Tina and I went into the Imaging facility Monday and it all went smoothly.
After fasting for 8 hours Tina was injected with a radiated sucrose and was told to sit very still for an hour. After the hour was up she went into the PET scan machine where she had to lay very still again for 45 minutes while the machine captured all the various images. The hardest part seemed to be just staying still for a long time. The injection wasn't painful which was great. After it was done the technician said they got a very good & clear image of Tina's whole body.
The Consultation:
On Wednesday we met with the Doctor in Honolulu who will do the surgery. He went over the findings of the PET scan with us and also laid out the path forward. Tina has a malignant melanoma which will require a partial vulvectomy. The PET scan also picked up cancer on several lymph nodes in the groin area as well as something which was unclear on her breast.
One bright spot is that after the Doctor in Honolulu examined Tina he told us he had been concerned that the obvious tumor may have connected itself to the bone. After the examination he told us it was not attached and the surgery to remove it would be fairly straight forward.
The Surgery is set to take place on June 24th in Honolulu. We will need to travel back to Honolulu a day or so before that.
The surgery:
The Doctor will remove the obvious tumor and also remove the infected lymph nodes. He will also do a biopsy of the infected breast area to determine if that is a malignant tumor.
Point of concern: The Doctor thinks there is a chance that one of the lymph nodes in the groin area is very close to a major artery that feeds the leg and so it MAY be in a dangerous area. He doesnt want to remove that node if it is too close and there is a chance of perforating the artery.
Another point of concern: Even though the PET scan shows no sign of spread beyond the nodes there is a significant chance there is some spread which is not currently detectible. Please pray this is not the case.
Points for prayer:
1. Complete healing.
2. Easy smooth travel back to Honolulu.
3. Gods anointing on the doctor nurses and other support persons involved in the surgery.
4. The Doctor would be able to remove the entire obvious tumor and all of the infected lymph nodes without complication.
5. Peace, wisdom and perseverance as we pursue this difficult path together.
6. Tina will need to undergo Chemo therapy afterwards in the hopes of eliminating any other cancer cells that may be in her system. Pray that this may be effective.
