Faculty members say comments demonstrate ignorance and insensitivity
Some faculty members at the University of Notre Dame are calling on Peoria Bishop Daniel Jenky to renounce statements he made during a controversial April 14 homily or resign from the schools Board of Fellows.
More than 90 faculty members have so far signed the letter, which was released Monday to the Notre Dame student newspaper, according to John Duffy, an English professor at the university.
Jenky, during his homily, analogized the political actions of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin to those of President Obama.
Bishop Jenkys comments demonstrate ignorance of history, insensitivity to victims of genocide, and absence of judgment, the letter states.
Jenky is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and serves on the schools 12-member Board of Fellows.
The board is the highest governing body at the university. Members are charged with electing trustees, determining how much power they might have, approving property sales, adopting bylaws and ensuring the institution is committed to Catholic education, among other things.
The letter does speak for itself and indicates there is a great deal of consternation, which is a mild word, said Donald Sniegowski, professor emeritus of English at Notre Dame.
The Catholic Diocese of Peoria felt the faculty members took Jenkys comments out of context.
Bishop Jenky has received this news with surprise, said James Kruse, vicar general of the Diocese of Peoria in a release responding to the letter. They must have not actually heard or read what was said and only what people have misquoted

The mere presence of destructive, no-talent, Godless Communists at a Catholic University, is FAR more controversial than the good Father’s homily.
If you have a bunch of faculty members opposed, you have to believe that Jenky’s remarks were probably spot on!
Jenky should give the standard leftist apology with a Carney preamble for a few days beforehand.....
1) “It’s preposterous to think Hitler and Stalin are like Obama.”
2) “I’m sorry if anyone was offended, but you know, SOMEONE had to say this for the good of the country and apple pie everywhere.”
Notre Dame and Georgetown are in intense competition to become the most athiest university.
Now that the Catholic Church has decided to confront the Cretin-in-Chief, they should also eject these two jokes of higher education. No one needs them anymore.
And given what I just read, their degrees are worth just about as much as an Obama speech.
I guess wanting to make it legal to let babies die of neglect after a botched abortion puts him only in the minor leagues.
Isn’t this something? A university, where they probably have at least one or two world history texts, can’t see what the muslim Kenyan is doing to our country, and can’t see why it’s wrong. So they go after a bishop who criticizes Obummer!
Of course, this is the same Catholic college that invited and drooled all over the White House interloper who firmly believes that it’s permissible to slaughter unborn and newly born babies as if they were garbage.
Everyone of those POSs who signed this letter should be immediately fired and the Church should step in and excommunicate the bunch of them.
they just can’t handle the truth that’s all. Evil really hates truth, ya know. Notre Dame lost all credibility with me when they allowed Obama on their campus...and then Georgetown covered their crosses (FOR ETERNAL SHAME!!!)
All I know is, when I was an elementary student, one of my nuns instructed us to “Choose now who you will serve for eternity, because you cannot choose 2 masters.” And it stuck with me. I’m choosing Jesus, just like the good Bishop. Those other faculty members who are opposing him will be part of that goat gang that goes off to get roasted for eternity...
They should be not only apologizing, but begging forgiveness, for covering up the statue of Jesus when obama visited. I have never have heard their explanation of why they did this.
If he had made disparaging remarks about W, they’d be giving him a Profile In Courage award.
I will continue to root for whoever is playing against the Yankees and Notre Dame.
Just where in the Catholic education is there anything about ripping the arms, legs, torsos, etc., off unborn babies; or cracking their heads like walnuts; or putting them in a pan in a closet to die of exposure; or having newborns tossed into medical waste bins to die similarly?
And then to welcome this monster to the Catholic campus to demand they take down the cross behind him and then let him open his filthy mouth is disgusting. What the hell kind of jackasses are these faculty members.
Liberal!
Go Spartans!
His Excellency should resign by giving a blistering speech excoriating Notre Dame’s march towards secularism, starting with the Land O’Lakes agreement, to Cuomo’s graduation address’ introduction of the political doctrine of “personally opposed”, to the recent granting of an honorary degree to Diocletian and the subsequent persecution of those protesting same.
He should conclude that no serious Catholic parent should send their children to that university, nor should alumni in good faith make donations to same.
Exactly,, they have never been more ripe for a counterattack.
Looks like the U.S. congress isn't the only group riddled with communists.
He probably made some spot-on points that the faculty don't know how to counter so, in typical leftist fashion, they go for the ad hominem attack.
I would just laugh at them. What are they going to do? Surrender their tenure in protest? Teach an extra class? Screw them and the horse they rode in on...
