An email sent out to the Crystal Cathedral's congregation requested meals for founder Robert Schuller's wife, Arvella, who is sick with pneumonia. Crystal Cathderal Ministries, a glass-walled Orange County church known for its "Hour of Power" broadcasts, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 18. The Schullers, church administrators, have come under fire after court documents revealed they may have taken nearly $10 million from the church's endowment funds.
The email sent by Pastor Jim Kok asked parishioners not to send cards, because church staff and the Schullers want to keep her illness "under the radar."
"However, they would appreciate meals over the next three to four weeks," the email states, reported The Orange County Register. "They are to be sent to the church in order to be transported to Arvella. The limo drivers could pick up the dinners or meet in the Tower Lobby around 4:30 p.m."
Many parishioners are outraged over the email considering the cathedral's bankruptcy and the Schuller's involvement.
"These are millionaires who have limos and chauffeurs," an outraged member, Bob Canfied, 73, told The Orange County Register. "Why in God's name would they want the congregants to deliver meals? It's ludicrous."

You are 100 percent correct. But most people don't beg for it. It is supposed to be voluntarily and not requested by the family. It is kinda tacky at best especially since it is only pneumonia. I mean if it was death bed thing I might understand more.

I have so often said that one of the church’s problem is due to the pastors no longer using fire and brimstone to warn their parishioners about the consequences of their misgivings..
There is, after all, punishment for unforgiven sin. And until a person dies to his/her sinself, he/she cannot be forgiven. He/she also must forgive others for their offenses to receive forgiveness from the Lord. Confession to Him is impertative.
God is great, and He does answer prayer, but Jesus does not like a lukewarm believer.
I’m wondering why Mr. Schuller can’t cook up some chicken soup for the ailing Mrs. Schuller.

This is true, but usually one actually delivers the meals, not drops them off to be picked up by the limo driver - as if you’re good enough to cook, but not come by the house.
If you’re still paying for a limo, you’ve got money to whip up some ramen and chicken at home. I don’t blame the congregation for being ticked off.

They said 3 to 4 weeks and then she will be better. I do understand that some people have issues with that sickness but it does not seem to be the case with her.

Were these same parishioners outraged when the church paid $50,000 for camels at their Christmas program, last year? They’ve couldn’t pay that debt. It’s in the bankruptcy filing.

I don’t think it’s so bad either. Schuller is old and so is his wife. Buying take-out may not have occurred to him. Providing meals for the sick is a Christian tradition of service. Also, having people deliver meals may not have been Schuller’s idea. It may have been the associate pastor’s idea as a way to show support and concern.
I have wondered lately (especially the last year or so) if there isn’t a concerted effort on the part of rat trolls and operatives to post as many “prayer” and “religion” threads as possible in order to paint Free Republic as an evangelical site first and a political discussion site second. The purpose of this would be to chase away people who are mostly interested in conservative political discussion.
Sometimes I pull up the site and half the threads are of the “religion” variety. Other topics get squeezed out, or pushed down.
I happen to be a genuine Christian, but that’s my own business. I come to FR primarily for lively discussion and conservative activism about political breaking news and election/campaign discussions, etc., not religion.
Why curse the Reformation? The Reformation is not to blame for what Robert Schuller and his church have done. They are. The Protestant reformers preached the true Gospel: salvation by grace through faith; the virgin birth; Christ’s blood atonement; the fact that Jesus is both divine and human; and Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and return. They preached about the resurrection and judgment of believers and unbelievers, Heaven and Hell, holiness, the priesthood of the believer, etc. They didn’t preach tolerance and “positive Christianity,” as Robert Schuller has done and still does. In fact, they wouldn’t be allowed to preach in his church, because their preaching would offend a lot of people and make them feel uncomfortable.
