"One cardinal rule of marriage should never be forgotten: GIVE LITTLE, GIVE SELDOM, AND ABOVE ALL, GIVE GRUDGINGLY. Otherwise what could have been a proper marriage could become an orgy of sexual lust."

The above article is not fiction. Keep in mind that this was once given by a pastor's wife as mature, sober and serious advice to young brides, which is why I've labeled the thread HUMOR and not SATIRE.

That said, you have to admit this is pretty funny.

" Close your eyes and think of England"

Queen Victoria to one of her daughers.

The above article is not fiction.

And your proof of that is...what? This looks more like it was written by an acne-scratching, basement-dwelling trekkie who can't understand why Britney Spears isn't returning his phone calls.

Actually, my mother in law gave me this article, or something akin to it, when I got married..... 36 years ago.

NO it wasn't a joke.

No, I didn't take it seriously.

Oh, I think it is fiction. Some of the language is not typical of the 1890s, and the attitude is too openly anti-sexual. This is a parody piece.

"Lie back and think of England" was cliche' advice from Victorian mothers, but it didn't come from Victoria herself. She was quite frank in her diaries about how in love she was (in every sense) with her husband, and her youngest daughter Beatrice expurgated those diaries after the Queen's death for that very reason.

Sir James Clarke, her personal physician, recorded in his own diary that when he advised the Queen not to have further pregnancies, after her youngest child was born in 1857, she was quite blunt with him about not being willing to give up the physical pleasures of marriage.

Oh, woe is me! I am undone!

It's likely that this is a fake article after all (in which case, it would be satire, but that's another story).

My apologies to all....

And what's even funnier, apparently my wife read this and completed the terms and conditions listed in it by our 10 anniversary.

I can't believe it is true. It has to be fiction. How do you know it's not made up?

You know what's funnier. Giving this letter to your then non-Catholic future husband, a week before your wedding and mentioning, "Someone gave this to me at church, wasn't that sweet."

Now that was fun...and slightly cruel.

No doubt some sad soul will actually welcome such advice. It's quite rare, but some women just don't care for sex. There exist quite a few of the OTHER kind, so this is not impossible.
Even worse would be those who LIKE the idea of blunting the arrow...

At this point, dear reader, let me concede one shocking truth. Some young women actually anticipate the wedding night ordeal with curiosity and pleasure! Beware such an attitude! A selfish and sensual husband can easily take advantage of such a bride.

Darn straight :)
