Why so many LDS threads?
08-May-2008 | Grig

Posted on 05/08/2008 5:04:47 PM PDT by Grig

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why.

For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed.

Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express their opinions and views on religious matters, even when people choose to use those rights to express criticism of our own faith. We also support the ideas embodied in FR rules against religion bashing. There is no need for hostility and there should be no room for bigotry on FR. Every religion has it's miracles and mysteries. Every faith has things in it that are not or can not be proven, and things that run contrary to what secular science would have us believe. Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally doesn't feel the need to belittle the faith of others.

We have, to the best of our ability, conducted ourselves with civility and dignity. We do not feel that that respect has been returned by some posters (putting it mildly).

When Mormon missionaries were murdered, the moderators were kept busy pulling jubilant posts off the thread. When Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home, we contended for months with posters who appeared to be motivated by religious bigotry doing all they could to smear the family and accuse the father. Several posters openly admitted their religious motivation in opposing Mitt Romney and confessed that no matter how conservative any Mormon was, they would never vote for one for President of the USA. When the Pope died, I don't think any Mormon poster posted anything unkind, yet the thread about the passing of our President recently needed many comments removed.

Nearly every thread having any connection with Mormons, or Utah winds up being hijacked by anti-Mormon activists who copy and paste the same false accusations over and over even when it has been clearly and factually pointed out to them on multiple occasions that they are bearing false witness against our faith. Everything possible is done by these activists to make FR a hostile place for Mormons, and for at least some of them, bashing Mormonism is all they do here. Their most recent project is trying to blur the fact that the polygamous FLDS is a separate and distinct religion from ours, just as Lutherans are a separate and distinct religion from Catholicism.

In our opinion, such poster do a great disservice to FR and to their fellow freepers by spreading disinformation and promoting hostility towards a people known for walking the walk of conservative values.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us, but it is the moderators call to make and we respect their right to do so. That doesn't mean we have to be passive however. We have all spent many hours refuting the accusations leveled at our faith, but these wind up buried deep in a flood of comments, effectively shouting us down.

Recently some of us have decided to take a more proactive approach. Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down. We will actively define our faith here rather than just respond to accusations.

So expect to see lots of Mormon threads, now and for as long as we see fit to keep posting them (although probably not as many as there are Catholic threads). They will be about our basic doctrines and responses to common accusations. If you want to know what our faith is about, read the articles we post. We will post them as open threads and I encourage you to compare the difference in tone and spirit between what we post and what our critics say.

It is fact. Deeds do not a God make, nor do they save you. This verse is very clear, the is only one way, all other such claims are false, including claims there is no God. Christians would do good to remember this one verse, for it ends all arguments. Non Christians and non believers would do good to learn it...

You'd do well not to throw verses at someone who doesn't believe NT writings are inspired. How does uninspired writing end an argument?

It is YOU who are defying what SCRIPTURE has plainly said: No interpretation needed.

See 1342. All comes down to faith again. Faith that your writings are inspired. I don't happen to have it.

Most of those assets are buildings, and as far as that Goes, most churches that have been around a while have some nice buildings which are worth a lot, care to guess the current value of the Sistine Chapel?

First off...what's the difference? The poster said the cream was WRONG. Seems to me, that LD$, Inc. has lot's of "cream"..and is very boastful, and proud of it to boot. Are you proud of BILLIONS, AND BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF ASSETS?

How many people could have clean water, and vaccinations for one building you guy's build? How about a mall worth millions?? I wonder how many pounds of food that could've bot?

Are you comparing your buildings to the Sistine Chapel? doesn't surprise me that you would, though.

Care to wager on what the dollar amount is, that LD$, Inc holds in stocks and securities?

How about non-buildings, like raw land? Care to wager the total amount in $$? Heck how about just acreage?

How about malls, hotels/resorts, and restaurants?

While you're at it....how about proof of your statement. The FACT is you as a mere member of LD$, Inc....have no complete idea what the assets are of the mormon church, nor do you know how it's governed.

It's sad DU.....your church is about "Branding", "Image", "Money".....

I pray for your church leaders..........

I Said: I am an amateur, I get nothing for my service here. I come here only for one reason for the testimony of Jesus, and the Glory of God. The lord knows I have had no end of hassling for being a Mormon who will not knuckle under even when I have tons of posters coming at me with all manner of tactics. I testify to you that I know the Book of Mormon is true, I know Jesus lives I received this knowledge direct from God, both testimonies at the Same time, just as First John 4:1-3 promised they would if the message was of God. If you want to know as I know, then ignore all this banter here, and Put the Book of Mormon to "The Test"

U Said: I am also a lay-person....and I also come here for one reason. To testify to you and others about my God...who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus died on the cross...for us all. And their is only ONE WAY to God, and that is thru His Son, Jesus. Not some man. Not some angel. Nor some prophet. But thru Jesus...and only thru Jesus can you be set free.

I applaud your testimony of Jesus and concur with it.

U Said: My Lord knows...I have been hassled for speaking TRUTH here. But I will not give up, the GOOD FIGHT. And I will testify to you right now... the book of mormon is a deception direct from Satan, who is the god of this world...and a liar and a thief. And I've rec'd this directly from God's WORD.

I am sorry you believe you are entitled to tell others what they will receive when they pray about the Book for Mormon, that's just not how it works.

First John 4:1-3 is very explicit in how it says to try things out and asking others to pray for you and tell you what God had to say is just not on the short list.

U Said: DU, once again I tell you I HAVE put the book of Mormon to the test. And it fails.

I understand exactly what you are saying, and it would be a conundrum, if there were only us two and our words.

I'll take you at your word, you honestly believe God told you the Book of Mormon is not true. Take me at mine that God unquestionably told me it is true. God does not change and answers prayers, so to a lurker, one of us must be lying...

It would be a tough problem with both of us telling our stories, and people asking questions, attack and counterattack, not very Christlike.

Luckily for us, God's ways are not man's ways, he has taught us to pray He has promised to answer. And he has told us to Ask him, He has Told us to try the spirits and in that last quotation, he has told us how to know if a message is from him.

First John 4:1-3
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Thus lurkers are not left without a way to know who is telling the truth and who is lying, if they want to know, the method is clear. Get a Book of Mormon, Get a bible, read BOTH of them pray about BOTH of them and let God tell you what is his word, if it's the Bible only Great! You now know I am a liar. If it is the Book of Mormon and the Bible, Great! you now know that Osage Orange is a liar. God will not lie to you (or both of us are deceived or liars) so you now have a way to discern truth from error, and it's Biblical!

There have been, are and probably will be many who will say "don't bother, I read it and it's a lie", fine there were, are and will be those who say it's true and clarifies so much (I am one of those).

The questions is, can you afford to believe some guy on the Internet when you could know for your self?

There will also be some who claim to testify of the Bible, and yet they will tell you not to put the promises of the Bible to work, they will tell you it's a sin of some type to ask God an honest question.

My advice to any wondering what to do is pray. Prayer will never lead you astray, ask God if you should even ask, he'll set you straight, even if I or some other poster is steering you wrong.

Go with God, may his truth distill upon your souls as the dews of heaven.

I Said: Lurkers, Godzilla is a paid Theologian, he is paid to represent his church

U Said: DU - you really can't believe this. Maybe you can, but if you do - I think you may not be in touch with reality.

Are you saying I should not believe Godzilla when he said he was a paid theologian?

I would never impugn his reputation bay saying he didn't tell the truth when he said that.

U Said: But, your paranoid thoughts on Godzilla are actually a compliment. He/She is obviously very knowledgeable - and a terribly good debater.

Paranoid? If everyone really is out to get you , does that realization still make you paranoid? (LOL!)

I am not paranoid, and Godzilla is terrible lizard, (Godzilla being a dinosaur that was awakened after a long sleep, and Dinosaur meaning terrible lizard) as for him being a terrible debater, I'd agree with that too.

U Said: There are quite a lot of good debate skills here on FR.

Yes, there are, unfortunately, the appreciation of those "skills" seems to depend on whether or not you are on the side of the debater employing them.

U Said: Some are horrible at it - like sevenbak. All he does is spam threads with page after page of nothing, again and again.

I find sevenbak's posts very informative, and often he hits the ball out of the park so far that you guys just call lost ball and claim it was not a home run. (it's appreciation by side of argument again)

U Said: Godzilla is good - he is clear, and on target in every point.

He's big (even bigger than my posts), He's bad (He has called me names a few times), he's mean (he has never apologized or admitted that he was wrong even when proven so), He breaths fire, OK well not actual fire... (just having fun with the name...)

I believe Godzilla is antiquated, his views are steeped in tradition, and his methods do not take into account new findings, or modern methodology he is stuck on information being peer reviewed and not just whether or not it is true (the Bible was not peer reviewed... a peer review does not make something true, ask the flat earth society, they have peers who review their stuff). From my perspective, he denies the word of God in favor of the doctrines of men for money.

You can decry my words all you want, you can laud him all you want, I am after something no man can provide.

I Said: It's Anecdotal evidence, but it proves your blanket statement wrong.

U Said: Sorry DU; it 'proves' nothing.

IF you make an absolute, or blanket statement, and there is one exception, then the whole statement is proven wrong. I'm sorry, but that's logic for you.

U Said: Just like your ANOTHER testement of Jesus Christ 'proves' nothing new.

A huh, it proves you can be made to argue for an indeterminate amount of time about something you say does not exist. You remind me of people who whistle in the dark...

I applaud your testimony of Jesus and concur with it.

Let's start here ( one bite at a time )....J. Smith, and B. Young... ( and let me remind you they ) are your religions FOUNDATIONS.

If I may be so bold...they are mormonism's "Jesus" and let's say "Paul".....I said in the previous post that no man, nor angel, nor prophet enables me to God, only the Lord Jesus.

Mormonism's history equates J. Smith with Jesus, he himself said he was "better" than Jesus. Some of your leaders have in fact lead mormons to believe that very thing.

So...you really don't concur, or if you do aren't you going against the very founders of your religion?

U Said: The Nicene Creed is an ecumenical statement of faith. It is not new and different doctrine, and is not ‘Thus saith the LORD’ in any way made to add or delete doctrine of the Word of God -so your point is without merit or foundation.

If it was something taught in the Bible, then it would not need to have been forced on the church in AD 325, if it was self evident then there would not have been controversial in it's day. and if it is different, then it perfectly fits the bill of another Gospel:
Galatians 1 : 8 - 9
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Paul does not think highly of doctrines from men, but says that all such are accursed.

Read the Records of the Council as kept by Constantine's scribe (lengthy), or you can read My synopsis, the Trinity is a doctrine of men, it is a change to the Gospel of Paul, the Gospel of Jesus Christ himself, it was the reason God told Joseph Smith that all other religions were corrupt for the have all followed after this man-made mystery which is not of God. This is the great divide between Mormons and "Orthodox" Christianity. One of us is right, the other wrong, what worries me is how many won't even ask God about it.

U Said: Jesus is the Last Word from God: There is no prophet in that sense, after Jesus, for God has nothing more to say to anyone in this present creation.

Please show me exactly where int eh Bible it says that (you can't, it's not there). Please explain how come the Bible prophesies of Prophets int eh last days...

U Said: Any prophet who speaks in the Church of God who adds to or takes away from what is already written as the Witnesses of Christ wrote them for us, as to new revelations, is under the curse of having his name blotted out of the Book of Life.

If you are referring to Revelations 22 : 18 - 19, then you must not have read the earlier post where I point out that the Gospel of St John was written after Revelations, there is a similar scripture in Deut. 4 : 2 - 3, and since these were separate books, when the Catholic church comp=iled them they did so according to category, then length, gospels first shortest to longest, letters and histories, then Revelations which did not fit any of these categories they put last, your interpretation is flawed, Revelations itself speaks of prophets in the last days. and yes, I have read the Book of Enoch... very enlightening.

DelphiEser,
Tracing all words back to the roots of them as found in the one mother tongue which was given at the Garden of Eden and scrambled =mingled- at Babel shows that Nephi is frm the root used for the nephilim.

Here is a link to a book which will help teach you the science of language and how all roots for all words are found in the edenic[ first Hebrew]language.
http://www.amazon.com/Origin-Speeches-Intelligent-Design-Language/dp/0971938881

Here’s a [you tube type channel], presentation explaining it: http://www.brightcove.tv/channel.jsp?channel=429049167
It’s about a half hour long, and worth the view.

Here’s an e-word dictionary entry for the word which gives us the plural nephilim,w hich is translated as giants in the AV;
FALL NaFahL Noon-Phey-Lamed
(Naw)-FULL__________________[PH-L]
ROOTS: Anglo-Saxon feallan and the IE root phol (to fall) have not FALLEN far from the Hebrew (Na)PHahL (to FALL, to BEFALL). (Hee)PeeYL is to FELL or TOPPLE (make fall). Falling into a pit is the (Na)FahL of Exodus 21:33, while the FALL or DOWNFALL of a city recalls (M’a)PaLaH (ruin, downfall, defeat – Isaiah 7:1). More at “SPILL.” In Genesis 25:18, Ishmael is NaFahL in the face of all his brothers. The KJV renders this “died,” while the JPS tries “they made raids… (uncertain).” Both interpretations do not echo Peh-Lamed elsewhere. A FALL word like FAIL makes more sense.

BRANCHES: APOLLYON the angel is from a Greek verb of ruining and destroying. The mysterious Nephilim (fallen ones - Genesis 6:4) may have landed like nephele (clouds - Greek source of NEBULA).
Darkness and night FALL. APHaL is to set (as the sun); APHayLaH is darkness (which falls – see “PALL”). Official cognates of FALL include OFFAL, but not FAIL, FAUL(T), (reversing P-L) LAP(SE) or LABILE.
The French and Rumanian “rain” words seem to have the PL root of falling (pluie, ploaie).
OFFAL (garbage) is something that people toss or let fall. The IE root of OFFAL is (ap, off, away), but is might be a Pey-Lamed term of falling that belong here, along with other waste words like French gaspillage, German abfall and Dutch afval. German accident is unfall, recalling the DOWNFALL and FAILING above. Japanese “fall,” furu, is only a common liquid shift away. Like FAIL, furu can also men “reject.””

I Said: Have you heard of The Johannine Comma?

U Said: Have you heard about two angels of light visiting a 14 yo farmboy

Why yes, I have, Have you read the information on The Johannine Comma?

Here, let me make it easy for you...

From the Site:
The so-called Johannine Comma (also called the Comma Johanneum) is a sequence of extra words which appear in 1 John 5:7-8 in some early printed editions of the Greek New Testament. In these editions the verses appear thus (we put brackets around the extra words):

<Greek Text that I could not cut and paste>
The King James Version, which was based upon these editions, gives the following translation:
For there are three that bear record [in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth], the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
These extra words are generally absent from the Greek manuscripts. In fact, they only appear in the text of four late medieval manuscripts. They seem to have originated as a marginal note added to certain Latin manuscripts during the middle ages, which was eventually incorporated into the text of most of the later Vulgate manuscripts. In the Clementine edition of the Vulgate the verses were printed thus:
Quoniam tres sunt, qui testimonium dant [in caelo: Pater, Verbum, et Spiritus Sanctus: et hi tres unum sunt. 8 Et tres sunt, qui testimonium dant in terra:] spiritus, et aqua, et sanguis: et hi tres unum sunt.
From the Vulgate, then, it seems that the Comma was translated into Greek and inserted into some printed editions of the Greek text, and in a handful of late Greek manuscripts. All scholars consider it to be spurious, and it is not included in modern critical editions of the Greek text, or in the English versions based upon them. For example, the English Standard Version reads:
For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.
You see, translation error n the inerrant bible, known only to scholars lest the people get nervous about their perfect bible and actually start asking God questions

The truth is a pesky thing... if you aren't in touch with it.

Is it your contention that the “light that dwells with Him” was the light that was created on the first day? Is God not eternal, as well as the light that is with Him? If so, how was it thus created? Was the account of the creation about the earth & us, or does it have to do with other things that have nothing to do with us as well?

BTW, these questions are meant in sincerity & part of a reasoned discussion rather than a put down or a call out. I’m sincerely interested in your take.
