The Christian world is losing population because of a declining birthrate. The US is also losing population but that fact is being hidden by the large amount of immigration into this country. I am a mother of two daughters in their thirties. One is married and the other is single. My daughters and I have had a discussion about the state of marriage and family among young people of my daughters' generation. Many thirty somethings are having a hard time finding someone to marry and settle down with. In other generations young people of this age would have been married and had children by this age. It is very concerning.
This is a problem that has been going on in Europe as well for some time. People don't seem to want to commit and if they do marry they often divorce.
I only had two children like most people who had children in the 1970's but now I wish that I had more. If I knew that we would be facing this demographic problem I would have had at least one more. I think abortion and the feminist emphasis on career and "self fullfilment" has had an something to do with the shrinking of our demographics as well. Is there anyone else who is concerned about this?
No responsibility, no commitment, sex without love = no children.
I echo your sentiments. I am so thankful for my five children. Yes, it wasn’t always easy — especially when my husband died and they were ages 9-19. But they are all in their early forties and late thirties and all doing well.

Mark Steyn wrote a book about the more egregious case of Europe’s demographics. He was dismissed by the Europeans a few years back, if I recall correctly, but now, well, the numbers are what they are.
Part of the problem is the socialist state in Europe fosters attitudes not conducive to having children. Neither the German Chancellor nor her minister for families (also female) have children themselves.
In the US the problem is not as profound, but it could become that way here as well if we continue the socialization path Obama has placed us on.
The muslims and animist don’t have to fire a shot in Israel or USA they will outnumber us shortly and will pull a South Africa on Israel much sooner.
Abortion did tremendous damage to my generation. Millions of people in my genertation were executed for the sake of convenience.
Do people that you know have any awareness of this problem? I live in Massachusetts which is not a very aware state but I was wondering if people in some other parts of the country are more aware of this problem and are perhaps talking about it.
A hundred years ago a decent man had a very hard time getting much sex unless he was married. Prostitutes transmitted diseases that were untreatable and fatal, much like AIDS, but far more frequent. Unless a man was rich, he usually had to live in a rented room. Life was pretty gloomy for a bachelor.
Today, a man can enjoy a pleasant lifestyle and have all the sex he wants with middle-class women who are also happy to cook and clean for him in hopes he’ll fall in love and want to get married. No such luck, ladies. Men have little motivation to get married in these circumstances. And why should they, when the Family Law court is just going to take half their income and assets and deprive them of their children?
I would have had at least one more child, also. Maybe 2 or 3 more. I do see some young couples having more than just 2 now, and when I do see that, if it’s appropriate, I say what a wonderful family you have, or something along that line. I’m sure they have enough negative comments directed at them. When one of our children was expecting her third, I heard someone say to her, “Are you crazy?”
When I was forty, we adopted internationally, but that only change the demographics by one :-/
And I would amend your statement that contraception did tremendous damage to the American society. It heralded the downfall of the family.

The “aware” people where I am from (California, hey don’t rub it in) would talk about over-population, not under-population. This was the tone of such conversations since the 1970s with (I believe) Paul Erlich’s book on the “population bomb”. He was wrong on applying financial models to human reproduction, but his work helped define an ethos and an era (70s to 90s).
My sense now is that that phase has passed and rather than talking about this in one way or another, women (in particular) are doing what they personally want to do as regards family size. Women can have a larger sized family and be governor of the largest state in the Union. And still make leftists’ heads explode. What a country!
