Catholics and other Christians probably don't care what anyone says about them anymore, given the relative lack of outrage over Richard Dawkins' comments in The Washington Post this week. (See blog post below). So who will notice what Christopher Hitchens just unloaded on the Dennis Miller show this morning? Miller, let it be said, was not buying it at all--merely letting Hitchens spout this about abortion and Mother Theresa:
"Mother Theresa spent her whole life saying (that what Calcutta needs) is a huge campaign against family planning. I mean, who comes to that conclusion who isn't a complete fanatic? She took - and I would directly say stole...millions and millions of dollars and spent all the money not on the poor, but on the building of nearly 200 convents in her own name around the world to glorify herself and to continue to spread the doctrine that, as she put it -- when she got her absurd Nobel Peace Prize -- that the main threat to world peace is abortion and contraception. The woman was a fanatic and a fundamentalist and a fraud, and millions of people are much worse off because of her life, and it's a shame there is no hell for your bitch to go to."
Christopher Hitchens is a regular contributor to The New Republic, The Atlantic and Vanity Fair.
He attributes Mother Teresas acts of goodness to her belief that she will be richly rewarded for them in heaven. In other words, she was simply looking out for number one, acting selfishly in her own self-interest, looking to cash in on the Churchs immortality.
As Wilson puts it, Mother Teresa is an extraordinary person but it should not be forgotten that she is secure in the service of Christ and the knowledge of her Churchs immortality.
Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta is not a fraud at all.
Ah yes, the great philantraphist Christopher Hitchens. We should all care what he has to say.....
They do protect their own don't they.
Hitch was the "color commentator" during ABC's telecast of Mother Teresa's funeral and spent the time spluttering with rage at the "phony".
It was a truly unforgettable performance. It has to go down as one of the nadirs of live TV and that's sayin' somethin'!!
Hitchens has been dissing Mother Teresa for a long time now so this is nothing new. If anything, it reflects his fixation and underlying unresolved oedipal issues.
He, of course, went to Calcutta himself to care for the poorest of the poor, for the dregs of their society. He did so infinitely better and that’s why he has the standing to criticize her work and her character.
Not.

Obviously, Hitchens believes that Mother Theresa lived an immoral life ( by his own lights ). The interesting question to ask is this -— given that he does not believe in God, what makes his morality superior to that of men like Hitler ?

When the vilest of society are given a voice and a place of importance, something is inherent flawed in a people.
In the world of black is white & good is evil it is obvious that:
Mother Theresa who took both a stand and action on moral beliefs that even babies have the right to life is a villain, while Al Gore who promotes lies and scare-tactics for political purposes yet hypocritically violates the rules he would have others obey is a hero.
Can light and dark coexist? Obviously not.
These tired old atheists are getting more and more desperate in their attempts to “rile” faithful Christians.
Boring.
Stupid.
Tired.
Old.
Hitchens.
Still spewing his vile bile, I see.
Christopher Hitchens getting a Brazilian wax job. Yikes!
UNBELIEVABLE!
Even the most venal of unbelievers has to admit that Mother Teresa reached out to the poor and did for them what their own would not. Whether or not she adhered to the Liberal Agenda of Population Control is irrelavant. She left her comfortable life in Europe and lived among the poorest and most despised in a foreign land, and dedicated her life to easing their suffering. Whether she did it for Christ, or for them, or for herself is none of Hitchen’s concern. the fact remains that SHE did it, and HE did NOT.
Christopher who?
So what’s this guy ever done to help another soul?
I am a believer, I know God exists for me, because he walks with me every day, teaching me about my humanity. And I certainly know that I have a ways to go on the compassion and tolerance issue...it’s a lesson that I realize I’ve just not gotten yet...
I will gladly extend my hand in invitation to anybody that would join me in the wonderful experience of knowing my God. But if someone chooses not to accept that invitation then they are due respect for their own decisions.
But if some numb nut chooses to foment at the mouth and call themselves an ‘intellectual’ BECAUSE of their non-belief, and disrespect my beliefs, then my tolerance level boils down (or up) since I am not a perfect human being and I tend to let fly.
I DON’T CARE if they want to believe that if they take their last non-believing gasp of breath and turn into a slimy glob of mold after being finished off by hungry maggots, never to be seen or heard from AGAIN, that’s fine with me. That just means that I won’t have to listen to them whine all day long about my harp music being turned up loud, and my streets of gold won’t be overcrowded with blow hard opinionists that THINK they’re intellectuals just because they say so. I mean, who the hell decided these people were the only ones with intellect? These people actually think that everything was made from NOTHING! What kind of intellectual idea is that?
I will gladly spend my days with the master scientist who created it all, with the one that sent down his son with a new covenant that says if you do these few things that I ask, you will live on earth in peace and love and I will not destroy you, and your soul will reside in my presence forever! And I intend to belt out ‘Amazing Grace’ from the rooftops if I so choose, because it makes me happy!

Christopher Hitchens?
Who is Christopher Hitchens?
Who cares who he is?
Probably just another liberal whiner.
I get tired of hearing how wonderful Mother Teresa is. She seemed like a hustler.
On Mother Teresa’s first day in Heaven, she was walking about and getting the `lay of the land’, as it were, when she saw a woman surrounded by people. Observing this for a minute or so, she made a bee-line to St. Peter.
“Pete, I just saw Dianne Spencer surrounded by a bunch of autograph hounds. She had a bigger halo than me, I mean, it’s HUGE!
“OK, let’s look back, shall we? I worked with lepers and starving children. She worked out. I lived a celibate life, working 20 hours a day and eating gruel. She had a husband, children and boyfriends, and liked a good bottle of wine before lunch—if you know what I mean. She ... “
And St. Peter raised his hand and said, “Agnes, please. Now, now listen ... you didn’t put your head through the steering wheel of a Mercedes Benz either, did you .... “
But seriously, ain’t it odd that Mother Teresa gave an interview in 1996 saying that she hoped her friend Princess Diana would be happier after she shed herself of Prince Jughead, while that same year she flew to Ireland, all the way from Calcutta to support the Church in its efforts to lobby so that an Irish woman married to a wife-beating incestuous drunk should never expect anything better and might endanger her soul if she begged for a fresh start?
From this it might seem that the Church applies sterner laws to the poor, while offering indulgences to the rich.
“God Is Not Great, How Religion Poisons Everything”, pp. 17-18, Christopher Hitchens.
You know, if I were Hitch, and I really believed this life were all there was, I do think I’d spend a lot less time being miserable about some dead old Albanian nun and a lot more time with booze, coke and hookers.
