Hey my brother Tony,

We often forget that Luther wrote more on the subject of election than Calvin. What are your (and any other Lutherans on your ping list) thoughts on this?

You know, I wasn't really in the Calvinist camp until I finished Luther's "Bondage of the Will".

Does that make me a Lutheranist?

Well, let's trace it back: Luther was an Augustinian, Augustine was Pauline, Paul was a Christian...

the Arminian party at the Synod of Dort

If they'd met in Dork instead of Dort, their theology would never have had any traction.

For the Arminian, the ability to fall away from grace is merely the flip side of the individual's ability to decide for Christ. If we can decide to accept him, it stands to reason that we must also have the power to reject him.

Arminius believed folks REJECT/RESIST Christ.

Best simply to read the long section on Election in the Book of Concord www.bookofconcord.org/fc-sd/election.htm.

Despite having written and STM paper on the subject eighteen years ago there is little more that I can add.

Why should this surprise anyone. Luther was an Augustinian monk and Augustine was Calvin's authoritative source.

Actually, Luther completely rebuked Rome and severed all ties with her. To call him an "Augustinian monk" in the preset tense is misleading. Luther called Rome the "synagogue of Satan". Luther's non-catholic critics are never satisfied though.

For a person caught up in a misunderstanding of things, your words have the ability to beat back a considerable portion of that. That was very well stated!
