Good Riddance: The Episcopal split promises a stronger church [TECleft]
Slate ^ | 12/22/206 | The Rev. Astrid Storm

As a theological liberal, I take a rather dim view of the doctrine of providence. Still, I have to say that there was something vaguely providential about the way events unfolded in the Episcopal Church this past week.

Last Sunday, eight Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Virginia voted to break away from the U.S. Episcopal Church.... In fact, it seems to me that this couldn't have happened at a better time, with better people, or in a better way. The Episcopal Church may even be stronger for it in the long run.

...

Astrid Storm, an Episcopal priest, is the vicar of St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson. She lives in New York City.

She's been vicar for exactly THREE MONTHS, and was only ordained 5 years ago.

Reading the Use Words... sermon about how happy many people are to see her and her fellow priests, in their vestments - so clearly identified as priests, at the peace rally, I am struck that this is the body of her sermon. It's not a note of what the vicar is doing, but the sermon.

Even presupposing that what she wants to convey is that God is pleased with the people at the peace rally, and that the people at the peace rally want to be clearly identified with religious people, I do not see how this brings the congregation closer to Christ.

"They are Democrats or Socialists, pro-abortion, pro homosexual agenda, and anti-tradition. They are iconoclasts."

They are more simply non-believers or apostates.

But if they were simply nonbelievers, they wouldn't bother to come to church.

I'm afraid they have something more than just being apostates in mind -- like taking down the church.

I know you are trying to insult me, but I happen to know people who are far more informed in theological matters than I am, and they agree with me on the subject of women in the priesthood.

I gather your thinking that the "proper" interpretation of the Bible also means that women can't be college professors because women shouldn't be allowed to teach men?

"""I know you are trying to insult me, but I happen to know people who are far more informed in theological matters than I am, and they agree with me on the subject of women in the priesthood."""

I'm glad you know people who've thought about it.

"""I gather your thinking that the "proper" interpretation of the Bible also means that women can't be college professors because women shouldn't be allowed to teach men?"""

You would be wrong, but that is the common slanderous cliché.

I'm not going to continue this unless you want to as it is in no way a "salvation issue".

THIS IS REALLY A MESSAGE TO THE US EPISCOPAL CHURCH - NEW AGE GNOSTICISM!

As of this day, the majority of Christendom does not ordain women. I have been for the ordination of women in the past, but am now wondering whether this practice should continue. I have been in ministry for many years and am looking at Catholicism. People don’t like rules and they don’t like a lot of tradition, but in light of where liberal Protestants are taking Protestant Christians, maybe it is better to be Catholic and have a firm foundation of teaching you can count on throughout the ages.
THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE US IS BASED ON FALSE TEACHING! INCLUSIVE - RIGHT, ONLY IF YOU AGREE WITH GLBT AND THEIR ACTIVISTS. COUNT ME OUT OF THIS KIND OF INSANITY. I would rather belong to a denomination that uses traditional words without all of the twisting and distortion. The Episcopal Church in the US is lost, a ship being tossed to and fro by every wind and wave of hip, corrupt culture.

When will GLBT sons and daughters love their parents enough to accept their parents when their conservative parents choose not to believe in the GLBT lifestyle? Ever wonder about that question?

What do they think is wrong with the word “priestess”?

The role of college teacher does not preclude women. but the role of “Hamlet” does. A great actress may successfully attenpt the role, but she knows she is pretending to be a man, and we know it.

They think the priesthood is gender neutral. Unconsciously they get this because they approach the matter from the protestant tradition. Protestants have no sacerdotal priesthood, no class of Christians set aside by priestly chism.Role in theie chgurches are based on a division of labor. A minister is basically a teacher of Scripture, and either a man or woman may be a teacher. A pastor is a counselor and/or administrator. and a counselor may be a man or a woman.

I get where you are coming from, and no doubt you are correct. But the word priestess exists, and I reckon I was wondering why a lib/fem group would object to their own special word to use. I mean, pagan clergy uses both “priest” and “priestess” proudly, right?

Maybe not. In the entertainment industry, the words “actor” and actress” are used interchangeably. Titles in the academy award like “best actress” are regarded an anacronism. You know what happened to the “stewardesses”. Now we have flight attendent. The conceit of modern feminism is the old Annie Okley thing: “Anything you can do I can do better.” Good luck trying out for quarterback on a high school football team?

The appointment of the somewhat Christian bishopess is probably NOT rhe proximate cause of the secession. These things are normally not done on a whim or in response to any one act. Surely it has been discussed and debated for a year or two. The recent appointment most likely merely confirmed a decision already taken and may have been cause for no more than a raised eyebrow by the time it happened.
