From the Russert Interview question on Roe V Wade:

Steele: I think the Court will evaluate the law as society progresses, as the Court is supposed to do.

So his position on Roe V Wade (and I guess on all issues when all is said and done) is that our unelected overlords on the Supreme Court will guage societal sentiment at the moment and decide what the law should be and declare it to be so. And that over time, they may choose unilaterally to change that to fit the progress of society. Wow. If he beleived that, why did he even want to be a Senator?

All of those who touted Steele and praised him to the rooftops only a month or two ago were warned about this.

Ken Blackwell should have been the choice.

The COURTS must re-evaluate the law as society PROGRESSES? A REAL conservative there! LOL. The GOP just wanted a black face - they were trying to out-black Obama! What a loser.

Your comment about Steele not making his appointments yet, troubles me. His lack of appointments, is it due to a lack of qualified people? or is he showing signs of an Obama-like personality and trying to be the center of attention?

If it is the former, qualified people need to be found. If it is the latter, then Steele needs to be removed from his position.

On the abortion issue, I personally believe that it will best be solved as a 10th Amendment issue.

I left the GOP a while ago. Can’t believe I actually thought Steele would change things for the better. For me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

I am done with the GOP. It is a dying party

I left after ‘read my lips’ George Bush set the conservative movement back 20 years.

I do occasionally align myself with conservative GOP officials but I am done with the country club republicans.

Now we need to find a way to build the Conservative movement into a massive political operation.

The entire GOP’s days of existing are also numbered. Conservatism, as a political option, is also numbered, unless a serious and successful effort in creating a “Conservative Party” is actually done asap that a MAJORITY OF CONSERVATIVES will really support as just one political entity. Creating a finite number of conservative parties at the same time instead will also help to destroy any serious future for conservatism in this country.

We well survive Steele.
I had high hopes for him, but the Party Chairman does not have that much to do with our success, as a Party.

In most elections, a very small number of people consider abortion to be the most important issue, or even one of the top 3 most important issues.

As long as we make sure that we elect prolife Republicans, in the Primary, who the heck cares what the functionaries and Party officials think?

In order to win the prolife battle, we will have to have the votes and the help of people who do not give a rip about the abortion issue. This is, unfortunately, a fact.

Good points.

I would like Congress to pass a simple majority law, declaring abortion a State issue, under the 10th Amendment.

Congress could then, also, limit the appellate jurisdiction of the Courts, in that same law.

This would get us past the Constitutional Amendment requirements.

Of course, the radicals on the prolife side do not want this to be a “states rights” issue. They want to save all of the babies, which means, in practice NONE of the babies!

If you want to limit judicial interference in law-making and laws passed, a law needs to passed that guts the Marbury v Madison ruling of 1802(or 1803).

Do that, and the courts are returned to the state which the Founders intended.

A show horse not a work horse.

I’d take Ken Blackwell over him in a heartbeat.

“I would like Congress to pass a simple majority law, declaring abortion a State issue, under the 10th Amendment.”

It would have to be a resolution, not a law, since The Federal government, all three branches, has no constitutional authority on the subject of abortion.

Any very small amount of support I still had for Steele has now evaporated.

He needs to be aborted as RNC chair. Stat.

We desperately need a replacement party for the GOP.

I don't want a leader who waffles on abortion every time he's asked about it.

He didn't waffle, he clearly stated that abortion is a woman's choice to make. Contrary to the Republican Platform.

We must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence. That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make it clear that the 14th Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions. We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.

We oppose abortion, but our pro-life agenda does not include punitive action against women who have an abortion. We salute those who provide alternatives to abortion and offer adoption services, and we commend Congressional Republicans for expanding assistance to adopting families and for removing racial barriers to adoption.

Michael clearly not being part of "We".
