ELCA officially recognizes first gay preachers
Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | 5/4/10 | JEFF STRICKLER

A Lutheran minister with Minnesota ties is one of the first two clergy to take advantage of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's (ELCA) vote to roster gay preachers.

The Rev. Darin Easler, currently working as a chaplain and grief counselor in an Atlanta hospice, served as a minister in the ELCA's Southeastern Minnesota Synod until 2003, which is when he announced that he's gay. He voluntarily removed himself from the ELCA roster -- its official list of ministers -- and was granted ministerial status by the United Church of Christ, which does not have a policy barring gays.

His partner, the Rev. Bradley Schmeling, also was removed from the roster when he announced that he was involved in a relationship. He currently is serving in an ELCA church in Atlanta that voted to ignore the fact he wasn't rostered.

More sin.

More opportunity for grace.

After moving to middle Georgia, this lifelong Lutheran is 60 miles from the nearest Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and 13 miles from an ELCA church. I am now a regular attendee of a Southern Baptist church.
I refuse to set foot into the ECLA church.

In another life I used to go to a Lutheran Church, I will not be going much in the future.

. . . Rev. Anita Hill, who has been pastoring St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church in St. Paul since 2001 without being on the ELCA roster. She said that she's going to apply for rostering but is waiting so that the distinction of being first goes to a California minister who was the first lesbian to challenge the old ELCA policy.

First to openly defy Biblical proscriptions? Not exactly a distinction to be coveted, according to Jude: ". . .they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless shepherds who care only for themselves. They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any rain. They are like trees in autumn that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been pulled up by the roots."

......It’s slithering itself right thru the front door...... and then the people are clapping once it takes the stage....and the enemy of mens souls laughs and laughs in the face of the people...becuase he knows how stupid they are.........because SIN when it comes full circle causes death.....people will die for this decision.

"More sin.

Folks, if you haven't jumped that ship already, now is a good time. The ELCA has been hemorrhaging members since its inception. And they aren't giving any reason to stem the flow now.

Oh good God.

Glad I didn’t enter an ELCA church.

Those that are within the Lutheran community know that not all Lutheran denominations are the same; however, not everyone outside Lutheranism knows these differences. The ELCA is a very liberal denomination, but the LCMS, WELS, and ELS are conservative theologically and socially. The MSM sometimes lumps all Lutherans together, which adds to the confusion.

Yup.

ELCA has been going off of the deep end for some time now........

It’s amazing how successful Liberals have been in infiltrating churches. Simply amazing.

I concur with what you are saying. However, it needs to be stated over and over again that ELCA ceased being Lutheran long ago. Their name has the same credibility as the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea. Maybe if their so-called bishop, Mark Hanson, took to wearing jumpsuits (and designer glasses) instead of clericals the people would get it.

I left my Church that I have been a member of since 1978. I fortunately have one nearby as a choice. We also have about 150 former members looking at starting a new congregation. We are in Fayette County, Ga. Welcome friend.
