Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and United Nations Foundation Announce $45 Million Campaign to Fight Malaria

Lutheran World Relief (LWR), The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and the United Nations Foundation announced on Monday an unprecedented partnership to mobilize Lutherans in the United States in the fight against malaria in Africa.

The campaign, called the Lutheran Malaria Initiative (LMI), aims to raise $45 million to contribute toward the global goal of eliminating malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. Malaria, a preventable and treatable disease, continues to devastate communities and perpetuate a cycle of poverty. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 1 million people die of malaria each year and every 45 seconds a child dies in Africa. In many communities where LWR and the LCMS work, extreme poverty creates conditions that allow malaria to take hold and spread with deadly consequence.

If it does not include the support and use of DDT, I will not participate.

AAMoF, I will ^discourage^ my parish to contribute to this effort without the unqualified acceptance of DDT as a viable mosquito vector is agreed to.

I think I’ll send a note to Matt...

If I remember correctly, ELCA had been committed to the Lutheran Malaria Initiative, but had to withdraw. Apparently, they had other priorities after CWA09.

My son just came home from a small Lutheran camp, They had a UN green planet program, which was not explain ahead of time.

Seemed like much propaganda. Captain Planet was played numerous times. Much talk about recycling, malaria.

Ted Turner, Soros and Bill Gates are some of the program backers.

The kids were told to give up your ideas for yourself for the greater good of the group.

$45 million would buy a lot of DDT and actually accomplish something. Anything else is spitting in the wind.

Rachel Carson’ book caused millions of deaths. What’s the real reason they don’t they want to us DDT which is actually very safe?

Reasonable and judicious use of DDT for mosquito control in specific and limited locations could have spared millions of people from death caused by malaria without any significant harm to fish eating raptors. The mindless over-reaction of a total ban on the use of DDT for insect control has reduced us to distributing mosquito nets. How cost effective is this defensive tactic in limiting malarial infections and deaths, as compared with a rational use of knowledge gained through the science of chemistry? Possibly someone has attempted to estimate this.

Meanwhile, I suppose the ELCA will double its donations to fund abortions and teach fisting in Africa.
