Bishop vs. Bishop: Lutheran Calls Out Catholic Over Marriage
Seattle Post-Intelligencer ^ | 10/16/12 | Joel Connolly

The retired presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Rt. Rev. Herbert Chilstrom, has delivered a stinging, public critique of his former Roman Catholic counterpart in Minnesota for aggressively campaigning for an anti-same sex marriage amendment on the November ballot.

“I recognize your authority in formulating positions for your own flock in Minnesota: That is one thing,” Chilstrom said in a letter to Roman Catholic Archbishop John Nienstedt, published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

“But for you and others to campaign for an amendment that imposes your stance on all citizens in Minnesota — including other Christians, believers of other faith groups and unbelievers — it is overstepping your bounds.”

Minnesota is one of four states voting on marriage this November. Washington, Maryland and Maine will cast ballots on whether to approve marriage equality. In Minnesota, Nienstedt has put $650,000 in church money into promoting the state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.

satan must be laughing his head off.

Biblically only a man and a woman can marry. Men are not supposed to have intimate relations with anyone who is not their wife, not with men, not with children not with women who are not their wives. Women are not supposed to have intimate relations with anyone not their husband, not with men, not with children, not with other women.

If the world obeyed this COMMANDMENT FROM GOD, there would be a lot less pain in the world.

The retired presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America . . .

Yeah, it is so easy to take cheap shots at a faith which has been around for roughly 2000 years and still manages to retain about 68% of their members.

Give the ELCA another generation and I'll bet they won't even be retaining 50%.

The toughest thing for me about leaving was some of the nice people and the social networks I left behind. This is the only thing which keeps most of their remaining congregants in the pews.

The thing I miss the least is the left-wing gospel and false doctrines as preached by the jerks in leadership positions.

Apparently, the right to the public expression of religious opinions is reserved to heretics.

Marriage is NOT a privage issue.

Marriage is a PUBLIC issue.

Homosexuals want to impose their view of recreational sex as the MANDATORY PUBLIC VIEW.

It is not an equal issuee. It is NOT a civil rights issue.

It is not “equality” as the propagandists would hold.

So it’s “overstepping” for the Catholic bishop to “campaign for an amendment that imposes his stance on all citizens in Minnesota,” but it’s perfectly ok for the Lutheran tool to advocate for a revision to an insitution that goes back thousands of years and also imposes HIS stance on all citizens of Minnesota ...

Must be liberal “logic” at work.

That is precisely the view from the Left. If you do not agree with them, they intend to hound you out of the public arena.

these are NOT equal bishops.

This is very goebles of him.

it is not a 50/50 debate.

The disgraced retired lutheran homosexual population is very tiny compared to the catholic church population.

As usual in these stories, the person described as “Lutheran” is really not. He’s ELCA.

I feel sorry for Lutherans and, for my feeling that way, I praise the Lord and thank my Church.

Chilstrom could care less about what the Bible has to say. He gets his opinions from the number of dollars in the plate.

No. Archbishop John Nienstedt was not “overstepping his bounds,” as was so rudely stated by Rt. Rev. Herbert Chilstrom.

Indeed, it is Archbishop Nienstedt’s duty to urge the people of his state to respect traditional marriage. Rev. Chilstrom has every right to courteously state his own opinion, but he needs to recognize that many fine Americans strongly, strongly disagree.

And I'm not Roman Catholic or Lutheran, by the way.

Marin Luthor would be puking.

This Marxist revisionism of religions where Evil is Good is absurd. The sexist “marriage” idea is really creepy and denies children their natural right of a mother and father. It destroys the inherent moral Duty in all mankind to raise their own offspring. What a joke-—a “religion” which destroys Natural Rights and Duties—the protection of these Rights are the only reason for formation of governments.

Thank God, the Catholics haven’t capitulated to the irrational, evil ideology of Satanists although they have been infiltrated by many progressives.

These Lutherans are trying to normalize this:

“I recognize your authority in formulating positions for your own flock in Minnesota: That is one thing...”

That’s pretty big of him. Glad he cleared that up right from the start.

must be dementia-- this retired Rt.Rev. Herbert Chilstrom clearly is NOT a Christian Nor a Patriotic American who understands American Law. "Certainly no legislation can be supposed more wholesome and necessary in the founding of a free self governing commonwealth... than that which seeks to establish it on the basis of the idea of the family as consisting of and springing from the union for life of one man and one woman in the Holy estate of matrimony..." US Supreme Court 1885 Murphy v. Ramsey and Others.as true today as then easy to reconcile with Moses (Gen.1: &2; Jesus of Nazareth Matthew 5: and 19: ; and the Apostle Paul 1 Cor. 6: Where in the Christian Bible is same sex "marriage" advocated or advanced as anything other than sinning before the Lord... an abomination worthy of death... the wickedness that led to the utter destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah?Yet this retired "Evangelical" ? advocates for fornication?

The apostate ELCA bishop (is there any other kind of ELCA bishop these days?) gets a well-deserved comeuppance.

The retired bishop's successors are resolutely, defiantly carrying on his legacy of apostasy
