US Bishops: NY Is Abandoning the Common Good
WASHINGTON, D.C., JUNE 28, 2011 (Zenit.org).- "Abandonment of the common good" is how Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, described the New York State Legislature's decision to pass the Marriage Equality Act.
Bishop Cordileone expressed his "grave disappointment" regarding the bill that was passed with a 33-29 vote Friday, four days after the legislative session was already to have ended.
"Marriage, the union of a man and a woman, forms the foundation of social well-being by promoting love and respect between the two most fundamental representatives of the human community," Bishop Cordileone said in a statement released Tuesday by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Citing the importance of children being cared for by both their mother and father, he cautioned that "making marriage law indifferent to the absence of either sex creates an institutional and cultural crisis with generational ramifications yet to be seen."
The prelate noted the "exceptive language" to protect religious organizations, but warned that the "actual legal effect will have to be scrutinized."

It ain’t just New York.
MA, VT, NH, and probably several others I can’t remember, all fell before NY.
It’s the whole NATION that has abandoned support for the family as God established it.

How about “abandoning the Bible”, hence, “abandoning God”?

Its the whole NATION that has abandoned support for the family as God established it. Well, I haven't abandoned it, and I'm sure you haven't. Our government has, to a certain extent, abandoned it. In the United States, the government does not play a very large role in most people's day-to-day lives. We don't have a state-sponsored religion (I know, you can make the case that Liberalism or Envirnomentalism is a religon) so anyone is free to keep the government at arm's length. At least for now.
I'm not saying the situation isn't bad, or depressing. I'm just looking for light, and trying to see things in perspective.

The liberals have abandoned it, not the rest of us.
It will be interesting to see what happens with homosexual marriage. A few more “blue” states may pass such laws in the next few years, but, the vast majority of the country is still going to define marriage in the traditional manner.
That is, unless, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling imposes homosexual marriage on all 50 states.
The president told his LGBT gathering the other day that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. But he didn’t say why. Does the president oppose defining marriage? He said previously he believes marriage is a man and a woman, and as a Christian, that God was in the mix.
The president has also said his views are “evolving”.
Why does evolution of views always have to be in the liberal direction? Why can’t views evolve the other way? Why can’t someone say that, they thought about the idea of giving marriage rights to same-sex couples, but they concluded that marriage should remain a man and a woman? Why will nobody ever say their views evolved that way????

And that's just hunky-dory with FReepers who think communities ought not to be allowed to ban drugs, prohibit the sale of certain video games to minors, etc.

Why does evolution of views always have to be in the liberal direction? Why cant views evolve the other way? Why cant someone say that, they thought about the idea of giving marriage rights to same-sex couples, but they concluded that marriage should remain a man and a woman? Why will nobody ever say their views evolved that way???? Well, I assume that's because of very considerable financial support given by homosexual organizations to candidates who are willing to aid them in their quest to force acceptance of their repellent lifestyle by the culture at large, which they are compelled to seek in order to assuage deep-seated feelings of angst and discomfort they experience as a result of what's left of their consciences.
Obama is, I assume, trying to walk the fine line. Saying what he thinks he can get away with saying to homosexuals in order to keep them from closing their checkbooks, and yet not going so far as to cause a hit to his support among A-A voters, many of whom are not too thrilled with the constant attempts by homosexuals to draw parallels between their desire for legitimacy and the civil rights movement.

Those who know something about the State Constitution may want to look into it, but as far as I know New York as a state never did acknowledge God or the Bible. They still ought to acknowledge Natural Law, (cf. Romans 2:15) which, together with Scriptural Law, has the same Author.
To: Mrs. Don-o
Per the NY State Constitution
- God: 1 time -- Preamble
- Bible: 0
- Religion: 1 time -- Equal Protection
- Firearms: 0
- Right To Bare Arms: 0
- 'Militia': 1 time -- Article XII (State controlled)
- Self Defense: 0
- Marriage: 6 times -- all regarding divorce
- TAXES: 43 Times
New York State is home to Satan's Spawn

Opinions on abortion have trended the the other way. Arizona failed to pass a pro-marriage amendment, then passed it a few years later. Don’t know if it would pass now, though.
The nature of marriage can’t be changed by men. Some faiths aren’t ever going to change on marriage, and will just have to take the punishment from the statist and homosexualists for not swallowing the state’s ever changing definition of marriage.

Geez. That’s disgusting. I don’t suppose it mentions the Fundamental Right to Life, either -— one of the Big Three (+Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness) upon which this nation was founded — Under God!

*** Geez. Thats disgusting. I dont suppose it mentions the Fundamental Right to Life, either - one of the Big Three (+Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness) upon which this nation was founded Under God! *** Yes it is disgusting. The entire NY State 'constitution' is disgusting.
And no there are no Fundamental Rights like you mentioned. Their Bill of Rights section is a joke - like the entire 'thing' is. After the Preamble where God is mentioned - once, it reads more like a contract for buying a Used Car than any 'constitution' -- even that abomination devised by the EU.
an aside: In 2009 'my' Gov here in IL, Quinn - who replaced Blago, was pushing and pushing for a Constitutional Convention to rewrite Illinois' existing one. Thankfully it was on the 2010 Ballot and was defeated by a huge majority. Even Dem and 'independents' knew that with the IL State Gubmint completely under the Dems boot heel, any new one would have resembled that of the USSR. Or New York State.
(This governor is dumber than Blago and Obama combined, and that's REALLY dumb.)

It's far worse than you know. This is not about NY. This is now about the entire US. The gays plan to challenge DOMA at the level of the Supreme Court.

What you say has a lot of implications.
Prostitution rings, meth houses, etc. all oppose the common good.

That says a lot about New York. I wonder how other state constitutions line up.
Very interesting analysis....Thanks.
