Church rejects Mormon couple as Cub leaders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In shopping around for a Cub Scout program for their two sons, ages 6 and 8, Jeremy and Jodi Stokes decided on the one at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, N.C.

The Stokeses, also of Matthews, weren't members of the evangelical megachurch, but they had many friends who were. And unlike the Cub Scout pack at their own church, which doesn't have a program for 6-year-old Tiger Scouts, Christ Covenant's was big enough to accommodate both of their boys.

The couple even signed up to be Scout leaders when they discovered the church needed adult help. And when the Scouting officials at Christ Covenant found out Jeremy Stokes was an Eagle Scout, they were thrilled.

So why did Christ Covenant reject the Stokeses' application to be Scout leaders?

Because they're Mormons. And, therefore, not real Christians, church officials told the couple.

"I can't believe they had the audacity to say, 'You can't be leaders, but we want your boys,' " Jodi Stokes said. "Are you kidding me?"

The Rev. Gabe Sylvia, Christ Covenant's staff liaison to the Scouting program, confirmed the Stokeses' account. He called them to apologize but defends the church's decision.

"When it became clear that they were Mormons, they could not become leaders in our pack. Mormonism is not consistent with historical Christianity," he said.

That view — that Mormons, whose church is formally titled the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are not Christians — is shared by other Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Christian churches, as well.

"It was so offensive," said Jodi Stokes, who was raised Catholic, then became a Mormon. "I have a picture of Jesus in my living room."

Members of the Salt Lake City-based church believe salvation is possible because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But significant theological differences separate Mormons from most Christian churches.

The LDS church treats as holy scripture the Book of Mormon, which isn't recognized by other churches, but which it believes was divinely revealed to Joseph Smith in the 1820s.

Mormons also disavow belief in the core Christian doctrine of the Trinity — that the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one — instead believing the three to be individuals united in a single purpose.

Mormons believe the original Christian church vanished 100 years after Jesus' death and resurrection. The authentic church, they believe, was restored by Smith.

Speaking of Presbyterians; do you know that there is not a single (or married) MORMON around that knows what JS alledgedly learned was UNTRUE about PRESBYTERIANism in his day?

Have you ever studied how some Amish celebrate mass? At homes - which change weekly. They don’t have churches. AND, they don’t wear the costumes that many “religious” men do. They don’t have figureheads whose rings are kissed, nor leaders who receive the prayers despised by the iconoclasts.

My answer to you is same for religion as it is for politics: EGO and Money. Those two factors will corrupt ANY organization. What Machiavelli wrote in “The Prince” was quite true. Egos and money has corrupted even our government, the best ever designed, despite our MC’s oath to preserve and protect the Constitution.

The sad thing is that we can deal or not with any church we desire. But we are chained to our government.

I am very active in the latter......and that activity is growing steadily.

We will soon answer to God - and this argument will be settled.

theology degrees from what/where?

I know MANY people whose knowledge of the Bible is incredible. Most are Baptist, a couple of Mormons and several self-identified Christians (Catholics are the least knowledgeable)....yet NOT ONE had a theology degree.

So here we will differ. I submit that the lack of a degree is no proof that a person is not well educated in theology.

Lets see if you bite the bait.

“I know MANY people whose knowledge of the Bible is incredible. ...a couple of Mormons”

I’ve yet to meet ONE mormon who knows what the Bible teaches - or how to do language and context and cultural meanings, as a start. As such, they focus on reading into the Bible what they brought with them when they approached it.

They do find lots of similar words found in the mormonic teaching and then read them back into the Bible...

See & Say, the Mormon Way!

LOL...

You accuse me of misrepresentation, meaning you called me a liar, and like everything you post can't back it up and refuse to even try instead playing little school yard games.

Your cowardice and lack of veracity noted.

So where does that leave you in all of this...

Well you are a textbook "defender" of the Latter Day Saints, at least you have that going for you.

Thanks for showing that empty hand again and again. You do us proud.

(Catholics are the least knowledgeable)....

Hum...

There has not been really any notable Catholic participation on this thread nor any mention of the Catholic Church and it hasn't figured in the story line at all.

Seems one who is Intolerant of Intolerance could have written that same response without that statement added...

I love how these threads move from philosophical to personal in an instant.

When I was in Catholic School, we never studied the bible, we studied catechism. Therefore, mine was an observation (not an attack) based on YEARS of personal experience. What is intolerant about that?

What I did was to group several religions together to chum some readers into more attacks on other religions. They selected the one that I thought they would, bit hard, and then were landed. (despite my warning)

And yes, this is fun. B’s are so predictable.

By the way, the personal responses I’m getting are mostly complimentary and hilarious. The abusive ones I’m saving.

There’s quite an audience for this banter!

Just like politics, there’s money involved; so, the leaders must keep their followers as followers.

Take a guess how much $$$ in property, and other assets LDS, Inc. has?

Ummm...the Amish don’t ‘celebrate Mass’, they have services.

Mass is a specific TYPE of service.

Every Mormon I know (like me) who started to do that ended up leaving the Mormon church. The LDS do not encourage language work or serious Biblical studies.

Golly. I guess it’s a good thing I don’t have a care in the world what you think. Does it annoy you that you can’t get me riled like you so desire?

You keep posting your obnoxious propaganda with your cronies and I’ll keep supplying the lurkers with a source for the truth. Same old same old. See ya! =-)
