Finding Truth in the “Would Not Vote for a Mormon” Polls
RomneyExperience.com ^ | 7/26/07

Posted on 07/26/2007 5:03:33 PM PDT by tantiboh

Democratic political consultant Mark Mellman has a very good piece up today at The Hill on the baffling and illegitimate opposition among voters to Mitt Romney due to his religion. I liked his closing paragraphs:

In July of 1958, 24 percent of respondents told Gallup they would not vote for a Catholic for president, almost identical to Gallup’s reading on Mormons today. Two years later, John F. Kennedy became the first Catholic to assume the oath of office. Within eight months, the number refusing to vote for a Catholic was cut almost in half.

[snip]

Mellman also discusses an interesting poll he helped construct, in which the pollsters asked half of their respondents whether they would support a candidate with certain characteristics, and asked the other half about another candidate with the exact same characteristics, with one difference. The first candidate was Baptist, the second candidate was Mormon. The Baptist had a huge advantage over the Mormon candidate, by about 20 points.

[snip]

However, more recent polls have attempted to fix the anonymity problem. A recent Time Magazine poll (read the original report here), for example, got to the heart of the question by asking respondents if they are less likely to vote for Mitt Romney specifically because he is a Mormon. The result is not as bad as some reporting on the poll has suggested. For example, while 30% of Republicans say they are less likely to vote for Romney because of his religion, fully 15% of other Republicans say that characteristic makes them more likely to vote for him. And while many have reported the finding that 23% of Republicans are “worried” by Romney’s Mormonism, the more important (but less-reported) number is that 73% say they hold no such reservations...

You stated: “Kinda like your organization treated BLACKS until, viola![sic], a revelation occured [sic].”

Not really, it is kinda like God’s treatment of Gentiles until, “voila!,” a revelation occurred.

Why do you give a flying leap about declaring for everyone on Free Republic that you intend to not vote for a Mormon for POTUS?

PS How enlightened that you will consider other offices as they arise. What our country needs is more voters with your bigoted mindset. NOT.

Thank you for reaffirming my point. Cheerfully giving just doesn’t cut it, does, it?

The thing I am opposed to, is a cult who claims to be the ONLY true church of God.

Sadly; there are those even among Protestants!!

The thing I am opposed to, is a cult who claims to be the ONLY true church of God.

It reminds me of this:

NIV 1 Kings 18:22
Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the LORD's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.

NIV 1 Kings 19:10, 14-18
 10.  He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
.
.
.
 14.  He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
 15.  The LORD said to him,     "Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.
 16.  Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.
 17.  Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.
 18.  Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel--all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him."

No individual Mormon living today is should have to apologize for MMM.

But the constant smudging of facts and declaring BY not guilty for any of it is wrong.

No innocent man would cover up the murder of 100+ innocent people for over a dozen years. His actions after the fact convict him of his acts before the murders.

The records speaks for itself. If you are going to dredge up this issue again, I am going to quote your words for all to see what you said and let them judge for themselves.

P.S. Isn’t it proper etiquette to ping a freeper when you refer to him or her?

Carter, with all his faults, did not lead people to a false religion. He was bad for our country, but we survived it.

We don't know that yet. Carter's undermining of the Shah of Iran gave us the resurgence of islammunism in the world that is this country's number one struggle. Shoehorning the Ayatollah into power in Iran was Carter's biggest mistake, in a Presidency chock full of them. It was the only one that Ronald Reagan was unable to fix.

You know as well as I do that is not true.
Before you are baptized and confirmed you don’t necessarily have him with you always, but that doesn’t mean he can’t drop in on you once in a while.

You know as well as I do that is not biblcal.

NIV John 14:16-19
 16.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--
 17.  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be  in you.
 18.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

KJV John 14:16-18
 16.  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
 17.  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
 18.  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

You'll note that there were NO 'condititions' given that would required for this!

John 14

 1.  "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me.
 2.  In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.
 3.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
 4.  You know the way to the place where I am going."
 5.  Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
 6.  Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
 7.  If you really knew me, you would know  my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
 8.  Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."
 9.  Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'?
 10.  Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
 11.  Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
 12.  I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
 13.  And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.
 14.  You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
 15.  "If you love me, you will obey what I command.

“What our country needs is more voters with your bigoted mindset. NOT.”

big·ot (bgt)
n.
One who is strongly partial to one’s own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

According to this, pro-lifers are bigots! So are mormons.
So is everyone who believes in truth.

I am also a pro-life bigot for POTUS.
I am also a REPUBLICAN bigot for POTUS.

I am not a Dairy Queen member or bus rider.

You’d think the God of the Universe would not have neglected to mention such an important man who would be so vital to humans entering into God’s presence in the hereafter!

DETAILS!!

Don't you KNOW that JS' name had been REMOVED from the book that you poor gentiles have received from the Catholic church??

You should feel BLESSED that so MANY blessed truths of GOD have been restored by our Living Prophet®(s)!

How ELSE would we know to do the Temple rites that we do, if they had NOT been written in our HOLY books???

I didn't talk about you, or imply anything about you. I was talking about the "issue." Here are my exact words:

Be vary wary of this one. I have been accused of a “hate” crime.

I DO know something about Dairy Queens however. The Bishop in my town was the owner of the one and only, fast food, drive-in type of eating establishment in a very active tourist community (which is a long way of sayin he was busy and his business was lucrative.)

Going down mainstreet to the Dairy Queen to watch the icecream drip was an approved activity. He also only hired the best-looking girls in town to work for him. HMMMMMmmmmm

Now you seem to be threatening me, based on a paranoid idea that I am somehow referrencing YOU. I think you owe me an apology.

All have some of the truth.

NIV John 10:1
"I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

NIV John 10:7
Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.

NIV John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.

This is the ONLY 'truth' that counts!

Really? A threat? I didn’t realize you feel so “threatened” by your own words?

After AMPU pings you to our dialogue, you respond:

“Be vary wary of this one. I have been accused of a “hate” crime.”

You and I both know what this references, don’t we?
