O'Malley to preside at Kennedy funeral
Boston.com ^ | August 28, 2009 | Michael Paulson

Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley of Boston will preside at the funeral of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy tomorrow at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (the Mission Church). The Rev. J. Donald Monan, a Jesuit priest who was the longtime president of Boston College and is now the chancellor, will be the principal celebrant. And the Rev. Mark R. Hession, pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville, will deliver the homily.

PROGRAM DETAILS:

First Reading: Curran Raclin, stepson
Responsorial: Kara Kennedy Allen, daughter
Second Reading: Caroline Raclin, stepdaughter
Homily: Rev. Mark Hession
Intercessory Prayers: Kennedy's four grandchildren, and the youngest grandchild of each of his siblings, will read quotes from his speeches. (The family chose to honor the youngest children because Kennedy was the youngest in his family.)
Offertory: Grandchildren
Music by Yo-Yo Ma
Communion
Music by Placido Domingo accompanied by the Tanglewood Festival Chorus
"Ave Maria" by Susan Graham of the Metropolitan Opera
Tribute: Edward M. Kennedy Jr. and US Representative Patrick J. Kennedy (sons)
Eulogy: President Obama
Song: America the Beautiful

ANALYSIS:

The family and church officials have essentially chosen to split the roles three ways. Cardinal O'Malley, because of his role as the archbishop of Boston, will technically preside over the funeral, but Fathers Monan and Hession, who had closer relationships with Senator Kennedy, will be far more visible to casual viewers of the liturgy. Monan will celebrate the Mass, which will include presiding over the congregation and reciting the prayers of the Mass and being at the center of the altar during the Eucharist. Hession will deliver the homily, and his task will be to take the readings of the day and apply them to the moment.

Disgraceful.

Shame on O’Malley, though I can't say that I am surprised.

I had great hopes for O’Malley when he took over Boston, but he has just been awful and this is really a terrible move.

I would be less scandalized if he were just doing the mass, but letting Obama give a “eulogy” is Notre Dame all over again, but even worse because now Obama is standing in the pulpit. I just don’t know why this is being allowed.

Incidentally, I heard a Dem strategist yesterday saying that he thought that Obama could use the eulogy to energize the Democratic base. So no matter how people in the Church try to claim this is not political, even the Dems themselves admit that it is a political event. Shame, shame, shame.

Absolutely shameful display of Catholic hypocracy. Kennedy supported abortion, infidelity, rape, cowardice, fornication, and drunkenness.

The Catholic church is not what most of it’s members believe and hope that it is. The roots of this go back centuries. What’s one more scandal?

Someone should remind the gutless Cardinal to include in the “Prayer of the Faithful” the millions of babies killed in abortion through Kennedy’s active support.

I told my sister yesterday that Kennedy would get at least a Bishop and maybe a Cardinal to say his mass.

It’s disgusting , he shouldnt even get a Catholic funeral.

Catholic heirarchy in this country have sucked up to the Kennedy;s for years.

>>Why do I even bother going to this Catholic church with all of it’s rules of right and wrong if at the end of the day the guy who broke all the rules gets Mister Big presiding over his funeral??<<

This was one of the comments.
Guess the dude never read the story of the Prodigal Son.

Kennedy and O’Malley were friends. Catholics in MA bow at the Kennedy altar and rationalize that because Teddy ‘Did so much for the poor’ the rest could be forgiven.

The Catholic Church is celebrating this man’s life. This speaks volumes.

Energizing people over Ted’s cold stiff body in the presence of his families in a Catholic church, no less - It will be a Wellstone moment, won’t it?

Will bam’s people ask that the crosses be removed or covered?

One of those comments;

“Ted acted more like Jesus then most of people who have left comments I have read so far”

I still can never picture Jesus abandoning a woman to fate from a danger he caused or doing a “waitress sandwich” with his friend.

I once maintained that Democrats believe they’ll get prizes in the hereafter from the almighty for supporting abortion. From some of those comments I still stand by that comment.

Maybe I'm wrong but looking at the Kennedy family tree it seems to me that for a devout Catholic family there aren't that many children in recent generations. Maybe it's the liberalism.
