Wow! This is big news. For months the bishops have been threatening to oppose the healthcare legislation as long as it included abortion funding. But I didn't expect this. Wonderful news. Catholic.org reports:
An E-mail directive has been sent from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Pro-Life Activities Secretariat mobilizing every parish in the United States of America. It contains an urgent message which is to be distributed in every parish this weekend and announced at every single Mass. This massive and urgent appeal may be unprecedented in our history as Catholics in America. It is an effort to mobilize the Catholic faithful on an urgent matter of public policy concerning the fundamental and foundational human right to life.
The E-Mail specifically asks that no parish opt out of this initiative.
The bishops are urging all parishes to insert a document into all parish bulletins across the country. The pdf of the file is here.
The text reads:USCCB NATIONWIDE BULLETIN INSERT
Tell Congress: Remove Abortion Funding & Mandates from Needed Health Care Reform
Congress is preparing to debate health care reform legislation on the House and Senate floors.
Genuine health care reform should protect the life and dignity of all people from the moment of conception until natural death. The U.S. bishops conference has concluded that all committee approved bills are seriously deficient on the issues of abortion and conscience, and do not provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor. The bills will have to change or the bishops have pledged to oppose them.
Our nation is at a crossroads. Policies adopted in health care reform will have an impact for good or ill for years to come...
No one should be required to pay for or participate in abortion...

Jack Chick materials are not allowed at all on the Religion Forum. Do not mention Chick in any context.
Que?
The abortion issue gives us a tactical opportunity, however, to apply the breaks and then throw a spanner into the gearbox.
It's THE MAJOR dealbreaker for me (beinst I'm against murder, legalized murder, and extra-and-specially the compulsory subsidy of legalized murder.) But it's not the only dealbreaker--- not by a ong shot. 'Cause it's NO DEAL all the way.

In the past 10 days, you have posted a total of 15 articles. Of those, 10 have been about Catholics or the Catholic Church. Evidently you are searching out articles about Catholics or the Church in order to post them.
It's called "discussing current news." A lot of that occurs on Free Republic - no reason why it shouldn't happen in the Religion Forum, too. The real issue is why is no one else posting these articles?
From a post of mine on February 20, 2007:
...I don't post "anti" threads. I post news and op-ed articles that have a culturally religious component - Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, etc - just about anything that strikes me as worthy of intelligent discussion (UFOs, anyone?). Since the Catholic Church is the single largest denominational body in the US, you'd expect that they would produce the single largest number of news articles per religious group. If posting news articles is being contentious, then I suggest that Catholics persuade their priests and bishops to stop putting themselves in the news, and stop bashing the messenger when there's something to post. And from May 22, 2008
IMO most people don't take notice of threads in the Religion Forum unless a) it was posted by someone they know, or b) THEIR beliefs are mentioned in the thread title. Case in point - you thought I was a "weird disgruntled Catholic." I'd bet most Catholics on FR never noticed the many threads I posted about the Calvinists, the Baptists, the Dispensationalists, the Mormons, or the Swedenborgites. They're out there - you probably just didn't notice them."Thats what FR is for, posting articles for discussion, on topics of interest to the poster. We have a lively Religion forum in great part thanks to Alex."
My apologies! I thought that was meant in jest.
My apologies!
I stand by those comments of mine. I think it is very good for people of all religious persuasions to pay close attention to the Catholic Church and seek to discuss the developments in that arena with others.
The Catohlics should welcome critical attention given them. It is a good sign.
Like I said, of the 15 you posted in the last 10 days, 10 were about Catholics. That’s just the facts.
Oh, and you did manage to post a really bizarre article, which claims the appearances at Fatima were actually UFOs, so I guess that falls under the heading of “Catholic” as well as “other.”
Sorry. Your total is now up to 17 posts in the last 10 days, with 12 being about Catholics or the Church. That’s 66% up to 70%.
12 threads out of 17 that are "about" Catholics. Five of them are from openly Catholic sources. Five present the Catholic Church in a good light. At least two articles openly promote Catholic doctrine. And you're complaining? Wassamatter, am I not posting enough Catholic devotional threads for everyone? Since we're now keeping score, how many pro-Protestant threads have the Catholics posted in the last ten days?
FWIW I've got at least two SBC threads waiting in the wings this afternoon. Keep your calculator handy.
Isn’t it amusing to see people from moribund, boring denominations so totally obsessed with our 2000 year old Church, ever ancient, ever new, outlasting all the man-made ones, as kingdoms and nations rise and fall?
I look at a big part of FR, especially THIS PARTICULAR PART OF IT YOU’RE DEALING WITH, as somehow participating in the Catholic Church’s outreach to the mentally ill!
Speaking of calculations . . . can you CALCULATE what it would otherwise cost to institutionalize someone who instead apparently at least stays off the streets and more or less out of trouble by sitting in front of his computer obsessing over us?
