Just over a week after ending its dont ask, dont tell policy, the Pentagon has released new guidelines permitting military chaplains to perform same-sex marriages in states where gay marriage is legal.
A military chaplain may participate in or officiate any private ceremony, whether on or off a military installation, provided that the ceremony is not prohibited by applicable state and local law, a memo released Friday from Under Secretary of Defense Clifford Stanley read.
Further a chaplain is not required to participate in or officiate a private ceremony if doing so would be in variance with the tenets of his or her religion.
The policy allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly went into effect on September 20, much to the chagrin of social conservatives who fear it could be a surreptitious way to normalize, and then legalize, gay marriage nationwide. This most recent decision has predictably roiled those already opposed to the repeal of dont ask, dont tell.
The Pentagon has clearly overstepped its bounds by declaring that military chaplains can perform same-sex marriages, said Penny Nance, CEO of the conservative Concerned Women for America.
As part of the federal government, Nance told The Daily Caller, the Department of Defense must abide by federal law including the Defense of Marriage Act, which permits marriage only between one man and one woman. The Defense of Marriage Act was passed by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.
Gay marriage advocates cheered the Pentagon memo as a victory for equality.
Now that Dont Ask, Dont Tell is gone, there is nothing prohibiting chaplains whose denominations do not discriminate from treating same-sex couples equally in accordance with state and local laws, said Alex Nicholson, executive director for the gay advocacy group Servicemembers United.
There are many chaplains in the military who simply do not believe that gay and lesbian servicemembers are second-class citizens, he said, and those chaplains should have the freedom to practice their religion as they see fit, including officiating at ceremonies that their denominations recognize.
Just wait. The lawsuits, intimidation and harassment against any service member who isn’t fully on board will begin in about a month. Maybe less.
How about marrying a cat to a dog?
Insanity in the Pentagon.
Yeah, that business about a chaplain not having to do things that are against his beliefs will last about a month or two. Then the lavender mafia will lower the boom and they’ll be forced to marry homosexuals whether they like it or not. Remember: Chaplains are military officers under the direction of the president, who is almost certainly a closet case, so good luck with that. I wouldn’t join the Army today if you put a gun to my head.
That’s next year. Don’t get ahead of the program...
Not sure if they’ll let the Mormons do it but as for the Moslems? No problem. As long as you’re either homosexual or Islamic, the sky’s the limit in today’s military. If you’re Christian and/or patriotic, you’re persona non grata.
May??? or MUST!!!
May now, must in the near future. Guarantee it!
This is going to be a huge money pot for lawyers, an open stage for drama queens and the single greatest defeat for our military and The United States of America.
But I thought the Left said that President Bush had “privatized” the military. What happened to that meme?
They will not be forced to do something against their moral beliefs - they will merely be deemed "unsuitable" for the job and let go - just like the run-of-the-mill GI who won't toe the line.
I'm glad I retired before it got this bad - I work with the Military and many are sick by it - but far too many have no issues. It's bad that the Nation has been emasculated - it's scary that the Military is following suit.
The old Commie dialectic at play here. The “community Organizer” Barry Soetoro aka Barak Hussein Obama II Put the word out to his toy soldiers in the Pentagon that they needed to act on this so he could pressure those in Congress reluctant to repeal DOMA. And like good soldiers they followed the orders of the weakest link in the chain of command without question. If he ordered them to drop trow and sodomize each other to celebrate repeal of DADT -they would. And some may grit their teeth and repeat the LIE that they must follow orders and hold on for the next CINC to make it right. Problem is just like Hitler—when you empower EVIL it allows them to do a h-— of a lot more damage than when EVIL is met with resistance. This fundamental change in the Chaplains Orders tracks right back to the anti-American /pinko Communist that black agitator inside the white washingmachine.O Bummer.
The honor courage and comittment "values" seem all but forgotten whenever there is political pandering to do.
Lord help you if you get caught saying something un-PC by the wrong person....the meme is "don't be the first." Nobody wants to be the first sheep to the slaughterhouse.
Welcoming these types into the military is like welcoming dysentary to your digestive system.

Shoving the homo agenda in the military - another highly destructive "Fast and Furious".
What I want to know is why the gutless Rs in Congress didn’t de-fund this. Why they are silent. Sickening. Expert testimony in Congress told them why homos in the military is extremely destructive.

this insane policy of allowing homosexuals to be openly serving has to the be the first thing overturned and dealt with when we get power back from these lunatics.
This has created lawsuits from homo’s who were told to get out of the military it is now making chaplains to marry these poeple and now they will leave the military move to say my state and then say they’re married.
When my state tells them they are not married they will say they can fight and die for the country but cannot be married.
This is a way t get around DOMA and the GOP needs AND BETTER INFORM THE PUBLIC AND FIGHT THIS RIGHT NOW
NO MORE COWARDLY ACTIONS FROM THE GOP.
Every state which has voted on marriage says no, the majority of folks do not want the homo agenda and therefore we can pressure the Dems too.
They want to keep their seats then vote against this policy .
