

OK. Here's something from a Catholic Church document: Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

I have serious doubts if that is a Catholic Church document. If this shallow interpretation is meant to mean anything, then a dead beat dad is in good grace with God. You know better, dig deeper.

>>I will never accept the premise that I need to prove anything sola scripturally<<

Scripture does teach us that if the apostles didn’t teach it then we are to consider it “accursed”.

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8-9<<

So would you please show us any infallible source for what the apostles taught other than found in scripture?

Mmm, no. God doesn't say "You hafta be married with a family" in order to oversee a flock.

The scripture has been posted countless times...Yet you apparently ignore it...Jerome even says the same thing...

Jesus wasn't married. Paul wasn't married.

Jesus wasn't providing teaching to his church (yet to be revealed)...And in view of the requirements for the church, likely Paul was widowed and had grown children...And what is obvious is that Paul was speaking to those out in the pews since there are instructions separately for the clergy...

So many people ignore that!

No one ignores that...They just look at it in context...Pauls says few will be able to follow Paul's idea...And of course Paul says it is not instruction from the Lord but Paul's own personal opinion...

Best way to deal with concern trolls is either to have a good laugh or put them on mental ignore.

Point one out then.

Define "troll".

Define "concern troll".

Spell your own name and plot a route to the nearest grocery store.

Odd question...

Why? Jesus and St. Paul commend the celibate state as preferable to the married state, to those who can accept it. I would think that this recommendation would be important to followers of Christ.

"Paul was not a bishop...None of the apostles were bishops..."

Bishop = episcopos = overseer: that's exactly what he was and what he did: he oersaw the churches; he supervised. He ordained Timothy (see 1 Timothy 4:14: "Neglect not the grace that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with imposition of hands of the priesthood.") and Titus by the laying on of hands to serve as his auxiliaries and follow as his successors. He exactly fits the bill.

You can also see this succession in the life of St. John the Evangelist, whose historic successors were St. Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, and St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons.

This is well attested historically. And it's immensely interesting: I'm just getting into Irenaeus an Polycarp now: oh, what great Men of God.

Are you kidding? It’s from Matthew 19 — a Catholic Church document. The person being quoted is Jesus Christ. The text is quite clear.

Leave her alone.

Why?

If I posted stupid stuff, would you then defend me for having done so?

Would you ask folks to leave me alone if they pointed it out?

I have heard, through the preaching over the years that the Apostolic TRADITION has it that the disciples of Jesus did have women along. They probably did most of the things women do.
And SOME of the 72 disciples Jesus sent out had to have left hearth and home.

However, if you don't believe in Apostolic Tradition and only Scripture, then I'm wasting my time.

The CATHOLIC CHURCH did collect and collate the New Testament. THEY decided which letters and "books" were to compiled as the New Testament. They had a large task, weaning out the good, bad, useful, unsure, etc.

Just imagine WHAT they DIDN'T include.

German priest and theologian Father Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church on January 3, 1521, when Pope Leo X issues the papal bull Decet Romanum Pontificem.
And HE, the first Protestant sure didn't compile the New Testament. He took the word of the Catholic Church as to what was Scripture.

But, as Protestants, you are certainly free to believe in whatever parts of the entire Catholic tradition that you want. There are some 41,000 different Protestant denominations so you do have many choices.

From Wikipedia: Note: This is not a complete list, but aims to provide a comprehensible overview of the diversity among denominations of Christianity. As there are reported to be approximately 41,000 Christian denominations (figure includes overlap between countries),many of which cannot be verified to be significant, only those denominations with Wikipedia articles will be listed in order to ensure that all entries on this list are notable and verifiable.

When will Catholics get over the idea that they own the scriptures?

>>"The husband of one wife" means that a priest cannot be twice married. The statement does not mean that the early Church required marriage.<<

Oh good grief. So they didn’t require marriage but they did require children and having ruled a household?

1 Timothy3:1This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

Seriously? Never married but with children was what they meant? Do Catholics even read scripture before posting?

It was his mother. My own mother become friends with the previous parish priest’s mother. She was wonderful and had raised a daugther and two sons, one who became my parish priest for 7 years and also became a friend.

Your mother also lost a good friend. My belated condolences to her and your parish priest.

It was Paul's own personal opinion and his practice. This is not proof that it was required --- and indeed the Catholic Church has never said that celibacy is intrinsically required for the priesthood. It's not dogma. This does show, though, that from the beginning it was recommended and preferred.

1 Corinthians 7:38
So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does better.

? You're right that it was not just spoken for the clergy. It was directed to everyone. Celibacy is a good way of life for the laity too ---- not all, of course, but those who are called to it as their vocation. Jesus speaks of those who live like eunuchs--- live single --- for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. And He honors it: He says, "Those who can accept this should accept it.” (Matthew 19:12)
