Interesting take on the verses, thank you. I always thought it meant that He was not there so they believed. I never thought about them seeing the image on the linen.
And of course, I agree, if His image is on the shroud it was intentional.

I don't know if they did or not, it's not mentioned in the verses (also, a person has to be at least 11 feet away from the unfolded shroud to see the image); however, it DOES say that He left the linens.
