. . . . For centuries, the English have been taught that the late medieval Church was superstitious, corrupt, exploitative, and alien. Above all, we were told that King Henry VIII and the people of England despised its popish flummery and primitive rites. England was fed up to the back teeth with the ignorant mumbo-jumbo magicians of the foreign Church, and up and down the country Tudor people preferred plain-speaking, rational men like Wycliffe, Luther, and Calvin. Henry VIII achieved what all sane English and Welsh people had long desired an excuse to break away from an anachronistic subjugation to the ridiculous medieval strictures of the Church.
, . . But the last 30 years have seen a revolution in Reformation research. Leading scholars have started looking behind the pronouncements of the religious revolutions leaders Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley and beyond the parliamentary pronouncements and the great sermons. Instead, they have begun focusing on the records left by ordinary English people. This bottom up approach to history has undoubtedly been the most exciting development in historical research in the last 50 years. It has taken us away from what the rulers want us to know, and steered us closer towards what actually happened.

Where ever there is power there is corruption, I have no doubt that the reformers were just as corrupt as the leaders who were catholic and visa versa.
It matters not now because it is history, and if we have been misled by false historians how can we be sure that the ones exposing the false history is also not misleading us?
Catholics say they are the ones who brought us the Bible, if they are the ones who translated the Bible then why do they feel the need to add things in their religious rites that is not in the Bible which they say came from?
The same can be said about the protestants.
Either side will add to or take away from the bible to make their point.
If they really believed in what the bible says why do so many have to try to change every thing it says to try to make it say something or turn it around to say something else?
Both sides talk of being filled with the holy spirit and trying to act holier than the other.
If they actually believed what Jesus said they would at least try to treat others as they would like to be treated.
Catholics and atheists voted for Obama both times, Protestants voted against him, both times.
Catholics have only voted republican 4 to five times in our history, and protestants have only voted democrat 3 times.
Right now the number one concern for America is ending catholic immigration before it totally destroys us.
We know that converting Catholic Hispanics to Protestantism turns them more republican, but that won't save us from the Catholic voter.
It seems to me having an opinion that "I expect the Evangelicals to give in and reinterpret the Bible to match their members' preferences" falls short of the "You attacked all Evangelicals in your comment" by which you interpreted it. There are many denominations and sects that are tagged Evangelical. Since you won't identify the one(s) on whose behalf you are offended I am left to pick and choose.
Since Evangelical churches are more adaptive to change based on their members' preferences (my premise), they are particularly affected by how the young people view homosexual marraige. A late 2012 Lifeway Research Study showed that 73 percent of "born-again, evangelical, or fundamentalist" Christians believe homosexual conduct is sinful. I'll posit that 27 percent do not believe it is sinful and that the Fundamentalists, and "born-again" components of the poll have better numbers than the "evangelicals."
Whatever numbers you use, they are going downhill. Evangelical churches (take the United Methodists for example if you like) are more likely to break on this issue than Fundamentalists or Catholics.
Sorry, but I vaguely remember a survey that said over 50% of young Catholics believed same sex marriage was OK, not to mention a larger % of Catholic support abortion than all Evangelical combined, even those of evangelicals cults are against abortion at a greater % than are Catholics.
Makes sense knowing a majority of Catholics vote democrat election after election.
You seem so worried about Evangelicals, maybe you should worry about the plank in the eye of Catholicism before looking for a speck in eyes of Evangelicals.
According to a recent poll, 25 percent of Evangelical Protestants read the Bible daily, as do 20 percent of other Protestants. While that is bad and I can honestly say that I know for a fact that almost 80% of those who attend the church I attend read the Bible at least once a week, and 55% read it on a daily basis.
Compare that to a survey of Catholics that shows only 7% of Catholics read the Bible EVER!
Maybe if more Catholics read the Bible they might open their eyes to the inherent theology that is coming from their priests.
Another thing, Catholics claim Evangelicals worship the Bible instead of God.
That is so wrong.
We realize the Bible contains the Word of God and thus like the Bareans we study it daily to make sure that which is spoken from the pulpit is correct. I study my Bible intently along with using a Greek/Hebrew/English Linear to fact check everything I learn. You should see my personal Bible, it’s so marked up with notes and highlited passages it looks like a coloring book.
Every Catholics I met would never ever dare to mark their Bible with a pen or highlighter. As we know 93% are so afraid of the Bible they never even open it. How can they ever fact check what the priests are teaching if they never read it?
Maybe if more Catholics opened their Bible they would stop worshiping the ground the Pope walks on.
Again, I would advise you to get the beam out of the eyes of Catholics before worrying about the speck in the eyes of Evangelicals.
You sound worse than the person you are insulting. Wow!!!!
Then you haven’t read her comments over the last 15 years!
You may as well; because as sure as Hell you'll get blamed for it!
Looks like they have the holiday off.
Evidently; neither have you...
Wow, 3 posts in a row, to ME?
I’m all a-flutter.
Aw, how cute, a little lickspittle comes to her rescue. So sweet!
And the reason I just came back online to post is that I started reading the next chapter of the Robert Heinlein book that I've been working my way through, and the chapter starts with this sentence: "There have been a lot of changes around the Elsie."
It brought a smile to my face.
“You’re a suck, a suck and a lickspittle, that’s what you are,” said the pale man, his voice trembling with passion.
Bump for later
