Is this the face of Jesus Christ?Figure of crucified man on Shroud comes to life
WND ^ | March 24th, 2010

The world will have an extraordinary opportunity to look upon an undistorted, never-before-seen, moving 3-D portrait of a man who many think is the crucified Jesus Christ.

In just one week, graphic experts will bring to life an imprint on the holy relic known as the Shroud of Turin, believed by millions to be the burial shroud of Christ.

The Shroud of Turin bears the full-body, back-and-front image of a crucified man that is said to closely resemble the New Testament description of the passion and death of Christ. The 14-foot cloth long has posed mysteries because of its age and its negative image of a bloodstained and battered man who had been crucified. Believers claim it to be the miraculous image of Jesus, formed as he rose from the dead.

The History Channel will air "The Real Face of Jesus?," a special two-hour event that premieres March 30 at 9 p.m. EST. It aims to bring the world as close as it has ever come to seeing what Jesus may have actually looked like.

I agree. I have no idea if it’s real or not, but have watched the discussions on it for many years. Certainly, if it were it should not be worshiped (I am always bothered by the whole *relic* thing since it does seem to border on idol worship to me). I just find it funny that some people completely discount any possibility that this could be something out of hand, as if they are afraid if it’s real it has some bearing on our faith.
I know He was raised from the dead. Whether He left something behind or not is open to speculation.

Whether He left something behind or not is open to speculation.

Read verses 5 and 7 in the 20th chapter of the Gospel of John, there is NO DOUBT that He left the linen behind.

And just one other thought, IF it is His image on the Shroud of Turin, He put it there and if He put it there He did it for a REASON, it would not have been a mistake.

There was a fire in the 13th century that burned edges of the fabric, which was re-edged and hemmed. The mistake the original Carbon-14 testers made was reportedly uncovered when much older pollen was found on other parts of the cloth, and then follow-up tests on the fabric.

I could be convinced one way or the other, since the truth of the Gospel accounts does not rest on this one piece of physical evidence. However the image is impressive to many, including experts, as being amazingly detailed and well-preserved, of no known method of human fabrication, and showing the awful torture involved in Roman crucifixion.

Interesting take on the verses, thank you. I always thought it meant that He was not there so they believed. I never thought about them seeing the image on the linen.
And of course, I agree, if His image is on the shroud it was intentional.

I think that was the case.

I never thought about them seeing the image on the linen.

I don't know if they did or not, it's not mentioned in the verses (also, a person has to be at least 11 feet away from the unfolded shroud to see the image); however, it DOES say that He left the linens.

Yes, it does. I know I had read that before, in connection with the shroud. It has been argued about years ago on a religious bb I used to go to a lot. There were passionate arguments on both sides.

However, there’s a chance it may . . . verify, in a sense . . . perhaps even a scientific sense . . . the Resurrection.

People tend to want to explain miracles. I have heard all sorts of explanations for just about every miracle in scripture. I remember hearing about a man explaining that the Red Sea was really called the "Reed Sea" and that it was really only about 5 inches of water. That is how Moses got the Israelites across. As he was explaining this a boy in the back said "Praise God". When the gent asked what for, the boy replied that God drowned the entire Egyptian army in only five inches of water.

We have a tendency to think that God conforms to the laws of nature that He established for us. But I would suggest that God works outside of this boundary. There are many miracles that are simply impossible for us to ever rationally explain such as feeding 5000 with a few loaves and fishes, floating an ax handle, or walking on water. There is no rational explanation but it happened.

It is in our nature to want to witness a miracle, but that will only last for a few moments. It will never satisfy our appetite. I would suggest for those who would like to experience a miracle, that they simply reflect upon where they once were and how far God has brought them. We cannot rationally explain our changed nature, but yet we know it to be true. Each of us is a miracle from God, being perfected each day.

You may be right. It says that the NAPKIN was wrapped, which indicates that the burial shroud WAS NOT rolled up. So they saw the empty tomb AND the shroud and believed.

Actually it wasn’t always that way — there are Islamic depictions of Mohammed, but the Wahabbis that spread out from Saudia are really crazy and they’ve nearly succeeded in remaking theMuslim world in their loony image.

I have so enjoyed this Thread and the wisdom of those that believe.

I for one believe in Jesus ,and I believe this is the burial cloth of Jesus. It is just simple faith on both parts. I don't need or depend on the Shroud for me the believe through faith in Jesus.

As a mother who lost a son, I can tell you that I kept many articles of clothing, I still have one T shirt of his, and that was 23 yrs ago.

My point in telling you this: Both Marys, being mother and friend WOULD have saved that cloth and every article that touched him. That is just what women do. Men don't save things like this, but the mother would hold onto that shroud forever. Where it went after her death, perhaps a daughter, niece, cousin.

Whew, flowerplough.....your hatred of the Catholic Church doth issue forth and colour thy opinions, eh?

Those “old guys” you keep denigrating.....Look, one of those “old guys” who put that expedition together in 1978 happens to be my partner and one of my best friends. He turns 70 this Saturday and I’ll put his brain pan and faculties up against ANYONE’s. Obviously the Feds agree.....they keep him awfully busy even at his “advanced age” (happens to be a nuclear physicist). What he does for ‘em is none of your business (nor mine, for that matter).

As Swordmaker aptly pointed out, you are attacking blindly without the slightest knowledge of WHO you are attacking. I know a fair number of these “old guys”....and the “younger ones”, too. Did you realize that the group that went to Turin in 1978 were actually quite young? Look at pictures from that era (I have some). Shoot, some would have been called “hippies” in that day. Seriously.

I may add here that most of them were either aethists or agnostics (at least one Jewish); NOT pre-disposed to saying “Hallelujah, and pass the wine....it’s JEEEEEEESUS !!!!!”

Far from it.

They were damned smart people who largely came from the nuke weapons community (JPL, Los Alamos, etc.). The best and brightest. I consider myself to be a pretty intelligent person, but some of them make me feel like an idiot in comparison.

Isabel Piczek may be 70ish....but she got her PhD in particle physics at age 13 1/2. Top that. She’s one of the leading theoretical particle physicists in the world today. That is a fact.

I could go on, but I have tremendous respect for the Tom D’Muhala’s and John Jackson’s and Isabel Piczek’s and Barrie Schwortz’s and Peter Soons’ and Al Whanger’s of the world. There are many, many others (Phil Dayvault....former special agent for the FBI, Sue Benford, God rest her soul...lovely young woman...), but they all share certain traits.

Yes, they’re smart....many of them brilliant. They believe in the scientific method and brook no nonsense. Do the hard work and let the results speak for themselves.

So do me a favor and stop insulting them, their work. Many of them are my friends, damn it.
