Health experts think some LDS missionaries need to lose a little weight

SALT LAKE CITY -- Local health experts say potential missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should shed a few pounds before heading to the mission field if they're extremely overweight.

Steven Aldana, CEO of Wellsteps, spends his life speaking about the problems of obesity. He says anyone obese, whether a missionary or not, is going to face health issues such as being sick more often. "The obesity problem reduces productivity across the board," he said.

Aldana says the problem gets even worse for those choosing to serve senior missions. "About the time seniors reach retirement age is exactly the same time at which chronic diseases manifest themselves the most," he said.

The Church declined to comment on whether they are keeping more missionary candidates home because of weight issues, but a spokesperson told us they have had a program for a long time now where severely overweight missionary candidates are encouraged to talk with their bishops about weight issues and guidelines relating to the body-mass index.

Aldana says increased health risks from obesity will affect anyone in any situation.

We had a couple at hour house for dinner the other night. Nice enough guys, but yeah, overweight. They were the quietest, most reserved pair we’ve ever had over. Made it all the more difficult to convert them.

My favorite pair were from about 10 years ago. One guy put on 50 pounds while he was in the area. Had more than his share of ice cream at our table.

Have you ever actually read the word of wisdom?

From your post it would appear you have not or, if you have, you came away with no understanding of the doctrine. And of course, you have never read any commentary by church authorities on the matter.

And - here’s a shock - Mormons are human! They have all the frailties and faults common to the rest of humanity. But the faithful ones do try and live their religion so naturally, when they fail (and they will) they are “hypocritical”.

Missionaries I have seen lose any poundage very quickly with all of the exercise they get. My husband has a friend and a cousin (different people) who each lost a lot of weight and did not gain it back until they were married and their wives fed them well.

Yeah scory he has. I don't remember his highest church office but I think he said Stake High Council. It is pathetic that some Mormons think they shore up their position by attacking others.

I have seen missionaries who go to South America lose an alarmingly great amount of weight. Of course it is due to dysentary.

Maybe they should send all the fat ones to South America, or one of the third world countries. Problem solved!

Keep your guilt Freep. It doesn't work on me anymore.

I am doing my Christian duty to protect others from being sucked into a well documented cult, by showing the whole story to the world.

I've been called a lot of things by "christian" mormons...Heretic, apostate...Benn accused of persecution etc. There is nothign that you can say or do that will force me to keep the whole story, and the psychological abuse of mormonism secret anymore.

My desire to help and protect others is a sign that I have grown since being saved from the cult.

All that anger...

I hope you don't intend to follow the words of your prophet Brigham Young..

Brigham Young threatened: "I say, rather than that apostates should flourish here, I will unsheath my bowie knife and conquer or die. (Great commotion in the congregation, and a simultaneous burst of feeling, assenting to the declaration.) Now, you nasty apostates, clear out, or judgment will be put to the line, and righteousness to the plummet. (Voices, generally, 'go it, go it.') If you say it is right, raise your hands. (All hands up.) Let us call upon the Lord to assist us in this, and every good work" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p.83)

Brigham Young made this statement in 1846: "I ... warned those who lied and stole and followed Israel that they would have their heads cut off, for that was the law of God and it should be executed" ("Manuscript History of Brigham Young," December 20, 1846, typed copy; original in LDS church archives).

I was a high preist and bishopric member in good standing not more than 2 years ago before I discovered the lds fraud. I resigned my membership.

I was defending Romney, and went to the stake library to disprove a quote by Joseph Smith which claimed to be from the "History of the Church". Joseph Smith claimed to be greater than Jesus Christ. Brigham Young also taught the Christ was a polygamist with children, that Mary was nto a virgin, that the atonement was not sufficient justifying murder of sinners, etc. Here also are a few others that exposed the lie...

"If they want a beardless boy to whip all the world, I will get on the top of the mountain and crow like a rooster. I shall always beat them.... I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet."-Joseph Smith (History of the Church vol. 6, pp. 408-9)

Brigham Young once stated: "Now remember from this time forth, and for ever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p.51).

"These name-titles all signify that our Lord is the only Son of the Father in the flesh. Each of the words is to be understood literally. Only means only; Begotten means begotten; and Son means son. Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers" Bruce R. McConkie (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, pp.546-47).

In the light of their understanding that God is a procreating personage of flesh and bone, latter-day prophets have made it clear that despite what it says in Matthew 1:20, the Holy Ghost was not the father of Jesus.... The Savior was fathered by a personage of flesh and bone, and was literally what Nephi said he was, "Son of the Eternal Father" (Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Autumn, 1967, pp.100-101).

“I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was ‘the Alcoran [Koran] or the Sword.’ So shall it eventually be with us ’Joseph Smith or the Sword!’ “ -Joseph Smith, 9/11 wannabe, at Far West Missouri on October 14, 1838.

Apostle Orson Hyde: “I discover that some of the Eastern papers represent me as a great blasphemer, because I said, in my lecture on Marriage, at our last Conference, that JESUS CHRIST WAS MARRIED at Cana of Galilee, THAT MARY, MARTHA, AND OTHERS WERE HIS WIVES, AND THAT HE BEGAT CHILDREN. (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, page 210)

Brigham Young, answering critics who claimed polygamy as a relic of barbarism: “ Yes, one of the relics of Adam, of Enoch, of Noah, of Abraham, of Isaac, of Jacob, of Moses, David, Solomon, the Prophets, OF JESUS, AND HIS APOSTLES.” (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, page 328)

Brigham Young: “The Scripture says that He, the LORD, came walking in the Temple, with HIS TRAIN; I do not now who they were, unless HIS WIVES AND CHILDREN;...” (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, page 309)

"President Smith then stated that the meeting had been called, because God had commanded it; and it was made known to him by vision and by the Holy Spirit. . . . it was the will of God that they should be ordained to the ministry and go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, for the coming of the Lord, which was nigh — even fifty six years should wind up the scene." (History of the Church, Vol. 2, page 182).This prophecy was spoken by Joseph Smith in 1835, and recorded by Oliver Cowdery. The fifty-six years were passed by 1891.

Deuteronomy 18:22 (King James Version) 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Wonderful. You have been saved from the decisions that you have made. Very funny. Only an insecure person can accuse a stranger of a guilt trip. I have no stake in your life. I just think you are a fibber, but you will never admit it.

“..psychological abuse of mormonism..” That is rich my friend. That is called blaming the church. Where is your own accountability? I know people who were tortured and abandoned by their parents who don’t blame their problems on ANYONE.

What problems have I claimed to have ?

I am following the lead of my Savior, the good shepherd, and PROTECTING THE FLOCK from false prophets and ravening wolves.

You are in fact helping me. Everytime you post gives me an opportunity to counter you with referenced lds quotes which are read by hundreds, maybe thousands here every day.

Eph 5:11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
Eph 5:12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
Eph 5:13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,...

President Joseph Fielding Smith has written: "Man may commit certain grievous sins ... that will place him beyond the reach of the atoning blood of Christ .... Joseph Smith taught that there were certain sins so grievous that man may commit, that they will place the transgressors beyond the power of the atonement of Christ. If these offenses are committed, then the blood of Christ will not cleanse them from their sins even though they repent. Therefore their only hope is to have their own blood shed to atone, as far as possible, in their behalf." (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, pp.133¬138. )

Matthew 7:15-16, Jesus Christ: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

...And just for the record, my father, a returned lds missionary, left me when I was 4. You didn't know becuase I didn't mention it.

psychological abuse of mormonism

I have a friend (also X-LDS) who describes it as “spiritual rape.”
