Steele says that he was adopted, although I wouldn’t be too sure about anything he says.

GOP’s Steele Clarifies His Abortion Comments

Thursday, March 12, 2009 3:47 PM

WASHINGTON — GOP national chairman Michael Steele says he’s opposed to abortion and that Roe v. Wade should be repealed, commenting a day after a magazine quoted him as saying abortion was “an individual choice.”

On Thursday morning, Mr. Steele issued a statement that read:

I am pro-life, always have been, always will be.

I tried to present why I am pro-life while recognizing that my mother had a “choice” before deciding to put me up for adoption. I thank her every day for supporting life. The strength of the pro-life movement lies in choosing life and sharing the wisdom of that choice with those who face difficult circumstances. They did that for my mother and I am here today because they did. In my view Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be repealed. I realize that there are good people in our party who disagree with me on this issue.

But the Republican Party is and will continue to be the party of life. I support our platform and its call for a Human Life Amendment. It is important that we stand up for the defenseless and that we continue to work to change the hearts and minds of our fellow countrymen so that we can welcome all children and protect them under the law.

Steele clarified his stance in a written statement after online publication of the interview with GQ magazine.

Steele, who is adopted, said in the interview that his mother had the option of getting an abortion or giving birth.

He said: “You can choose life, or you can choose abortion.” He said his mother chose life.

Asked whether he thought women had the right to choose abortion, Steele said: “Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice.”

Steele was elected chairman of the National Republican Committee in January. He describes himself as “pro-life.”

I am willing to accept him at his word.
However, he needs to stay away from the press, raise money, recruit and support candidates, and stick up for other Republicans.
That is his job, not this media gadfly stuff, stuff he does not do well, anyway.

Technically, what he said is correct.
Abortion, unfortunately IS a choice, and so is Life.

Steele does NOT handle interviews well, He is very bad in front of a camera.

Yes, abortion is a choice, under current law, but it is the WRONG choice, and Steele somehow never gets it right in these interviews -—

He should stay away from the media!

Michael IS pro-life ... pro-mother’s life. The alive unborn, well their open season for the ones Michael is pro-life toward. Kill ‘em or birth ‘em, it’s apparently above his pay grade to have a moral position on that issue.

Fathers Corapi and Pacwa addressed this last night. Excellent program! Did you catch it?

No, Fr.Corapi sort of bores me, and I don't watch TV anyway. Nor did I catch the answer in that verse.

But thanks.

Even leaving right an wrong out of it, it's in clear opposition to the Republican platform.

She wouldn't take the position, but Sarah Brady would be an improper choice for President of the NRA. If offered, she'd be morally obligated to turn it down. I like Steele, but he's in the same position. I'm in the minority here in that I don't think it's necessary for every Republican candidate to be in agreement with every position in the platform, the head of the party is quite another thing. And this is a biggie.

Conservatives are destrying Republicans. It’s just that almost all conservatives are IN the GOP.

The far left will destroy the DNC eventually when they go too far and conservative or moderate-to-right leaning Dems switch parties again or get booted.

You’ll know conservatives are winning again when it’s the NE liberal RINO’s that start losing like Specter, Snowe, Collins, etc. Either by a conservative whipping them in a primary or they get beat in the general by a REAL left winger that is a Dem...why put in a RINO when you can get the real thing?

If the “Republicans” can’t ever win anything again it’s not because we conservatives are destroying them...we just aren’t voting for them.

I think this goes beyond that, and is a pro-choice personal position. But even if it's only handling cameras badly, that's a disqualifier. The head of the GOP must be able to articulate Republican positions.

I guess we need to truly bottom out as a party to really know those depths, so we come come back stronger. It seems that at every turn, the GOP is disappointing, whether it is the political figures or the party leadership.

It’s discouraging, and sometimes (especially lately) I want to say ‘I give up,’ and forget everything, go some place far away where I won’t think about all the GOP ineptness.

I’m not a loser, however. Though those thoughts occasionally creep in, I won’t give up and will fight for what I believe.

He says he is pro-life one day, pro-choice the next. He has been doing the same for years.

But if you question him about it, he will say that you are ugly and incendiary.
