Being a faithful Catholic doesn’t mean you have to be a joyless one.
New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan knows that. When Archbishop Dolan was installed to his post in the Big Apple, an enterprising reporter asked the newcomer if there was anything he would like to condemn. Archbishop Dolan responded in the affirmative.
“I condemn instant mashed potatoes and light beer,” he deadpanned.
A few years ago, when Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl visited a Catholic bookstore, the owner approached him and said, “Oh! You’re looking for a book, Father. You must be a Jesuit!”
“No,” Cardinal Wuerl replied, “but I’m literate.”
Back when Blessed Pope John XXIII enjoyed making surprise visits to Catholic institutions in Rome, he once stopped at a hospital run by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit. The superior of the religious community ran up to the Holy Father and announced that she was “the superior of the Holy Spirit.”
Without skipping a beat, the pope countered with: “Well, you outrank me. I’m only the vicar of Christ!”
Those were just a few of many stories of faith and good humor shared by Jesuit Father James Martin during last night’s Ignatian Day Lecture at St. Ignatius in Baltimore. The Jesuit priest, a bestselling author and culture editor of America Magazine, spoke on the important role of humor in living a spiritual life.
Well-known for his amazingly funny appearances on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, Father Martin is traveling the country to spread a message that might be summed up in two words: “Lighten up.”

Of course God wants us to laugh but that doesn’t mean he wants us to laugh at mean spirited vicious attacks.
spreading a few laughs is good for the soul. Jesus supped with a lot of nasty sinners, and I’ll bet he could crack a few jokes along the way...jmho
Who knows? Maybe one day Colbert will break up laughing and experience a sudden conversion.
Yes, it is certainly possible to be a good Catholic and enjoy humor. Even at tonight’s Mass, with a bid flying around inside, the Deacon remarked that the Holy Spirit had entered the Church.
Having spent 8 years being educated by Jesuit priests and still keeping company with them, I can certainly testify about the joy and mirth of well-grounded faith.
That said, I wouldn’t mind if more than a handful of Jesuits would publically defend that faith, as was their original mission. If they want to use humor in their missionary efforts, more power to them!
God does have a sense of humor... after all, he created Darwin, didn’t he :>)
You’re lucky - all the Jesuits that make it up here to NH - spend their time preaching social ‘justice’ and why Catholics shouldn’t be afraid to embrace ‘hope’ and work for ‘change’ - hint! hint!

Ironically I had the epiphany that I was conservative politically when I was 14 just outside the classroom of one of the more liberal young priests. Don’t get me wrong, he is a dedicated missionary and beloved, but still, a liberal.
Anyway, it was the 1980 election season and outside his classroom he had a poster. It showed a photo of an F-14 and the cost ($15 Million?). Below it was a laundry list of items that could be purchased with that money complete with photos of hungry kids and homeless families.
I recalled Ronald Reagan, during the campaign, stating that it was possible to produce both guns and butter. That America had the means and the willpower and how strongly he believed that. I believed Ronald Reagan and was so happy that I could vote for him in 1984.
God does have a sense of humor. He created humans didn’t He?
Their original mission was to defend the faith and obey the Pope. Their mission now is to oppose American capitalism and defy the Pope.
