I’m not surprised. Take away the financial incentive, and a large number of claims disappear. It’s been a propaganda gold mine for atheist proselytizers and the left, though.
Investigated many claims? And based on that he tell his boss 1/2 are false or exaggerated? Define exaggerated. Kid was only raped once, not twice? How many are exaggerated versus false?

No surprise. Unfortunately because of public opinion the only choice is to settle which in most eyes is admission and continues the vicious cycle.
While yes, I am sure there are fraudulent cases, please don’t close your hearts to all the victims there ARE. I have some association with SNAP, and there are wonderful grown men (and women) who can give you excruciating details and names as to their abuse at the hands of clergy (or other authorities). And though the Catholic Church gets the worst rap (I believe because some pedophiles CHOOSE to fake their calling and go Into the priesthood to avoid trappings of normal marriage and to have a higher than thou vantage point and access to young victims), there are pedophiles in the Protestant and in the Jewish — even the orthodox — clergy too.
To use your power, and abuse Gd’s, in order to destroy children is so evil, no house of worship should ever focus on some who want to get in on a scam when there are living, breathing, precious people who have been abused.
A defense attorney says half his clients are innocent. Shocker.

I think it’s been obvious for years that a good number of these claims have been bogus. Not all but many. We need to find ways to sift claims better and a whole lot quicker. Anyone can claim anything and it takes years to resolve. This is not a just system.
This is not to say that there aren't true victims, just that the public perception that any Catholic priest is almost certainly a gay pedophile is a media-manufactured falsehood.
Let us recall Father Benedict Groschel, who was vilified and booted from catholic media for suggesting that the anti-Catholic hysteria is a huge hoax.
If they had been reporterd to the police....as they should have been, this second evil wouldn’t occur.

If a priest is accused, he’s guilty. No need for a trial, just lynch him and get it done with.
If a priest isn’t accused, he hasn’t gotten caught yet. But that doesn’t mean he’s any less guilty.

Salvation. Thank you for the post. I’m not entirely surprised by this, especially remembering the ‘recovered memories’ scandal wherein local prosecutors went after children to get at day care center people they didn’t like.
Whenever the fascist democrat party is on the ropes in the South and the heartland, it pumps out anti-Catholic lies and there are always plenty of people who will lap up the media lies even though the will tell you they don't believe anything else the media has to say.
Fascists know that the worst thing that could happen to them is for Christians to join together and vote for good, Independent, Christian candidates and tell both parties to stuff it. Divide and conquer works for the fascists every single time and they have plenty of little helpers who claim to be conservative Christians but who would rather see the country collapse than to see Christians all working together to save the country.
Taking nothing away from the genuine victims, people are opportunistic in other areas of the law. And Dorothy Rabinowitz’ work has specifically covered that dynamic as it’s related to sexual abuse cases. Why would anybody think it’d be any different here?
